This document is the preface to a book titled "Structure as Architecture" that explores how structure can enrich architecture. The author, an engineering professor, conducted field trips to over 250 contemporary buildings to study how their structures contribute architecturally rather than just as a technical component. Through qualitative analysis and observation, the book aims to change common views of structure as merely load-bearing and instead illustrate how structures can engage users through their design. The book provides case studies and ideas to inspire architects to consider structure's aesthetic and functional roles in building design.
