The Metropolitan Police in London recruited "super-recognisers" - individuals with exceptional face recognition abilities - to help with identification tasks. The researchers tested 4 of these police super-recognisers on 3 face recognition tests:
1) A standard unfamiliar face matching test where they significantly outperformed a group of police trainees, with one scoring perfectly.
2) A more difficult unfamiliar face matching test, where they again significantly outperformed students.
3) A new test matching pixelated photos of celebrities and lookalikes, designed to simulate poor quality surveillance photos. They consistently recognized the faces much better than students on this familiar face recognition test.
The results show that the police super-recognisers have face recognition
