Mutiny on the JVM: Taming Complexity in the Heart of Reactive Java

Reactive Programming has fascinated (and confounded) developers since Microsoft’s Cloud Programmability Team released the first version of Reactive Extensions for .NET. RxJava enables Netflix to deliver at massive scale, is a fixture in Android development, and is frequently used in combination with RxJS for web development. Reactive toolkits like Eclipse Vert.x and Lightbend’s Akka have powered distributed, high volume applications from the edge to the cloud. Spring’s Reactor project renamed many of the RxJava constructs, but did little to help ease of use or flatten the substantial learning curve. Java 8 embraced reactive programming with the introduction of Streams, Lambdas, CompletionStage, and CompletableFuture. Unfortunately Java 8 also delivered a substantial learning curve. Mutiny to the rescue! SmallRye Mutiny is a reactive library that distills Reactive Programming into 2 simple concepts: Multi and Uni.

Kubernetes (and OpenShift) for developers

The first PaaS debuted in 2005. Designed to make developers’ lives easier and operations obsolete, PaaS barely registered in the enterprise landscape. Kubernetes v1 debut in 2015 and changed the game. Kubernetes dominates mindshare (and market share), has been adopted by all major IT vendors, and faces no real competition for container orchestration. Kubernetes is now one of the hottest and most in-demand skills in our profession. While Kubernetes makes running containers easier it can make development more complex. In this talk we will look at how deploying to Kubernetes effects your day to day work as a developer from test/compile/commit to design patterns and tooling.

Supersonic, Subatomic, Kubernetes Native Java : Microservices Day Dallas

Java has been a staple of enterprise development for over 20 years. Java has outlasted the desktop, dominated the server side, and with the emergence of Android has captured a huge share of mobile development. But Java was built for long running applications living in traditional datacenters. Microservices, Containers and Kubernetes have changed the game. Cloud native development and functions have quickly become the norm. Java had not kept up… until March of last year. The Quarkus project delivers vastly smaller, unbelievably faster, and fundamentally more scalable Java applications. In this session, we’ll see how and why Quarkus (and GraalVM) optimizes enterprise Java for a Kubernetes world.

Serverless or Serverfull Microservices Day Phoenix

Serverless is a misnomer; your future cloud native applications will consist of both microservces and functions, often wrapped as Linux containers, but in many cases where you the developer ignore the operational aspects of managing that infrastructure. In this session, we will dive into the capabilities of a Function-as-a-Service Platform for Kubernetes/OpenShift. The Microservices evolution was relatively easy, the programming model was nearly identical to the previous generation of Java EE. Today, Functions represent a new programming model for your next generation Java business applications. This will be a demo intensive session.

Today there are more monthly, active users of Facebook (>2B) than there were active users of the internet in 2000. Humans create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data every day. Massively scalable systems and massive amounts of data are now part of every developer’s life-even if you don’t work at a Silicon Valley unicorn. Reactive approaches are critical pieces in scaling modern systems--especially microservices architectures. This talk addresses why these approaches are critical pieces in scaling microservices architectures; especially greenfield microservices applications. This talk dives into Reactive Programming with ReactiveX and building reactive systems with Eclipse Vert.x, Akka and Spring Reactor.
