A Research Proposal on Literary Text/Film about the American
Dream
Abstract
The arguments regarding the American dreams have been
conveyed and shared in various ways including authorship and
theater. Fundamentally this research proposal seeks to provide a
comprehensive analysis of the text The Great Gatsby by F. Scott
Fitzgerald as well as the film produced about the novel. The aim
of this evaluation is to identify and discuss their difference s in
regard to their contribution to the topic of the American dream.
Introduction
The text The Great Gatsby narrows down the arguments to an
intense criticism of the American dream which is the belief that
anyone has the chance to succeed in America regardless of their
identity. Jay Gatsby is an excellent example of the person who
manages to overcome poverty and amass wealth in America.
However, the limited social cache barred him from attaining the
American dream.
Statement of the Problem
Americans woke up every day to what has lived to be described
that American dream which ultimately promises them a different
version of life. However, a good percentage of them only see
this as fallacious and unattainable since most of them still lead
poor lifestyles. Although the idea is still receiving substantial
support from those who believe in it, many Americans have
criticized it severally. With texts and films produced to explain
and provide the true picture and its implication, there is need to
evaluate these sources to ascertain how they promote the idea of
2. the American dream.
Literature Review
The idea of the American dream has been clearly demonstrated
in the text The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald. According to,
(Fitzgerald) Nick reasoned that as wealth and dishonesty
influenced Gatsby's dream of Daisy, it is clear that the
American dream is purely chasing wealth. In the movie, there is
a difference in the depiction of the American dream. In the
novel, for instance, Gatsby tries to appeal to the families wi th
old money by throwing parties and doing all kinds of flashy
things (Luhrmann).
Conclusion
In conclusion, both the Fitzgerald and Luhrmann, in their work,
clearly portray the American dream despite the fact that the two
works were created at very different times in the American
history.
