Born in Lewis County, the son of Bessie and Arthur Gay, a sharecropper who also worked at area sawmills.
William became a voracious reader at age 12, and began writing at age 15.
Graduated from Lewis County High, and joined the U.S. Navy which promised an opportunity to travel.
Served a four year tour as a radar operator, his ship making stops in Japan and Vietnam.
William returned home in 1965 and found work at a drive-in movie theater near Decatur, Alabama, built pinball machines in Chicago, and was employed at a cardboard box factory in New York.
He returned to Lewis County in 1968, and lived there until his death in 2012.

Between 1968 and his success as a writer, William worked construction as a painter, carpenter, and dry wall hanger.
He continued during that time to write but had no success publishing because he did not know how the game was played.
In 1998, William began sending short stories to literary magazines published by universities, rather than to the big publishing houses and national magazines.
Almost immediately, two of his short stories were purchased, one by The Georgia Review and another by The Missouri Review. Soon, editors were contacting him and asking about his other work, including novels.
For the last years of his life, William concentrated on his writing & painting.

In a 2001 interview, William said of that time period before he began publishing:
“I’ve always felt sort of like in-between things. Like I fit in when I was working construction. I more or less could do my job. I didn’t get fired. I got paid. I could do it. But it was always sort of like working undercover.
“Now when I’m meeting academic people and going to these things they have, basically it’s still the same thing. I’m still undercover.
“Then, I was sort of a closet intellectual passing as a construction worker. Now, I’m a construction worker passing as an academic. I don’t belong in either place, really.”

William did not like commas, saying they “retard the forward motion of a sentence.”
He also did not use quotation marks, a style he picked up from novelist Cormac McCarthy, one of his major influences.
William won the Michener award for fiction, and a 2007 Ford Foundation Grant for U.S. Artists, of $50,000.
He also wrote extensively about music for national magazines, including Oxford American and Paste.
He left two unfinished novels, The Lost Country and The Wreck of the Tennessee Gravy Train, enough unpublished short stories for a second collection, and a novella, Little Sister Death (published September 2015).

The Things They Carried
Tim O'Brien is an Americannovelist well known for writing about the Vietnam War and the impact it had on the American soldiers who fought there. He won the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction in 1979 for the Vietnam novel Going After Cacciato. However, his best known work of fiction is the critically acclaimed The Things They Carried, a collection of semi-autobiographical, inter-related short-stories inspired by O'Brien's wartime experiences in Vietnam.
O'Brien has held the endowed chair at the MFA program of Texas State University-San Marcos several times, from 2003 to 2004, then from 2005 to 2006, and a third time from 2008 to 2009. Upon completing his tour of duty, O'Brien went on to graduate school at Harvard University and received aninternship at the Washington Post. His writing career was launched in 1973 with the release of If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home, about his war experiences. In this memoir, O'Brien writes: "Can the foot soldier teach anything important about war, merely for having been there? I think not. He can tell war stories."
One attribute in O'Brien's work is the blur between fiction and reality; labeled "Verisimilitude," 真实性, 逼真性his work contains actual details of the situations he experienced. Although this is a common literary technique, his conscious, explicit, and metafictional approach to the distinction between fact and fiction is a unique component of his writing style. In the chapter "Good Form" in The Things They Carried, O'Brien casts a distinction between "story-truth" (the truth of fiction) and "happening-truth" (the truth of fact or occurrence), writing that "story-truth is sometimes truer than happening-truth." Story truth is emotional truth; thus the feeling created by a fictional story is sometimes truer than what results from reading the facts. Certain sets of stories in The Things They Carried seem to contradict each other, and certain stories are designed to "undo" the suspension of disbelief created in previous stories; for example, "Speaking of Courage" is followed by "Notes", which explains in what ways "Speaking of Courage" is fictional.
O'Brien won the 1979 National Book Award for Going After Cacciato.[1] His novel In the Lake of the Woods won the James Fenimore Cooper Prize for Best Historical Fiction in 1995. His most recent novel is July, July.In August 2012, O'Brien received the Dayton Literary Peace Prize lifetime achievement award. O'Brien's papers are housed at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin.O’Brien writes and lives in central Texas, where he raises his young sons and teaches full-time every other year at Texas State University–San Marcos. In alternate years, he teaches several workshops to MFA students in the creative writing program.

- 2. Tim O’Brien William Timothy O’Brien was born in Austin, Minnesota, son of an insurance salesman and a schoolteacher. He grew up in Austin and in Worthington, Minnesota, and attended Macalester College in St. Paul. Upon graduation in 1968, O’Brien was drafted. He considered refusing to serve in the Vietnam War, but believed it was wrong for someone with his advantages to dodge service while the armed forces filled up with disadvantaged young people. O’Brien saw battle as an infantryman in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970 and was awarded a Purple Heart after receiving a shrapnel wound near My Lai. O’Brien’s wartime experiences decisively shaped his values and perceptions. Like Ernest Hemingway, to whom reviewers have compared him, O’Brien uses wartime settings to explore violence, courage, illusion, and the reality of combat. After his discharge from the army, O’Brien attended Harvard for graduate studies in government and worked as a reporter for the Washington Post. In 1973, he published his first book, If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home. Although he invented the dialogue, O’Brien calls the work a war memoir since it describes his experience in Vietnam. He left Harvard in order to work full time as a novelist. In 1975, he published Northern Lights, a novel about a soldier returning to civilian life. In 1978, O’Brien’s best-known novel, Going After Cacciato, was published. A mix of reality and fantasy, Going After Cacciato is about a soldier who heads for Paris in an attempt to escape the Vietnam War. The novel won the National Book Award in fiction. O’Brien has also written The Nuclear Age (1985) and The Things They Carried (1990).
