1. CORPORATE LEVEL STRATEGY
These strategies basically about decisions related to :
• Allocating resources from one set of business to others
• Transferring resources from one set of business to others
• Managing and nurturing a portfolio of business
Characteristics
• Formulated by top management
• Strategies are complex in nature and affect the entire organization
• Long run in nature
• Multi dimensional and integrated
• Concerned with perceiving opportunities and threats and cope with them
• Concerned with efficient allocation and utilization of scares resources
2. BUSINESS LEVEL STRATEGY
Business strategies are the courses of action adopted by an organization for each of
its businesses separately to serve identified customer groups and provide value to
the customer by satisfaction of their needs.
Characteristics
• Specific - deals with specific issues that affect the particular business unit
• Short term orientation – focused on short term goals
• Simple in nature – fairly simple in nature compared to corporate strategies
• Independent – independent to business unit
3. FUNCTIONAL STRATEGY
Functional level strategies relate to the different functional areas which a strategic
business unit has, such as marketing, production and operations, finance and human
resources.
Characteristics
• Related to functional areas of business – finance, marketing, human resource etc
• Formulated by functional heads along with their teams
• Covers narrow area of activity
• Short term functional objectives
