Mesopotamian society developed one of the earliest civilizations, with Uruk considered the first true city in the world. The Sumerians were among the first to use the wheel, inventing it for pottery making around 3500 BC and later adapting it for chariots by 3200 BC. Important structures included the Ziggurat of Ur, a large stepped temple tower dedicated to the moon god Nanna, and the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, part of the city's fortified walls.
