2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Good Morning / Afternoon and thank you for attending
Good Morning / Afternoon and thank you for attending
Starting with a brief overview of Style Partitions.
We are specialist suppliers of Sliding Folding Acoustic and Glazed moveable partitioning systems. Style is a privately owned company established in 1999.
We offer Nation-wide coverage through our five regional offices in Scotland, Bolton, Leicester, Essex and our head office near Bournemouth.
All the products that we offer are proven in the market place throughout the world, having been installed in many of the world’s leading venues, for instance Sydney Olympic Stadium, Excel Arena in Docklands etc - We have also installed for many of the worlds largest companies.
To support the products that we supply, we not only offer a local service but a full after sales service that provide warranties for up to 10 years.
We are proud to be members of the AIS (Association of Interior Specialists) and for the past six consecutive years we have been rewarded for installations that have been completed and recognised with an award. The awards are presented to represent quality and innovation. For the last three consecutive years Style was awarded the prestigious “Gold” award.
We don’t hide our manufacturing partners, these companies are leaders in the industry and are always striving to offer innovation and solutions for all space division requirements – basically products to suit all applications and budgets.
The Style group have been recognised through its five regional offices and accredited with an IMS system through Bureau Veritas (External Auditors) and recognised with ISO9001 (Quality), ISO14001 (Environmental) and OHSAS18001 (Health & Safety)
The objective of this course, is to introduce you to different concept of space division. I am sure that most of you within this room have used or worked on projects that have used traditional folding walls in the past that slide and fold to the side, hopefully we will now offer alternative ideas and solutions.
CLICK
The concepts that we will introduce you too are product that sub divide space whether they slide to the side or rise vertically, solid panels and glass.
CLICK
There are many considerations that we need to highlight to you and we will demonstrate how we address these issues.
Click
Acoustics are very important and whilst this really is a specialist subject, the information that we provide will hopefully allow you to understand what to look for!
CLICK
We will reflect on the real features and benefits of these products, including the associated works and other implications involved.
CLICK
As mentioned previously, Style has ISO14001 (Environmental) accreditation however we can also confirm that all our manufacturing partners work to strict environment policies and FSC certificates as well as LEED certificates are available upon request, in addition all manufacturing partners operate with ISO9001 accreditation.
CLICK
And just as importantly, we will concentrate on the areas and factors to consider throughout the design process, with an aim of gaining some confidence.
The diversity of market sectors that we have supplied our products too is varied however the main industries that we operate in today are:
We like challenges therefore if you have any other market sectors where you think you can use this type of product we would be pleased to work with you.
From this picture – can you establish which car has the 2Lt engine and which one has the 3Lt engine?
No – please hold this thought as like folding walls – you cannot determine what is inside!!!
The first product that we would like to introduce you to is our Hinged Folding Wall System
All products are supported with FSC certification (Copies are available upon request)
The product is constructed with a timber frame with a face material bonded to the frame to provide the required finish.
This type of product is used in various applications and uses and is robust yet being economical. We would expect the product to continue to operate effectively and efficiently for a period of at least 20 years based on the understanding that routine maintenance is undertaken.
Our product range is offered as standard with a full two year manufacturers warranty.
Basically a continuously hinged set of panels anchored to the jamb.
Acoustic performance up to 48dB possible with sweep strip seals that make contact with the underside of track and floor.

When in position, it provides a flat and solid surface
Various finish options available, this installation reflects a Formica HPL finish.
The end panel as standard acts as a full height access door, ideal product for simple room division especially if the budget is tight.
Or a fully glazed system is possible
Here we reflect two alternatives of head track fixing, with a suspended ceiling or with down stand pelmets.
This system can also be supplied with a floor track were there is inadequate head support, basically all the weight it transferred to the floor however be mindful the floor level needs to be +/- 3mm!
A typical drawing that we would produce reflecting the system
Another typical project drawing, this time with a floor track, note the floor track is DDA compliant.
Traditional folding walls are the next range of partitions and probably the most common within the market place
This type of product is also used in various applications and uses and is very robust. We would expect the product to continue to operate effectively and efficiently for a period of at least 25 years based on the understanding that routine maintenance is undertaken.
Our product range is offered as standard with a full two year manufacturers warranty.
Within the industry today, this is certainly the most common however we will introduce you today to modifications that we have introduced to address H&S (Weight) & Maintenance (No moving parts) benefits.
Here we see a classroom with the panels parked to the side offering one large class
Now the wall is closed offering two separate teaching areas.
Typically these systems offer a typical 1000mm wide panel that slides and folds to the sides, either as we refer to single point or two point, these are options available.
Be mindful on two point that wherever the tracks run a supporting structure above the track line is required.
These details are available in PDF or DWG format if required or can be down loaded from our web site.

