What is sustainability?
Dictionary.com:
Sustainability: the quality of not being harmful to the
environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting long-
term ecological balance
My definition:
Sustainability combines economic, cultural, and environmental factors to create the
most beneficial outcome that also preserves the integrity of the resources used. It’s all
about trying to find a balance.

Sustainability in a residence hall
 Lead by example: What you do others will see, what you say others will hear.
 Recycling: Making it the norm.
 Programming: Be ecologically responsible in activities provided to residents.
 Creativity: Is there a better way or more that can be done?
 Resources: Do they have what they need?
 Teaching: Educate yourself then share and incorporate.
Sustainability in the Work Place
Brighter planet nationwide employee engagement survey; the 3 keys to success:
1. Top down: Hall directors and RLA should be doing their part.
2. Realistic goals: Create a goal for your hall, staff, or yourself to achieve
and hold each other/ yourself accountable.
3. Communication: How does UNT mean green? How do you and your hall
mean green?

Incorporating vs. Educating
 Incorporation is action in your own life as well as in
programming.
 Education is teaching others environmentally relevant
