![1) Will using sunscreen in SLE patients prevent Vitamin D production?
Photosynthesis of vitamin D can be considered perfectly adequate in the majority of
populations, especially the exposure to sun UV rays for 10 – 15 minutes, while exposing arms,
legs, abdomen and back, two to three times a week. This intentional UV exposure has been
recommended by different institutions in order to increase vitamin D levels. Any period longer
than that, the body will dispose of any further produced vitamin D. At the same wavelength &
period of time, your sun exposure is giving you sun damage if your skin is not protected by
sunscreen. Actually regardless of any amount of sunscreen used, some UV waves will manage
to reach the skin.[1]
It is well established that Afro-caribbean who are naturally protected by melanin, night workers
and people who do shift work also have a higher risk of Vitamin-D deficiency, due to their
reduced exposure to sunlight. Over the years, analysis of the literature was controversial
regarding sunscreen use & vitamin D deficiency. However, in the event of documented vitamin
D deficiency, oral supplements should be given, and exposure to natural or artificial UV
radiation should not be prescribed.[2]
The bottom line: Food, supplements and incidental, protected sun exposure will give you all the
D you need, without subjecting yourself to the multiple risks of unprotected sun exposure.[1]

younger patient with crescent sign or more advanced femoral head collapse, +/- acetabular
degenerative joint disease.
irreversible etiology (chronic steroid use).
patients >40 years with large lesions.[3]
