This document provides information and examples about using superlative adjectives in English. It outlines three main rules for forming superlatives: (1) adding "-est" to one-syllable adjectives, (2) replacing the "y" with "i" and adding "-est" for two-syllable adjectives ending in "y", and (3) adding "the most" for adjectives with two or more syllables not ending in "y". It also notes some irregular superlative forms and exceptions. The document includes exercises for students to practice using superlative adjectives to describe different people, places, things and situations.

Superlative Adjectives
A superlative adjective expresses the extreme or highest degree of a quality. We use a superlative
adjective to describe the extreme quality of one thing in a group of things.
We can use superlative adjectives when talking about three or morethings (not two things).
Rule 1: When an adjective consists of one syllable add “est” to the end to make it a superlative adjective.
Examples:
Superlative
clean the cleanest
dark the darkest
thick
Soft
warm
neat
broad
Tall
old
Exception to Rule 1: If the one syllable adjective ends with a consonant-vowel-consonant we need to
double the last consonant before adding the “est”. However, if the last consonant is a w then we
follow rule 1 instead.
Examples:
Superlative
big the biggest
dim
fat
fit
flat
few the fewest
slow
low

Rule 2: When a two syllable adjective ends with y we need to replace the y with an i and then add
the est.
Examples:
Superlative
busy the busiest
dirty
easy
funny
noisy
happy
heavy
lovely
Rule 3: For an adjective with two or more syllabus (that does not end with y), we use add the word
the most in front of the adjective.
Examples:
Superlative
active the most active
careless
famous
cheerful
beautiful
generous
intelligent
valuable
Exceptions 1: There are some adjectives that have irregular superlative forms.
Examples:
Superlative
good the best
Bad the worst
Far The farther
Exceptions 2: With some 2-syllable adjectives, we can use "-est" OR "most":
Examples;
Superlative
quiet the most quiet / the quiest
clever
narrow
Simple
