Profiting From Apache Brands Without Losing Your SoulShane Curcuru
Does your company want to capitalize on the Apache brand? Are you interested in seeing how closely you can tie your marketing into the latest Apache projects? Do you recognize the importance of supporting the Apache ecosystem, not just with code contributions but other actions?
As VP of Brand Management for all Apache projects, Shane can help show business and technical leaders some of the ways they can respectfully and successfully market and position their own services and products in relation to Apache project brands. The key message is: Apache project governance is independent; but we are happy to have businesses build their software and services on any Apache software products. You may incorporate Apache brands within your brands, but in specific ways that still give our communities credit. We're here to help!

Practical Trademark Law for FOSS ProjectsShane Curcuru
Looking for ways to capitalize on the emerging FOSS brands that are driving innovation? Want to “make a new open source community” for your product, but not sure how to control the trademarks? Wondering if you should let the marketing team run with the great new brand campaign, or if you need to ask the lawyers about trademarks first?
Improving Your Apache Project's Image And BrandShane Curcuru
Want to find new ways to draw in contributors to your project? Looking to attract ideas and attention from some of the corporate vendors, but don't want to lose your independence? Don't know how to approach your employer's plans to launch BigCo's SuperLucene product?
Learn how to improve your project's brand, drawing in newcomers as productive contributors, and defending your brand from aggressive vendors. Dealing fairly and firmly with companies mis-using your good reputation seems hard, but it doesn't need to be.
Learn about what uses of Apache brands that are OK, versus infringing uses hungry vendors try to use - and how to stop them. The strong independent reputation of your project and Apache overall relies on every PMC policing their own brand effectively and fairly. The Trademarks Committee is here to help!
This session will provide an introduction to The Apache Software Foundation – it’s history, organization and principles, and how Apache projects work. You will learn about The Apache Way of managing meritocracy-based and community driven projects as is practiced by all of the 100+ Apache projects, the levels of participation in Apache projects, and how you can get involved. This talk will also touch on the how the Apache governance process and the permissive Apache 2.0 license help ensure longer-lived open source projects, and provide a different opportunity for engagement than some other source communities and license models.
Shane Curcuru was elected as a Member of the ASF in 2002, and has been volunteering on public relations, conferences, brand management, and various other areas at Apache ever since. He also serves as a Director.
In the modern open source world, where licenses and DVCS’ allow instant and infinite forking, the only true control point for a community-based open source project is its name, its logo, and its identity. Your brand is your identity: this is how the rest of the world sees you and your project.
How can a volunteer-led open source project control it’s own identity and brand? How do you manage your project’s brand when most of your volunteers are coders who don’t want to get involved with lawyers or deal with enforcing trademarks? How can the community keep their brand independent and free of commercial influence, so they can ensure the maximum number of people and corporations are interested in participating in their project?
Similarly, how can businesses respectfully use open source brands to their own advantage – without being seen as co-opting and independent or open community open source project solely for their own gain? The desire to control the next hot project for your profit may quickly turn on you when another company simply forks the code under a better marketed service.
Learn the basics of all these topics and more with Shane Curcuru, who volunteers as Vice President, Brand Management for The Apache Software Foundation. Over the past few years Shane has led a group of volunteer ASF Members to define and implement a consistent brand policy for all 100 Apache projects – spanning from the veritable HTTPD and Tomcat to the newest CouchDB and Hadoop.

Why your project's brand is more important than the code - SCRIPTShane Curcuru
The document discusses the importance of branding and storytelling for open source projects. It argues that while code is important internally, branding and telling the story of a project's value to external audiences is key to growing communities and users. Effective branding involves both technical "Geeks" focused on code and non-technical "Suits" focused on communicating the project's benefits. The governance of a project's brand is also important to consider to ensure the community remains in control of the story being told.
The Apache Way - Dataworks Summit 2017Brett Porter

The Journey of Apache ManifoldCF: Learning from ASF's SuccessesPiergiorgio Lucidi
Every ASF project has a story to tell and behind a story we find people contributing with a real love in technologies.
They share the Open Source philosophy and this honest commitment in terms of personal effort for achieving any kind of improvement for the project means that there are individual contributors following a common light: The Apache Way.
Piergiorgio will describe the path taken by the Apache ManifoldCF Community for getting these results, starting from the incubation process to the promotion as Top Level Project and then engaging new contributors.
Finally Piergiorgio explains how the Community can help with a huge benefit also in the strategic view for a project.
Each contributor shares his own specific expertise on the field and his technological sensibility will bring added value until to drastically improve the scope of the entire project. Listen to the Community!

