3. There is compassion or perhaps a mantra in Dr Zulekha’s brand
of care, which has benefitted innumerous patrons for the last
five decades, leaving a lasting impact in the region. In her own
words, “Beyond the technology, besides the specialists, there is
something more – the magic of a caring touch.” It is that charisma
and quality, which makes people fondly call her as ‘Mama Zulekha’.
The Group has now reached the zenith of excellence in healthcare,
thanks largely to Dr Zulekha’s strong ethic of compassion.
The journey started in the early 1960s when Dr Zulekha Daud
came to the UAE after completing her medical degree from the
Government Medical College in Nagpur, India. It was her father,
Sadiq Vali, who advised her to go to the Gulf. Choosing the UAE
over a lucrative career in the UK, she helped people in deep need
of medical treatment. During those days the UAE was a vast
expanse of desert without any electricity; medical facilities were
rudimentary to say the least. But despite unfavourable conditions
Dr Zulekha decided to stay on and serve the people with a rare
display of selflessness. Since there were no hospitals in those
Epitome of excellence
The journey of Dr Zulekha Daud, Founder and Managing Director, Zulekha
Healthcare Group, has been truly inspirational
days, she travelled door-to-door to attend to normal deliveries.
With her dedicated service, she was able to capture the hearts
of the nationals and expatriates alike. In her own words, “What
I did was nothing greater than the need for medical attention. I
borrowed strength from the overwhelming need of the people in
this country.”
Even today Dr Zulekha wears the same spirit and passion to serve
people suffering from various medical problems. Although these
days her involvement is largely administrative, the 74-year-old is
consumed by her abiding love for work. Having single-handedly
elevated service to mankind to a new level, Dr Zulekha is now
synonymous with care and compassion in the UAE. The arduous
journey of the country’s first lady doctor represents a story of
strength and determination, and serves as an inspiration to
women and countless others.
About women, Dr Zulekha says, “Being a mother is a great feeling.
It is an emotion of care. As a thumb rule, women tend to nurture
and love more than others. They empathise, they give, they feel –
which makes them motherly. Even as a little girl, I knew I wanted to
care and give comfort to society so I grew up to become a doctor
and with it came my identity.”
Dr Zulekha has been hailed as a symbol of courage and conviction.
In 1991, she met with a horrific accident leaving her battling for life
in the ICU for several days with 18 fractured bones. With sheer
determination, she took to heavy exercises till she recuperated
and began to walk again. Today, at her age, her health continues
to invigorate others.
Dr Zulekha started practising from her clinic in Sharjah in 1964.
Braving hard times, with just a bag and a few basic amenities
(there were no nurses or assistants) she dedicated herself to
the women who needed her services. Some cases came from
faraway places but she treated one and all. Her biggest reward
was to see the women relieved of their labour anxieties, holding
the newborns in their laps.
In 1992, Dr Zulekha realised her dream with the establishment of
Zulekha Hospital, Sharjah, followed by a medical centre in Dhaid.
The year 2005 saw the establishment of a second hospital in
Dubai. The 75-bed multi-speciality hospital has since proved to
be a boon for the residents of Al Qusais, Al Nahda and Mirdiff.
The hospitals represent Dr Zulekha’s personality of care and
compassion. Regarded as the Zulekha spirit, it can be found in
the doctors and staff at all times. Under her eminent leadership,
Zulekha Healthcare Group is now one of the largest private
healthcare networks in the Gulf. With more than 1,250 personnel
including over 200 qualified doctors, staff nurses and a host
of paramedical staff, the Group represents comprehensive
healthcare that is accessible to anyone in need of medical
attention – delivered through two multi-speciality hospitals, three
medical centres and three pharmacies.
Awards and accolades have been heaped on her in recognition
of her services. Dr Zulekha has been voted as the Gulf’s most
powerful Indian women by Arabian Business Power. She was
also included in the top 10 of the most influential Indians in
the Gulf by Arabian Business Power list. Every year, Zulekha
Hospitals under her leadership have been supporting various
corporate community initiatives in the UAE, notably — Beat
Diabetes of Landmark Group, Think Pink Initiative of Joyalukkas,
Terry Fox Run, etc.
Dr Zulekha is the winner of the International Women’s Day
Excellence Award by ‘Dhwani’, the New Global Indian Excellence
Award and the Lifetime Achievement – Healthcare Award for her
iconic leadership and outstanding contribution to the industry at
the Power Brands Hall of Fame 2012. She was recently bestowed
with a Gr8! Women Award for her outstanding contribution in
the healthcare industry and “Outstanding Contribution of an
Individual to the Middle East Healthcare Industry Award” at the
Arab Health Awards.
In the same year, Zulekha Hospital (Dubai and Sharjah) received
the Dubai Quality Award from Shaikh Maktoum bin Mohammed
bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and President
of DIFC, for emphasising quality healthcare in the region. DHA
honoured the Zulekha Hospital and Medical Centre (Dubai) in
the accreditation ceremony for continuous cooperation towards
providing high quality medical care for the population of Dubai.
This award was received from Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed
bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of
Dubai Executive Council.
Dr Zulekha firmly believes in the importance of good education.
This is evident from her active involvement in several charitable
causes and societal works despite her hectic engagements. She
established a charitable trust under the name of ZED Vocational
and Training Centre in 2004, mainly providing education to the
needy segments of society in an unprivileged area of Nagpur.

