This document analyzes and summarizes 5 shots from the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. For each shot, the document discusses what makes the shot interesting and effective. Some key points made are that mystery is created through limited views of characters, the revelation of important information, changes in perspective between shots, and the contrast of emotions between characters. Analyzing these shots provides insight into the film's genre of mystery/drama and pulls the viewer in to want to understand more of the story.
2. Chosen film
■ I have chosen Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. This is because:
– There are lots of different shot types in 2 minutes
– It is in the mystery/drama genre
– There are lots of different scenes so that different characters are introduced
4. Shot 1
■ This shot is interesting because if someone hasn’t watched any of the previous Harry
Potter films then they wouldn’t be aware who this character is which gives the shot an
air of mystery
■ The eyes being the only thing in shot keeps the viewer engaged as it is quite
prominent and intimidating and the viewer will want to watch on to see more features
be revealed
■ I also like this shot because its not used very often so therefore it is striking and
catches the attention of the viewer. Because it is the first shot of the whole movie is
pulls the viewer in and almost clarifies that it is a mystery/drama film as it creates
questions and its striking
6. Shot 2
■ I find these shots interesting as the first shot makes you think that the man is only
talking to a small amount of news reporters as the shot doesn’t reveal a lot about
where he is. However when the clip moves to the second shot it shocks the viewer to
see so many news reporters and it reveals much more about where the man is
■ I also find it interesting how dark the shots are. It could suggest that it is night time
and therefore the tunnel is obviously dark. However it could reveal more about the
film. Hogwarts is secret and therefore the shot of the man in the dark tunnel talking to
hundreds of reporters (which would usually happen during the day) could suggest that
its secret like Hogwarts
8. Shot 3
■ I find this shot interesting because the paper reveals part of the storyline without the
characters speaking or doing anything. This puts an air of mystery around the shot as
viewers question why the family were murdered
■ I also find this shot interesting as you don’t know who is holding the paper. Therefore it
pulls viewers in as they want to know who’s holding the paper and what relation to the
family they have
■ Finally I like this shot because it uses a close up to bring complete focus and attention
to the paper. If it was just a long shot or loose frame then as a viewer you wouldn’t pay
much attention to the paper. Therefore using a close up highlights how important the
paper is to the viewer
10. Shot 4
■ I find these shots interesting because the first shot it is scene setting as to where Ron
is. But on first glance you wouldn’t see that he is in the right hand corner of the shot.
Therefore it creates suspense because you don’t know why this place is being shown.
However it cuts to Ron which answers the viewers questions as to who lives here.
■ The second shot is interesting because it pulls the viewer in.You don’t know why Ron
is outside and not inside eating with his family and you also don’t know what he’s
looking at/for.
■ Because Ron is shown after Hermione and Harry is also keeps the viewer engaged as
they want to know why they all look upset and when they are going to be together
again
12. Shot 5
■ I find this shot interesting because it shows the contrast of emotions. Hermione looks
very upset and distraught whereas her parents are confused as they don’t know what
is happening (Hermione is being wiped from their memory)
■ I also find this interesting because Hermione being behind the parents gives off
dramatic irony. This helps give the scene drama and mystery which fits with the genre