Individuals contribute to projects based on technical merit rather than their employer. The foundation provides a neutral space for open collaboration on software projects using well-defined principles.
What is SaaS vs Open Source | Open Source CMS (Content Management System) vs ...ClickTecs
If you are reading this, you have probably come to a crossroad while building a website or an online application. Is it better to use a SaaS platform or is it better to use an Open Source Platform? That is the question? The answer to this dilemma will hopefully be determined below.
In this post, we define ‘Platforms’, ‘CMS’, ‘SaaS’ and ‘Open Source’, and we will break down the pros and cons of Software as a Service when compared to the pros and cons of an Open Source Content Management Systems.
I won’t use the GPL for new software, and you maybe shouldn’t either. “Heretic”, comes the cry from the back of the room! But no – I bleed and believe in open source and the public good as much as you do. The difference is, I want to share my code with *everyone* not just the believers.
This document discusses private browsing mode and the potential for forensic analysis of private browsing activity. It begins with background on digital forensics and browser architecture. Private browsing is designed to leave no traces after a session, but browser implementations vary. The document then analyzes Internet Explorer 10's "InPrivate" browsing mode, finding that activity records are stored in databases but marked as private and deleted after sessions. However, some records may remain recoverable from log files. The conclusion is that private browsing does leave opportunities for forensic analysis to discover browsing activity.
The document discusses digital forensics techniques for investigating incidents on Windows systems. It covers examining memory dumps, processes, services, drivers, ports, file systems, and other artifacts to determine what occurred. Specific techniques include comparing memory data to self-reported information and disk sources, identifying unknown files, examining auto-start points and jump lists, analyzing prefetch and event logs, and reviewing internet history and cache files. The goal is to discern how and when a system may have been compromised through analyzing changing system states and artifacts left by activities on the system.

Summary of Incite Summit: West 2014 Told Through Quotes and TweetsProscape
As part of Proscape's collaboration with Incite Marketing and Communication on the mobile app for their Incite Summit: West event, we had the pleasure to moderate a live twitter feed that displays real-time on a page in the app (and displayed prominently at the event site.
By handpicking some of the most revealing tweets (and adding some direct quotes), we are able to provide a summary of many highlights from this event. The quality of panel members at the event was outstanding and most of these quotes are pure gold for marketers looking to gain an edge for their business.
Incite Summit is an event where CMOs and senior brand leaders gather to talk about their central challenges so they can succeed in an ever-evolving, fast-paced industry that is dominated by technology and controlled by the customer. Each talk avoids Power Point slides and just focus on meaningful discussion, so you never know just where the dialogue will go. This creates some very "tweatable" moments.

Migrating Netflix from Datacenter Oracle to Global CassandraAdrian Cockcroft
Netflix is migrating its datacenter infrastructure from Oracle databases to a globally distributed Apache Cassandra database on AWS. This will allow Netflix to scale more easily and deploy new features faster without being limited by the capacity of its own datacenters. The migration involves transitionally replicating data between Oracle and AWS services like SimpleDB while new services are deployed directly on Cassandra. This will cut Netflix's dependence on its existing datacenters and allow it to fully leverage the elasticity of the public cloud.

1. The document discusses the transformation and transition of smallholder farmers as economies develop and GDP per capita increases.
2. It recognizes that most smallholder farmers today will not be full-time farmers in 20-50 years due to the relative decline of agriculture, but that the transition may be slow in sub-Saharan Africa from 2010-2020.
3. Smallholder farmers are categorized into different groups depending on their situation and policies need to be tailored to support different groups as their roles change, such as helping marginal farmers remain part-time or semi-subsistence farmers.
At the heart of much of the Bigdata revolution is the Apache Software Foundation. Many of the projects, including the big ones like Hadoop, Spark, Hive, and Kafka, are Apache projects. This means they follow "The Apache Way". Maybe you have heard phrases like "community over code" or "if it didn't happen on the lists, it didn't happen" and wondered what they meant. Maybe you would like to get involved with one or more of these projects but have not been sure how. Maybe you would just like to learn how Apache works, and how its process differs from the way companies build software. If so, this talk is for you. This talk will introduce Apache, how it is organized, the roles people play, who can contribute (hint, it is not just coders), Apache's tenants of community, meritocracy, collaboration, and openness, give some practical tips for new contributors and even old hands, as well as touch briefly on licenses and trademarks.
Foundations of a Successful Developer Platform - DeveloperWeek 2015Kamyar Mohager
This document discusses key considerations for building a successful developer platform. It covers platform strategy, API architecture and development, documentation and support, and monitoring and operability. For platform strategy, it recommends defining the platform's value and determining who it targets. For APIs, it suggests consuming internal APIs externally and treating APIs as products. For documentation, it advises decreasing time to first API call through clear documentation. And for monitoring, it stresses the importance of monitoring platform health internally and externally.
Keynote: Community, Code and Companies - Mark Hinkle, Director of Open Source...Mark Hinkle

We also looked at how both channels treat creative, audiences, bidding/budgeting, and AI. We finished by going through how they can win together including UTM audits, harvesting comments from both to inform creative, and allowing for non-login forums to be part of your marketing strategy.