4. The trust is running a college in a backward area of Nagpur,
where there are no educational institutes. The college is providing
courses in commerce, science, technology and management.
In 2006, ZED kindergarten was established for nursery,
KG I and KG II classes. Besides providing computers for computer
courses, it imparts education free of cost to poor students. Taking
her brand of care to a place where people are bereft of basic
medical amenities, Zulekha Group established Alexis Hospital
in Nagpur to meet the medical needs of the local communities.
These are just some of the endeavours of Dr Zulekha who believes
in contributing to the society by empowering it with knowledge.
Key projects undertaken by Dr Zulekha Trust for social and
humanitarian causes during the last four years include blood
donation camps, contribution of common medicines and surgical
accessories, cleanliness drive in slum areas, and supporting an
institution dedicated to the well-being of mentally challenged
children.
Over the years, Dr Zulekha has helped build closer relations
between the overseas Indian community and the country of her
birth, India. She has initiated a book donation drive in the UAE,
where huge collection of books on various subjects are collected
and sent to academic libraries to benefit students. Poor students
in India are helped through educational scholarships, books, etc.
to maintain the growth of human resources, by the support of
establishments run by overseas Indians.
In the words of Dr Zulekha, ”My motto in life has been very
simple. I do my best and let the rest find its place. I am flexible in
my progress. I am open to new ideas. I appreciate growth and
I admire humility. I think the biggest success comes when we
allow ourselves to be large enough to accept when we have
been wrong. To move forward with learning is better than only
moving forward and not understanding the lessons along the way.
Times change, circumstances change, people change – how you
change with it is what makes or breaks you.”
It is obviously an arduous task to truncate Dr Zulekha’s profile.
But she is arguably the highest woman achiever in the UAE from
the Indian community. As the founder of one of the largest private
healthcare networks in the Gulf, she continues to be an epitome of
what a woman can achieve through sheer grit and determination,
and of course, a lot of courage and perseverance.