Here we have a lecture theatre that can be sub divided into three separate teaching areas, complete flexibility with ease of operation and acoustic separation essential.
At this point we would like just like to explain the difference between the “concealed” and “exposed” edges
This detail reflects the “concealed” trims, basically all you see is a shadow gap between the panels.
This detail reflects the “exposed” trims, basically an edge protection trim on the verticals of the panel edges, unless care is taken with moving the panels, the edges could become damaged and unsightly.
And even mirrored finish if required!
We are also able to offer solid panels in combination with glass!
Corporate boardrooms are a bigger user of glass however acoustics are essential and 50dB Rw is possible now!
Just in case anyone thought that this was a fixed wall, the same boardroom with the panels being moved.
Hospitals are also using the combination of panels, this installation is within an ICU unit where the nurses are able to control the electrically controlled blinds and raise or tilt as required.

This is a top hung system, here we are reflecting a typical head detail using beam clamps to a steel support.
This time we are reflecting the ceiling relationship, either with the track flush with the ceiling or up stood by 20mm for single point applications.
One area that we will cover further on is acoustics and you will see from this photo that the head track is encased with a plasterboard baffle completely sealing the ceiling void area.
Up until recently the manually operated system was the most common product, basically a winding mechanism within the panel itself as demonstrated, typical features are as follows
Sound absorption improves the room efficiency, these are just some of the options available to you.
A typical classroom with single point stacking walls.
A typical classroom with single point stacking walls.
Laminates and Melamine finishes are available, these are just some of the standard colours.
Natural wood veneers are also desirable
Working walls are a real benefit, these are just some additional finishes available.
New technology comes in the form of “semi automatic”
Seals are retracted when the panels are moving and they expand to the floor and underside of the track when in position
This short video will hopefully answer all your questions related to the ease of use using “semi automatic” walls!
Glass is so popular now, this system is a non-acoustic system however offers some excellent opportunities
Here the product is installed within a church building where visual appearance is essential but acoustics are not so important.
Restaurants within shopping malls, simply fold the wall back and double the size off the restaurant!
Even offices use the product as whilst the product is not acoustically rated it will offer a form of privacy

