Substance Misuse
Course Description:
This theory course presents learners with an understanding (and in depth knowledge)
of the various forms of substance abuse. It also provides the learners with an
understanding of recognising the signs and symptoms when an individual may be
under the influence of various substances. It recognises the importance of looking
for warning signs. The course also covers different parts of the brain and how certain
substances affect specific functioning.
Successful completion of the training will give learners the under-pinning knowledge
of statistics regarding substance abuse, recognising the differences between drugs,
narcotics, addiction and withdrawal. Learners will also have an understanding of
alternatives that people are obtaining that are legal.

• Drugs-the facts
• Why people take drugs
• Various definitions (addiction, drugs, narcotics etc)
• How drugs work
• Drugs affecting the mind and creativity
• Brain structures and the effects of drugs (substances):
Alcohol and the effects / Heroin & Opiates / Cocaine & Methamphetamine / Nicotine/
Cannabis / Marijuana / Lysergic Acid Diethylamide / Phencyclidine - Angel Dust /
Ketamine /Methylenedioxymethamphetamine / Gamma-hydroxbutyrate / Inhalants /

Course Duration:
3hrs

Assessment:
The learners will be expected to take part in group work as well as question and answer
sessions to enhance their learning experience and the trainer will carry out an ongoing assessment during the course

Certification:
All delegates will receive a certificate of attendance

The course can be delivered at locations to suit the client or at one of our training
venues