5. greater growth, development and challenges. “We wish to be
more equipped to perform sophisticated medical procedures
and become a process and procedure-driven organisation that
focuses on improving quality, reducing mortality and morbidity.
Basically, working on all the things that will help us become a
world-class institution,” she says.
With the inauguration of the new 90-bed facility in Sharjah, in the
same vicinity as the old building, the two leaders are drawing a
blue print for the expansion of its hospital in Dubai.
“Over the course of our journey, we have tried to keep her
(Dr Zulekha’s) values intact — integrity, patient focus, try and
give the best deal to the patient, to make it as easy as possible.
Our endeavour is to make the whole experience and process
of healthcare services unintimidating, and remove fear. We also
try to make the experience of patients relaxed by reducing the
waiting time,” says Shams.
Beyond the boardroom decisions and meetings, Dr Zulekha’s
values and ethics run thick in the day-to-day functions of the
hospital. Both hospitals in Dubai and Sharjah are community
hospitals, fiercely focused on patient care and attention.
So what’s next? “We wish to be everywhere in the next decade.
Everywhere where we have a niche, where we have something to
do. We hope to be in India, more in the Middle East and in Africa.
We feel that there is a growing need for good cost effective tertiary
care and we hope that wherever there is a need for us, we are
there,” says Taher.
However, the group is mainly focused on hospitals right now.
“We believe there is a barrier for entry as far as big facilities are
concerned. So we have less number of players in the market.
Beyond the competition we feel that our true expertise lies in
planning a facility, putting it together, getting it up and running,
bringing it at a price point that makes it accessible to a large
number of people and making care as cost effective as it can be.
We believe that facility has to be used. It is not about seeing one
patient a day. It is about seeing 1,000 patients a day. It is about
having a facility that fits into the needs of 1,000 patients and lives
up to their expectations,” he adds.
"Plans are on the anvil to expand the hospital in Dubai to 200
beds from 70 beds at present. The group is also setting up a
200-bed tertiary care facility in Nagpur, India. It will be a multi-
speciality tertiary care facility equipped with sophisticated and
advanced procedures and care to cater to a wide range of medical
procedures from cardiac surgery to transplants. This facility will be
up and running in about 18 months.
"Oncology is one area where patients still have to be referred
to other countries. With the expansion of the Dubai facility, we
hope to integrate and have an oncology centre there. Transplants
are not allowed in the UAE. So once the government comes up
with a law, then probably we will also introduce that facility at our
hospital," says Zanubia.
The group has 200 doctors on board, most of whom are South
Asians and a fair number of Arab doctors too. Besides, American
and Canadian doctors often visit the facilities round the year.

Keep following your dreams, until you achieve them — Dr Zulekha
Daud had told Taher Shams and Zanubia Shams almost 15 years
ago while inducting the new generation into her team and passing
the baton of hospital management to them. The words are still
the guiding principle for the couple that has steered Zulekha
Hospital from a small facility of 25 beds in the 90s to a bigger
organisation with two hospitals and a number of accolades
patting up its back.
The journey has been transformative, says Zanubia Shams, Chief
Executive Officer and Dr Zulekha’s daughter, who joined the
hospital in 1997 along with her husband Taher Shams, President,
Zulekha Hospital, after completing studies in the US. Together, the
couple identified some of the trenchant challenges dominating the
healthcare space and worked to achieve the best for the hospital.
Zulekha Hospital has grown exponentially since the new generation took
the baton over a decade ago. The future, too, looks promising
Charting a new course
“Zulekha Hospital looked very different then. There was one boss
(Dr Zulekha Daud) and everybody reported to her. There was no
hierarchy or structure in place — basically a very flat system of
management. We tried a lot to keep it like that, make sure that
everybody has a say. But what has happened along the way is
that we have just become better organised, we have focused
more on processes and procedures, and tried to take the element
of chance out,” says Zanubia.
After taking on the reigns of hospital management, the Shams
facilitated the rise of Zulekha Hospital. It has now branched out
and set up two super-speciality hospitals — one each in Dubai
and Sharjah, three medical centres and a pharmacy network. The
group is also setting up an ultra-modern hospital, Alexis Hospital,
in Nagpur.
For Zanubia, the way forward now is to continuously look for

