N
Fiesta, Battle of the
Flowers, is the
celebration of the
defeat of Santa Anna at
the Battle of San
Jacinto. In 1845 Texas
became a state.
The U.S. Army has maintained a presence in the Alamo City since 1845. During that time, the installation has performed five
distinct and important roles: that of a headquarters, logistical base, mobilization and training site, garrison and provider of medical
support. At first, the Army leased facilities in the City of San Antonio, including the Alamo. In fact, the Army repaired the Alamo
structure and added a roof so it could be used as a headquarters. In 1876, the Army began to move its facilities to the present site
of Fort Sam Houston upon completion of the Quadrangle. The post has since increased in size from the original 92 acres donated
to the Army by the city, to
approximately 3,000 acres today.

Military Medical Center USA
The story of the Alamo city's military history of medical-bio-
life science begins in 1879 when the US Army opened a
small medical dispensary, in a single story, wooden
building. During the early years the Fort Sam Houston Post
hospital was housed in temporary structures.
From 1959-1970, The US Air Force School of Aerospace
Medicine (USAFSAM) was the site of scientific research
integral to the US Man-in-Space effort, which culminated in
the Apollo missions of the late 1960s.
Today known as Medical Military City USA, the San
Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) is home of the
Wounded Warrior Program, center of excellence for
military medical education and training, and a major
treatment center for our uniformed service members and
their families worldwide.
Arguably, there’s no other city in the nation with a larger
complex of uniformed services training and intelligence
units allied with local defense research, development, and
contracting activities.

in his last days of work was to promote “creativity” and

Duke believed creativity and collaboration to be the two

national security and economic competitiveness. Today,
Duke’s legacy is seen all around us: From the freedoms

The San Antonio Segment of the Balcones Fault

The Edwards Aquifer is a karst aquifer and is
characterized by the presence of sinkholes, sinking
streams, caves, large springs, and highly productive
water wells. Karst aquifers are considered triple
permeability aquifers - water is contained in the
rock matrix, in fractures and faults, and in caves
and conduits.
Conduits or solution channels within the Aquifer
range from the size of a finger to 10’s of feet in
diameter. The interconnected fractures and
conduits in the Edwards Aquifer accounts for its
extremely high yielding wells and springs.

Karst aquifers are considered triple permeability aquifers - water is contained in the rock matrix, in fractures and faults, and in caves and conduits. Conduits or solution channels within the Aquifer range from the size of a finger to 10’s of feet in diameter.
