Undoubtedly, globalization has made the diversification of the workforce unavoidable. People with specialties across the world are employed to perform specific functions for organizations. And all these people come together to work as team members. Thus, a team might be composed of employees from within and virtual, and they all perform their functions with different temperaments and attitudes. Gross (2002) described a virtual team as a group who performs its work mostly through electronic technology. Matthews-Joy & Gladstone (2000) added that because the virtual members may be detached both geographically and organizationally, they rely on technology for task-related communication.
One of the challenges is lack of face-to-face interaction. Frequently, leaders and team members cannot depend on voice levels, smiles, and raised eyebrows to ascertain understanding because they rely on technology. There is the need for reliable technological communication strategies to control the situation (Wilson, 2003). It is imperative for leaders to encourage members to be sensitized to the importance of this barrier and how to address it. Another issue is virtual members forming trusting working relationships via technological alone. The challenge is technology not viable in the underdeveloped and developing countries. Therefore, such virtual meetings are mostly chaotic.
For instance, in Ghana, sometimes in the course of working on your assignment, the power goes off. I had it very tough when I started the program. Summary of Week 4 Chapter Readings
Introduction
The readings this week went into great detail about the importance of working in groups and teams. This information could be helpful to anyone in various fields in order to better their outcomes of work. It is important to know all the factors that play a role in groups and teams, including the differences between the two, as they vary in several ways.
Literature Review
Chapter 9 is important for understanding groups and why they behave certain ways. The properties discussed in the chapter include the following: “roles, norms, status, size, cohesiveness, and diversity” (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 139). Roles are behavioral patterns expressed by an individual in relation to a position they have. Roles can be a job, a volunteer, a parent, an advisor, all having different expectations and requirements. Next is norms, meaning expected behavior of what should be done and not be done in various situations (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 140). Robbins and Judge (2018) explain status to be “a socially defined position or rank given to groups or group members by others” (p. 144). In addition, size is important to any group because it may have an effect depending on how many people are involved. One of the most well-known issues associated with groups is called social loafing. Social loafing is when individuals exhibit less effort than they would if they were working alone (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 146). Cohesiveness is how well a group works together based on several factors like group size, encouragement, and time spent together (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 147). The last property to be discussed is diversity. Diversity refers to the similarities and differences among group members.
Just like in any situation, there are strengths and weaknesses of decisions made within a group. Some of the strengths include, a well-rounded foundation of knowledge, various options, and increased acceptance (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 149). The weaknesses of decisions made within a group are the amount of time it takes, and differences of opinion in the group (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 149).
In chapter 10 on “Understanding Work Teams”, a lot of valuable knowledge is covered. It is important to understand the difference between groups and teams. Groups are working towards gathering information, differences of opinions, sometimes positive/negative, while teams are positive and work towards one goal together (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 155). There are four common teams discussed in the chapter including: “problem-solving teams, self-managed work teams, cross-functional teams, and virtual teams” (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 156). Summary The present study explores the dynamics of conflict management as a team phenomenon. The
study examines how the input variable of task structure (task interdependence) is related to
team conflict management style (cooperative versus competitive) and to team performance,
and how team identity moderates these relationships. Seventy-seven intact work teams from
high-technology companies participated in the study. Results revealed that at high levels of
team identity, task interdependence was positively associated with the cooperative style of
conflict management, which in turn fostered team performance. Although a negative associ-
ation was found between competitive style and team performance, this style of team conflict
management did not mediate between the interactive effect of task interdependence and team

Introduction
In modern organizations, teams have become the method of choice for responding quickly to
technological and market changes and thus improving the organization’s chances of survival (Illgen,
Hollenbeck, Johnson, & Jundt, 2006; Richter, West, van Dick, & Dawson, 2006). Considerable
research effort and human energy have been invested in understanding how to create and develop
effective teams (e.g., Illgen et al., 2006). Although research on teams within organizations has
developed somewhat independently from research on organizational conflict, over the past 20 years an
increasing number of studies have emphasized the impact of conflict on team dynamics and outcomes
(De Dreu & Beersma, 2005; Tjosvold, Hui, & Yu, 2005). Conflicts are common within the
interpersonal context of teams, as are attempts made to manage these conflicts (De Dreu & van de
Vliert, 1997; Rahim, Magner, & Shapiro, 2000). In such conflicts, team members become aware of
discrepancies, incompatible wishes, or incompatible desires (Jehn & Mannix, 2001). Among other
issues, teams must contend with conflicts over how to distribute work and rewards effectively and
fairly, how to cope with social loafing, and how best to accomplish their goals (Wageman, 1995).