6. A journey for best quality
The Zulekha Healthcare Group found its roots in the year 1961
when our founder Dr Zulekha Daud arrived in Sharjah. From
a young medical graduate to a practising physician serving
patients from all walks of life, she soon became a household
name. After years of dedicated service, the year 1992 saw the
establishment of Zulekha Hospital in Sharjah. It started off as a
30-bed set-up with basic facilities for Gynaecology, Obstetrics,
Surgery, Medicine and Paediatrics. The Zulekha Healthcare
Group has expanded and includes a new hospital in Dubai, three
medical centres, one diagnostic centre and three pharmacies.
Today, we provide specialised treatment in over 25 disciplines
ranging from Gynaecology to Interventional Cardiology. From a
humble beginning to what we are today, it has been a journey of
commitment and dedication. And as we look ahead, we carry on
with the same spirit.
Zulekha Healthcare Group is one of the foremost brands providing
the highest quality of healthcare in the UAE and represents total
healthcare that’s accessible to any one in need of specialised
medical attention. This continual evolution of our services, from
Zulekha Healthcare Group has grown from humble beginnings to a
full-fledged healthcare network
a 30-bed hospital to a professionally managed multi-speciality
facility offering modern medical solutions, is the vision of
Dr Zulekha Daud. Her humble pledge to stay committed at every
level of medical attention has been the premise of our work
culture and this has now translated to the true spirit of the Zulekha
Healthcare Group. As we grow with your appreciation, we remain
dedicated to providing the best possible care.
Zulekha Hospital, a Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited
healthcare group, is also the proud recipient of Dubai Quality
Award — 2011.
Zulekha Hospitals (Dubai and Sharjah) were accorded the Joint
Commission International (JCI) accreditation for its high quality
healthcare services from the largest accreditation body in the US.
As an endorsement of its consistent commitment to high quality,
both hospitals in Dubai and Sharjah once again received JCI re-
accreditations in December 2010.
In 2008, Zulekha Hospitals received the Dubai Quality Appreciation
Programme Certificate as recognition of high quality from the
Department of Economic Development (DED). Since then, the
Group persisted with an endeavour towards excelling in quality
and this consistent adherence to high calibre quality care was
rewarded in 2012 when Zulekha Hospital Dubai and Sharjah were
conferred the Dubai Quality Award — 2011. It is a very prestigious
award for excellence in quality and a gold standard in the UAE
representing an organisation that operates at the highest quality.
Consistent to the Group’s vision “to be the most efficient,
competent and courteous providers of comprehensive healthcare
in the world” and mission “to provide easy accessibility to high
quality healthcare”, the Group is now one of the well-known private
healthcare networks in the UAE. It’s a healthcare conglomerate
with two multi-speciality hospitals, and three medical centres.
It has over 1,200 personnel including more than 200 qualified
doctors, staff nurses and a host of paramedical staff.
Further to this, the Group has contributed richly in recent years
to set benchmarks in continuing medical education programmes
for the entire Gulf region with its consistent interactive workshops
and seminars on various medical and surgical topics. President
of Zulekha Hospital Taher Shams explains the objective, “The
several live demonstrations have been a conscious effort of
our Group towards increasing awareness of super-specialised
treatment techniques in the region. We believe this will also
help in establishing the UAE as one of the poignant healthcare
destinations in the world.”
Zulekha Healthcare Group is equally purposeful in its quality
policies. The founder Dr Zulekha Daud elaborates, “We, at
Zulekha Hospitals, strongly believe that quality is the result of a
carefully constructed cultural environment. We reiterate the same
through standardised practices, open methods of reporting and
stringent monitoring; we strive hard to meet their satisfaction by
diligently working on their feedbacks. Everyday is a quality journey
for us at Zulekha Hospitals.”

