1. Emotional Freedom Techniques – Stress Buster At Your Fingertips
Do you ever find yourself wishing that the stress in your life would just disappear? And
when it doesn’t disappear (and you feel terrible), would you like a more effective and
lasting way to deal with it? If you answered yes to these questions, you’re not alone.
ISPA (The International Spa Association), working with Research International, sur-
veyed people in Australia, Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan,
Russia, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, UK and USA, and has compiled the most thorough
and up-to-date information on why people spa in the 2008 Global Consumer Study.
And hands down, in every single country, the number one reason people go to a spa
is to relax and relieve or reduce stress.
It is estimated that up to 80% of all doctor
visits are stress related. There's a stress
component to sports performance, business
and financial pressure, and most disease.
Obviously the approaches we’ve been using
to combat stress are not working. We’ve
been using the wrong tool for the job.
People all over the world are turning to Yoga, meditation, massage, acupuncture,
herbal remedies and energy therapies such as EFT as they search for ways to live well
with fewer pills and less-invasive health care. In this light, today’s leading spas are now
offering these services as part of their wellness offerings and stress management pro-
grams.
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques)
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is like “acupuncture for the emoptions except no
needles are used. EFT is an energy healing technique that involves gently tapping me-

2. ridian points while focusing on a specific issue. EFT is simple to use, and often works
when nothing else will and the benefits are often experienced in just a few minutes.
EFT is a non-invasive technique and has no known side effects. People all over the
world use EFT to overcome stress and their emotional issues.
We know that negative events or thoughts can result in negative emotions, leading us
to the logical conclusion that the negative events or thoughts caused the negative
emotions.
Negative Event / Thought = Negative Emotion
However, not everyone responds the same way to the same event. So how can we ex-
plain that difference? EFT is based on the theory that this apparent cause and effect
equation is missing one critical element: the
body’s energy system. The true cause of
negative emotions is not where everyone
thinks it is. It’s not where the psychologists
have been looking. That’s why they haven’t
found it. They’ve been looking in the wrong
place. This is an important paradigm shift-
ing concept even though it sounds a bit
strange.
The foundation statement for EFT:
“The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system”
In other words, the negative emotions we feel are the result of blockages in the body’s
energy system, or meridian system. The meridian system is a system of pathways that
carry energy throughout your body in much the same way that the circuitry in your
house carries electricity.

3. So the missing element in our cause and effect equation is the disruption in the body’s
energy system.
Negative Event -> Energy Disruption -> Negative Emotion
The energy disruption can be caused by an immediate event (your boss criticizing your
most recent project) or by an older event that has left a disruption (your father criticized
the way you cut the grass) that was triggered by the more immediate event. It’s the en-
ergy disruption that causes the negative emotion, not the negative event itself.
When our energy system is disrupted, we experience a negative emotion. If we can
clear the energy disruption, we can eliminate the negative emotions caused by that en-
ergy disruption. Through EFT, we have found that tapping the meridian points can
eliminate those energy disruptions, thereby removing the trigger that was causing the
negative emotions long after the initial negative event occurred.
Imagine sand is flowing through an hourglass, and the
sand gets stuck. A few gentle taps will often restart the
steady flow of sand. EFT works in a similar way. The en-
ergy in your body is stuck in certain places, and gentle
tapping combined with focused attention on the issue
can restart the natural flow of energy.
East meets West
What's unique about EFT is how it combines Eastern wisdom about acupressure, or
"meridian points," in our bodies, with traditional Western psychotherapy. The practice
consists of tapping with your fingertips on specific meridian points while talking
through traumatic memories and a wide range of emotions.
According to Dr. Dawson Church, Ph.D., who has been researching and using EFT
since 2002, “acupoint tapping sends signals directly to the stress centers of the mid-
brain, not mediated by the frontal lobes (the thinking part, active in talk therapy).” Be-
cause EFT simultaneously accesses stress on physical and emotional levels, he adds,
!
4. "EFT gives you the best of both worlds, body and mind, like getting a massage during
a psychotherapy session."
Now you are probably thinking thinking what most intelligent and sane people are --
yeah right! How is that possible? How can tapping on "acupoints" resolve serious
health issues? Believe me, I used to think the same way,
but fortunately, there's very real science (and results!) be-
hind it.
Dr. Feinstein, a clinical psychologist who uses EFT in his
own practice, adds that EFT is an "unusually precise, rapid,
and direct for shifting the neurological underpinnings of a
range of psychological problems." In fact, he adds, "the
number of therapists using EFT has been rapidly increasing
over the past decade, and now peer-reviewed research is
showing that their instincts have been right. Surprisingly rapid outcomes with a variety
of disorders are being documented."
Dr Feinstein conducted a study over a 5.5 year period with 500 patients with anxiety
disorders. The study compared acupressure tapping treatment (based on EFT) with
Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). After the study Dr Feinstein’s team concluded the
acupressure point treatment was more effective than CBT in improving the patients
condition as well as demonstrating remission of symptoms.
We are more than just a physical body
People are recognizing that they are more than just a physical body with a set of symp-
toms. They’re aware that physical dis-ease is often the end expression of long-ignored
minor symptoms, which is why they are searching for advise before the minor symp-
toms manifest as major dis-ease.
Meeting Demands
Spa goers want more from their spa practitioners. Not only do they want to feel good

5. during the time they spend at the spa, but they also want to be informed about the lat-
est research and treatments. Guests are also expressing a profound need for their spa
practitioners to hear their concerns about energy therapies and the mind-body connec-
tion and all that entails.
It is estimated that 10 million people worldwide have used tapping, and what's so ex-
citing is how incredibly quickly it's alleviating issues like depression, anxiety and in-
somnia, as well severe PTSD, physical pain, relationship issues and even illness.