7. Apache goals
• Apache is a non-proft, public charity
• Our Mission: provide software for the public good
• Our Method: provide stable, independent home for like-minded
diverse project development communities
• Our Goal: Ensure Foundation exists for next 50 years
8. What Is The Apache® Brand? What Is The Apache® Brand?
9. The Apache® brand
• Apache software projects share these elements:
• Pragmatic and permissive Apache license
• Always free to download
• Participation in projects based on merit
• Openly developed software
• Independent project governance
• APACHE is our house brand for community built software
• APACHE is a registered trademark of the ASF
http://community.apache.org/projectIndependence
10. Apache project brands
• All projects share a common Apache Way of working
• Every PMC defnes their project's brand independently, so actual
Apache project brands may differ in style
• “Apache” must precede all project names (eg, Apache Lucene®,
Apache Spark™, Apache Sqoop™, etc.)
• All Apache project/product names are trademarks, owned by the ASF
on behalf of the individual projects
11. Apache trademark policy
• Applies to all Apache project brands, with fexibility for individual

12. Apache brand usage goals
• ASF project brands are for use by the Apache community only:
• Individual contributors do not own the brand
• Companies that contribute money or their employees' time do not
own the brand
• Restricting brand usage to only the ASF:
• Supports project independence (from corporate infuence) and
• Encourages diverse volunteer contributor participation

13. So, what can companies do?
So, Shane, if my company supports
Apache with donations or employee

14. How To Use Apache BrandsHow To Use Apache Brands
15. Using Apache brands in software products
• If you have your own software that works in conjunction with Apache
software, you must have a separate brand name for your software
• You may then add the full “Apache Foo” name as appropriate to
clarify the relationship of your software to ours, no explicit
permission needed if using these forms
• Ono-Sendai Console, Powered By Apache Steve
• Yoyodyne Accelerator For Apache CloudStack
• May not use offcial Apache project graphics/logos as part of your
brand; a “Powered By Apache” banded logo may be used to
supplement your brand logo
http://www.apache.org/foundation/marks/faq/#products
16. Using Apache brands in services
• If you provide services in conjunction with ASF-generated software,
you must have a separate brand name for your services
• You may then add the “Apache Foo” name as applicable to refer to
the actual Apache Foo software itself
• Your branding must not imply that you provide exclusive or Apache-
endorsed support, training, consulting, hosting, customizations,
etc.
• Unlike use in software branding, you may use Apache project
graphics/logos in conjunction with your branding in certain
circumstances, but not as your own primary logo for your services.
17. Use of Apache brands in events & swag
• If you sponsor or run events related to Apache projects, you may use
the project brand in certain specifc ways, with permission
• The primary brand for your event may include the project name,
without the “Apache” prefx, eg. Hadoop Summit
• Must have an “About Apache Hadoop” link on event website
• Must include educational content about Apache Hadoop
• Allow PMC members on selection committee
• Individual PMCs may give permissions for use of their own project
brand for events/giveaway swag (eg. T-shirts, pens, stickers, etc.)
• Detailed policy How-To & Steps below
http://www.apache.org/foundation/marks/events
18. Guidelines for marketing with Apache brands
• Apache is vendor-neutral
• Don't imply ownership or control of an Apache product
• No superlatives related to an Apache project
• No corporate affliation or endorsement implied
• Frown on “employ the most PMC members”
• Give credit to the project community
• Ensure users understand every Apache project is independently
governed
19. If you donate projects to Incubator...
• Thank You!
• We very much appreciate all those who choose to donate their
projects to the Apache Incubator
• Branding, trademarks, and code are all required parts of donation
• Apache Incubation process is about teaching the new “Podling” what
the Apache Way is, and building an independent community
• Podlings and Apache Projects are part of the ASF
•
• Donor companies have no claim to affliation, endorsement, or
control after a Podling is accepted into the Incubator
20. How to Support Apache BrandsHow to Support Apache Brands
21. Other ways to show support
• Use Apache software products - and let people know
• Donate code / projects to Apache
• Donate employee time for coders & non-coders on projects:
documentation, testing, other skills
• Participate actively in events
• Sponsor and organize events, eg. Lucene Revolution, Hadoop World
• Donate funds through Apache Sponsorship Program
22. If you are donating employee time...
• Their participation in the ASF project is governed by the PMC and the
Apache Way, independent of your corporate reporting structure
• Merit is gained by individuals, independent of affliation
• Your employees must understand appropriate behavior (project-
specifc procedures and practices) within Apache project(s)
• Project work must be discussed on Apache project public mailing
lists, not internal company emails
• Proprietary company work must be done outside the Apache project
23. Allow employees' skill growth
• Ensure your management allows employees suffcient time to
participate in projects appropriately
• Understand which “hat” employees are wearing
• Think about what pressures you put on emploeyes, and understand
you need to allow them to behave with Apache hats (or, are going
to fail at Apache merit)
• Collaborative decision making, collaboration seeking, and working
across disparate/distributed teams – these are all key skills your
employees will gain and can bring back
• Open source is eating the world – and employees want those skills