7. Message from
The Management team
It is more than a heroic structure that we take pride in. The idea of the
hospital expansion was all about creating a unique “care” experience for
our customers and we feel that our new facilities at the hospital are all
aligned to deliver the best healthcare services. I consider being fortunate
to be associated with this very special project during the 50th
year of its
founder Dr Zulekha Daud in the UAE, who continues to inspire many with
her true dedication, determination and ‘do-it-today’ attitude. I would also
like to appreciate support from management and the committed efforts
from my colleagues who worked tirelessly for the successful completion
of the project.
Shakil Adil, Director - Engineering, ZHCG
At Zulekha Hospital, we strive to live up to the promise made
by our visionary founder Dr Zulekha Daud. 'Your health
matters' is an assurance to all our patrons who believe in our
expertise, and is a guiding principle for all of us in the group.
The strategic objective of our various communication channels
and initiatives is to ensure that Zulekha Hospital's unparalleled
quality of care and compassion reaches out to the community,
creating a positive impact.
Gururaj Rai, Director — Marketing, ZHCG
We as a team were responsible for setting up the information
technology and communication within the Group. While leading
this prestigious project, the IT department left no stone unturned to
ensure that the latest technological offerings were integrated in this
most modern healthcare facility.
The approach of IT while working on this project was based on the
core vision of sustainable solutions with secured IT infrastructure for
patients as well as people working to care for patients. Green IT
became the spring board to implement a five-point IT framework
— Power Management, Blade Servers and Virtualisation, E-data
including EMR, E-waste Management and eco-friendly IT products
to create a paperless hospital.
I’m hopeful that the technological offerings available in the new hospital building will bring together
care and information technology in a seamless and effective manner so that the care giver and
support staff will be able to provide better care to each and every patient.
Aliasgar Bohari, Director – IT, ZHCG
To write a few words about a long association is always a
challenging task. My role as Director (Quality) and Internist with
ZHCG is to me an achievement in my professional career. I
am fortunate to be part of the phenomenal growth of this
organisation that occurred during the last two decades. The
hospitals are the proud recipients of JCI accreditation, CAP,
ISO-20000 certification and the Dubai Quality Award. The
expansion of Zulekha Hospital in Sharjah with its state-of-the-art
infrastructure is our earnest effort in realising our mission.
Dr Rajini Ashok, Director - Quality, ZHCG and
Specialist Internal Medicine
I am delighted as we reach this significant milestone of the Zulekha
Healthcare Group. The Finance Department has been the backbone of the
expansions and more significantly the projects. Having ensured adequate
resources and support towards building this new facility, we are proud of
the progress over the last few years, whether it is building a new facility,
incorporating cutting-edge medical technology or promoting health and
wellness. Zulekha Hospitals have always worked hard to improve patient
care, innovative treatments and modern services. On behalf of the finance
team I would like to thank and congratulate our management and everyone
involved as we mark a new era in providing high-quality healthcare.
Siraj Master, Director - Finance, ZHCG
Close to a decade of working with Zulekha Healthcare Group has
allowed me to grow and improve my clinical expertise in what I am
most passionate about: Diet therapy and health. The family-oriented
environment that marks the entire organisation has provided me with
enjoyable experiences and interactions with colleagues at all levels.
The encouragement and autonomy allowed by the management
have enabled the continuous improvement of hospital services
and boosted the standards of quality, making Zulekha Hospitals a
household name in the UAE. Our shared vision is to improve the
quality of life within the UAE by providing citizens and residents, alike,
with easy access to quality healthcare. On the cusp of yet another
milestone in healthcare services, I congratulate the entire Zulekha
Healthcare team on the addition of the new multi-speciality and multi-
storey hospital in Sharjah.
Nafeesa Ahmed, Director – Nutrition and Lifestyle Management, ZHCG
The Group has risen over the years to be a formidable entity, providing

its people. Such organisations are not built in a day. A lot of drive, effort and
perseverance contribute in making one such as ours. With key focus on its
people, unmatched ability to identify the right talent, nurturing the talent, and

should discuss this with a surgeon to make a final decision about
the laparoscopic possibilities. For many diseases in the abdomen
requiring surgery, a high percentage of cases can be done
laparoscopically.
Advantages
There are many advantages to the patients undergoing keyhole
surgery when compared to an open procedure
Reduced blood loss:• Reduces the chance of needing a
blood transfusion
Smaller incision:• Reduces pain and shortens recovery time
Less pain:• Less medication
Reduced infections:• Due to reduced exposure of internal
organs to the possible external contaminants, risk of accruing
infections is reduced
Relatively small scar:• Since the keyhole surgery involves a
small opening, it leaves relatively a very small scar in the body
Shorter recovery•
Quick ambulation•
Quicker resumption of diet•
Shorter hospital stay•
Quicker return to normal activities•
Less impairment of pulmonary function•
Less suppression of the immune system•
BARIATRIC SURGERY CENTRE
Most weight-loss programmes are based on a combination of
diet, behaviour modification, and regular exercise. However,
published scientific papers report that these methods do not help
resolve morbid obesity because they fail to help people maintain
weight loss. In fact, more than 90 per cent of people regain the
weight they lose within a few years after treatment.
Several factors can contribute to weight gain. Diet and exercise
programmes address factors that can be modified such as
lifestyle and behaviour. However, because these methods fail to
help people achieve and maintain a healthier weight, a strong link
between our genetic makeup (which we're born with) and obesity
are postulated. Obesity surgery evolved dramatically during the
last decade.
There are many surgical options — adjustable gastric banding,
sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. All of these surgeries are
done by laparoscopic or keyhole surgery.