This product is a new concept of space division offering many benefits
This type of product has now been used in various applications and uses and is very robust mainly as no one ever touches the product!. We would expect the product to continue to operate effectively and efficiently for a period of at least 30 years based on the understanding that routine maintenance is undertaken.
Our product range is offered as standard with a full ten year manufacturers warranty.
The following three slides will reflect to you the concept.
This first slide reflects the product in the closed position, the panels are flat, rigid and solid – there are no signs of hinges or escutcheons or operating handles, in fact we have heard on many occasions individuals actually stating that they never realised that this was a folding wall!
This picture reflects the product rising vertically into the ceiling by simply turning a key
And finally fully open in the stacked position within the ceiling.
Not sure, if any one has noticed, however there are no side guides!
This slide reflects the major interfaces to consider when using this product.
Services
Most services can be accommodated, it is a mistaken pre-conception to assume services cannot be run through the area above the stacking recess.
Obviously the pocket area where the panels stack must remain clear, however services can be passed above this zone and easily accommodated around the fixing points.
Where the pantograph assemblies fix to the hanger points, this area must remain clear, this occurs typically every 3.5 meters, with an additional fixing point approximately 750mm in from each end.
This product is a modular system and the maximum panel width is 3650mm, therefore on a 5000mm wide opening, there would be three fixing points as reflected on this detail.
2. Motor
At the position of the motor and at every hanging point we will require an access panel each side of the opening for future maintenance works, the product operates using a motor drive that in turn lifts cables that are fitted to the bottom rail therefore the inspection points are purely to ensure that the cables are lifting correctly on the cable drums and alignment is ensured. We would suggest a maintenance visit at least once every 12 months but this is dependant on usage. Our control panel will identify the amount of operations and also has a sophisticated fault reporting system that can be identified by our field engineers using a hand held control unit.
3. Ceilings
Consideration must be given particularly within the pocket recess area, down lights can be considered and used to maximise the impact of the partition.
4. Safety
The product has two safety features as standard. The first is a spring loaded (constant pressure) key switch that should be positioned adjacent to the wall position and in sight of the opening that will ensure that the operator can see any potential hazards. On a public space (i.e. school) we would recommend that a key switch is positioned either side of the opening that requires both keys to be turned simultaneously.
The second feature is a pneumatic safety edge running along the entire bottom rail that when coming into contact with any obstruction will stop the wall immediately.
Like previously, this is a video to allow you to understand how the wall actually operates.
This picture reflects what it actually looks like on a site with the panels sat within the ceiling
This is a typical detail reflecting the panels stacked within the ceiling void.
For your information, the system when in the closed position is 300mm wide, basically when the panels are stacked up within the ceiling you see the bottom panel from each side as it concertinas up into the fully open position.
Acoustic performance is achieved by utilising an anechoic or dead chamber of air between each panel skin of the partition rather than adding density and weight.
CLICK
The product has been laboratory tested and can achieve a rating of 51dB or 56dB in accordance with BS EN ISO 717-1, the product tested was a fully automated product and as far as we are aware this is the only automated product tested in a laboratory!
CLICK
With the construction of the product and materials used, the on site performance is reflected with a test of 46dB based on a 51dB Rw product
CLICK
Two walls side by side achieved 62dB using two 51dB Rw products
This picture reflects a fabric wrapped panel with a stainless steel skirting panel to each side.
Remember the bottom panel from each side will be what is visually seen from the floor when the partition is fully opened and stacked within the ceiling.
Stainless steel panels can be supplied, these can be polished or plain galvanised panels can be supplied.
We have recently installed two wall within the O2 arena, the sides that face the main arena have a stainless finish, the other side has a galvanised finish.
Anything can be added to the face – max thickness of 3mm
Not only can we accommodate a myriad of finishes, this is a lecture theatre that is also used with a projection surface
We can totally revolutionise the way space is used and areas are designed.
A view from the other side, two auditoriums or one??
Glass is also an option with this vertically rising system, with either solid panels incorporated or not.
This is the first moving wall in the world that has used the Privalite glass system
Auditoriums have always caused problems, not anymore!
We will leave you today three handout sheets that will offer you some key information specifically related to Acoustics.
The Acoustic Check List is what we demonstrated to you earlier within this presentation, it will provide the pointers you should be looking out for when a supplier is put in front of you however, like mentioned earlier, its not always what it appears to be! Be careful!
The other two documents are standard documents related to the use of folding walls, we can forward these to you as PDF documents if required and provide a simple introduction to terminology and what we should all be looking out for.

4.4 miles of folding wall track has been installed – each hall can be subdivided into many different sizes to allow complete flexibility
We can provide more information if required however these panels are 10000mm high however a current project is being looked at that requires a 21000mm height!
Acoustics!!!!
Don’t be fooled – the “on site” performance will be only as good as the surrounding structure – “flanking” has to be understood

Case Studies are also available, these can be downloaded from our web site or we can send these in PDF format
Case Studies are provided and they not only reflect product related issues, this particular case study reflects H&S issues!
Style are proud of our approach along with our manufacturing partners towards H&S, Products have been re-designed (Moveo Semi Automatic) to reduce weights and we are always reviewing our working practices including allowing for fork lift off loads on vehicles to provide assistance on lifting heavy panels from large vehicles.
Thought must be given at design stage on how heavy panels will be distributed throughout buildings, its not easy to bend a 5000mm high panel that is 1000mm wide and weighs approximately 250kgs up a staircase! Please talk to us as early as possible as we have solutions, detachable panel faces, frames built on site etc, there will be in most instances a solution, we just need to work on it!