Discuss the varied challenges faced by leaders or managers concerning teams made of a diverse workforce. Include considerations such as how some team members might be from different countries or how the teams might meet virtually.
Undoubtedly, globalization has made the diversification of the workforce unavoidable. People with specialties across the world are employed to perform specific functions for organizations. And all these people come together to work as team members. Thus, a team might be composed of employees from within and virtual, and they all perform their functions with different temperaments and attitudes. Gross (2002) described a virtual team as a group who performs its work mostly through electronic technology. Matthews-Joy & Gladstone (2000) added that because the virtual members may be detached both geographically and organizationally, they rely on technology for task-related communication.
One of the challenges is lack of face-to-face interaction. Frequently, leaders and team members cannot depend on voice levels, smiles, and raised eyebrows to ascertain understanding because they rely on technology. There is the need for reliable technological communication strategies to control the situation (Wilson, 2003). It is imperative for leaders to encourage members to be sensitized to the importance of this barrier and how to address it. Another issue is virtual members forming trusting working relationships via technological alone. The challenge is technology not viable in the underdeveloped and developing countries. Therefore, such virtual meetings are mostly chaotic.
For instance, in Ghana, sometimes in the course of working on your assignment, the power goes off. I had it very tough when I started the program. In fact, I had to acquire an inverter to store energy for use when the power went off. Other times it may not be a power problem but the inability to access the Internet. According to Duarte & Snyder (2001), leaders must endeavor to watch members keenly in support of creating positive interpersonal relationships. Summary of Week 4 Chapter Readings
Introduction
The readings this week went into great detail about the importance of working in groups and teams. This information could be helpful to anyone in various fields in order to better their outcomes of work. It is important to know all the factors that play a role in groups and teams, including the differences between the two, as they vary in several ways.
Literature Review
Chapter 9 is important for understanding groups and why they behave certain ways. The properties discussed in the chapter include the following: “roles, norms, status, size, cohesiveness, and diversity” (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 139). Roles are behavioral patterns expressed by an individual in relation to a position they have. Roles can be a job, a volunteer, a parent, an advisor, all having different expectations and requirements. Next is norms, meaning expected behavior of what should be done and not be done in various situations (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 140). Robbins and Judge (2018) explain status to be “a socially defined position or rank given to groups or group members by others” (p. 144). In addition, size is important to any group because it may have an effect depending on how many people are involved. One of the most well-known issues associated with groups is called social loafing. Social loafing is when individuals exhibit less effort than they would if they were working alone (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 146). Cohesiveness is how well a group works together based on several factors like group size, encouragement, and time spent together (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 147). The last property to be discussed is diversity. Diversity refers to the similarities and differences among group members.
Just like in any situation, there are strengths and weaknesses of decisions made within a group. Some of the strengths include, a well-rounded foundation of knowledge, various options, and increased acceptance (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 149). The weaknesses of decisions made within a group are the amount of time it takes, and differences of opinion in the group (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 149).
In chapter 10 on “Understanding Work Teams”, a lot of valuable knowledge is covered. It is important to understand the difference between groups and teams. Groups are working towards gathering information, differences of opinions, sometimes positive/negative, while teams are positive and work towards one goal together (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 155). There are four common teams discussed in the chapter including: “problem-solving teams, self-managed work teams, cross-functional teams, and virtual teams” (Robbins & Judge, 2018, p. 156). I found it to be important to understand that not everyone is a team player and it takes the right environment to encourage team involvement. Although .

Summary The present study explores the dynamics of conflict management as a team phenomenon. The
study examines how the input variable of task structure (task interdependence) is related to
team conflict management style (cooperative versus competitive) and to team performance,
and how team identity moderates these relationships. Seventy-seven intact work teams from
high-technology companies participated in the study. Results revealed that at high levels of
team identity, task interdependence was positively associated with the cooperative style of
conflict management, which in turn fostered team performance. Although a negative associ-
ation was found between competitive style and team performance, this style of team conflict
management did not mediate between the interactive effect of task interdependence and team

Introduction
In modern organizations, teams have become the method of choice for responding quickly to
technological and market changes and thus improving the organization’s chances of survival (Illgen,
Hollenbeck, Johnson, & Jundt, 2006; Richter, West, van Dick, & Dawson, 2006). Considerable
research effort and human energy have been invested in understanding how to create and develop
effective teams (e.g., Illgen et al., 2006). Although research on teams within organizations has
developed somewhat independently from research on organizational conflict, over the past 20 years an
increasing number of studies have emphasized the impact of conflict on team dynamics and outcomes
(De Dreu & Beersma, 2005; Tjosvold, Hui, & Yu, 2005). Conflicts are common within the
interpersonal context of teams, as are attempts made to manage these conflicts (De Dreu & van de
Vliert, 1997; Rahim, Magner, & Shapiro, 2000). In such conflicts, team members become aware of
discrepancies, incompatible wishes, or incompatible desires (Jehn & Mannix, 2001). Among other
issues, teams must contend with conflicts over how to distribute work and rewards effectively and
fairly, how to cope with social loafing, and how best to accomplish their goals (Wageman, 1995).

- Role-play reactions by having groups imagine how the competitor or other stakeholders might view options. Taking others' perspectives leads to more robust discussions and vetting of ideas.
- Repeat role-plays with groups switching sides to gain new insights and ensure all aspects are thoroughly debated before deciding. The process of arguing multiple viewpoints strengthens the final solution.