Among several poignant initiatives, the Group pioneered
sustainability as an established model in the healthcare fraternity
through EFFORT – Earth Friends For Optimum Results Tomorrow
in 2008, which has since become a conscious management

The city is in close proximity to states like Madhya Pradesh,
Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. The unique location of Nagpur
not only helps Alexis to serve its local population but also be a
one-stop healthcare facility for the population of nearby town
and cities of these states. The hospital is under construction
and expected to be operational by the third quarter of 2015. Like
other Zulekha healthcare group facilities in the UAE, this 200-
bed hospital, equipped with the latest equipment and facilities,
is expected to provide quality care as per the standards of Joint
Commission International.
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in India, with about
2.5 million cancer patients, one million new cases added every
year and with a chance of the disease rising five-fold by 2025.
Dr Zulekha Daud has decided to join the movement to fight
cancer by recognising that the challenges India faces in delivering
equitable, quality and affordable cancer care to all is a big
challenge. Being a large country, the absence of quality and
Zulekha Hospital takes pride in assessing regional challenges
while attending to the health concerns of people from all over the
GCC region and the Indian sub-continent. The Group’s blueprint
for accessible care has received backing in the form of financial
aid from IFC, the international monetary organisation that selects
only the most potent projects after stringent auditing processes.
Backed by IFC, the Group has expanded operations in central
India through Alexis Hospital, which is positioned as a multi-
speciality healthcare unit. This hospital will cater to the central
Indian region around Nagpur, which currently lacks healthcare
units to provide cancer treatment among other facilities.

accessible care is a huge concern for the population in the region.
With the proposed Alexis Hospital, all under-one-roof facility for
cancer, patients from Central India would not have to go to far-
off places like Hyderabad, Mumbai for the treatment — causing
great inconvenience to the patients and their relatives. This also
significantly increases the overall cost of treatment. Alexis will
be a superspeciality hospital for oncology (cancer). Oncology
department will be equipped with the latest in Linear Accelerators
(LINAC), Brachytherapy, Radiation Therapy and CT Simulatoin, thus
providing complete cancer care under one roof. In addition, the
hospital will also provide speciality services across more than 15
other disciplines including Interventional Cardiology, Nephrology,
Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Gynaecology, IVF,
ENT, Paediatrics etc. The hospital is designed to have facilities
like operation theatres, MRI, CT Scan, Cath Lab, Dialysis, IVF,
Lithotripsy, Blood Bank, Clinical Lab, Physiotherapy, etc.
Alexis Hospital shall be one of the first few hospitals in the country
that emphasis on green building technology. The sustainable
green building architecture ensures less usage of water, optimises
energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less
waste and provides healthier spaces for occupants, as compared
to a conventional building.
Alexis, when completely operational, will provide direct
employment to about 700 people. It is also expected to provide
indirect employment to about 3,000 persons.

EFFORT or Earth Friends For Optimum Results Tomorrow is the
pioneering sustainability initiative in the region initiated by Zulekha

into a belief ‘statement from marketing’.
The inside out implementation of sustainable initiatives throughout

Dr Zulekha Daud, Founder of Zulekha Group, believes in
empowerment of women, and under-privileged students through
education. With this belief she started ZED Vocational Training and
General Shikshan Sanstha (ZEDVTGSS) in 2008 in East Nagpur,
a locality considered backward with no quality educational
institutions. ZED is a recognised by the Minority Commission
and imparts courses in education, science, commerce and
technology streams.
Single-minded mission of ZED is to provide quality education
with focus on all-around development supported by state-of-
art infrastructure at nominal costs. Management Scholarships
are provided to the needy and deserving students to ensure
they are not deprived of high quality education. Highly qualified
staff, in-sync with industry standards and requirements, ensure
that the students are well equipped and groomed to industry-
acceptable standards.
Plans are afoot to add more education streams in near future, with
a focus to prepare students with skills and knowledge relevant to
the industry needs and demands. Sincere efforts in these regards
have already been initiated: a large number of students from the
first batch in Commerce, Science and Technology streams have
been placed in leading organisations, including three placements
in Dubai — a big achievement for the stream just in the 4th
year
of its operation.

20. Early detection saves lives
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer that affects women with more
than 99 per cent of cases caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). To help bring
down numbers in the UAE, Zulekha Hospital recently launched a UAE-wide campaign
focusing on prevention, awareness and early detection.
Cervical cancer affects the female reproductive system that connects the uterus
(womb) to the vagina, and most women do not report any symptoms of HPV infection
because their immune systems suppress it. Sometimes, HPV infection can cause
changes in the cells of the cervix, which develop into cervical cancer. Regular cervical
screening detects precancerous cells many years before they develop into cancer
cells.
The initiative aims to educate women about the symptoms, risks and prevention of
the second most common cancer affecting a record number of women worldwide
and help save lives across the emirates. Early detection can prevent the disease as
more than 92 per cent of cases of cervical cancer diagnosed in the early stages can
be successfully cured.
Developed with the active support of the Friends of Cancer Patients support group
in the UAE, the campaign targets women aged between 35 and 55 years. While this
is the high-risk group, cervical cancer can affect anyone over 25 years. H.E. Dr Mariam Matar, Chairperson and Founder Member UAE
Genetic Disease Association (UAEGDA) said: “Women tend to ignore their health and we want more of them to be aware that cervical
cancer can be prevented with a simple one-time vaccine. This initiative by Zulekha Hospital is truly commendable, particularly because
it encourages more men to take active interest in the health and well-being of their women family members and friends.”
As part of a larger and ongoing outreach initiative, Zulekha Hospital is also starting an advertising campaign encouraging men to
accompany their female friends and family to clinics to get tested for the HPV virus. The hospital is also offering free specialist advice and
Pap Smear tests to women who want to have a check-up. Since women do not report any noticeable symptoms until after the cancer
has invaded the surrounding organs or spread to the lungs, detecting the virus early is crucial. The long-term goal is to implement a
population-wide vaccination drive to permanently rid the UAE of the disease.
“A majority of cases can be cured through vaccination, if detected at an early stage. We also want to help remove the stigma associated
with the disease as it only impacts sexually active women. Our goal is to encourage women to have regular checks at their local clinic
at least every three to five years,” advised Dr Pamela Munster, Professor, Department of Medicine (Haematology/Oncology), University
of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
Meanwhile, Zulekha Hospital is strengthening its capability to treat patients suffering from cancer in Dubai and the Northern Emirates
through the construction of a centre for advance specialised oncology treatment. This will include medical oncology, radiation oncology,
oncology imaging and palliative medicine. The new facility is scheduled to open in early 2017, and will be managed as a centre of
excellence for cancer care and research. It will have specialists including radiation oncologists, physicists, and radiation therapists.

Pioneering Global trends in
Healthcare
Zulekha Hospital has since 2013 committed itself to the GRI
(Global Reporting Index) as a part of which the organisation
will present various initiatives along the guidelines of the GRI.
This will be the first healthcare entity from the UAE submitting
the GRI. It is a vital step towards practising progressive and
transparency of governance in the group.
As part of the process, the core management and respective
department captains got together to emphasis the need for
transparent corporate governance. This was later discussed
at individual department levels and the importance of reporting
activities were concluded. As a result, the first and second
drafts from several departments have been collected and the
assessment process will be shortly finalised.
