STEEL STRUCTURES
SEMESTER PROJECT
BY
Group 2
INTRODUCTION
• Many structures across the globe are made by steel.
• Advantages of steel structures are:
 Rapid construction in all weathers
 Ease of fabrication and speed of erection
 Easy field repair
 Design flexibility
 Renewable
 Components can be re-used
 Dimensional stability
 Repairing and strengthening
 Restoration and renovation
 Reduced form and scaffold
 Structure can start to function right after its completion
 Quality and comfort.
FATHERS OF STEEL STRUCTURES
OBJECTIVES
• Demonstration of basic concepts of leadership and teamwork in
undertaking a group design project.
• Collaborate with a team in a design project evaluated through a
technical report and oral presentation.
• Demonstration of good technical writing and presentation skills
• Application of current industry design recommendations (AISC) to
design steel structures
• Understand basic concepts of public policy as it relates to structural
design (e.g.,
• Development and use of codes and standards).

Column
1. First of all we designed columns on Etabs
2. Then we downloaded a Properties Viewer file
for AISC Manual 13th Edition.
3. AISC 13.0 Properties Viewer.xls
4. Using this file we calculated the lightest
suitable W-Sections for The columns.
5. Design of Columns.xlsx
6. Then we compared the Etabs Design with the
lightest Sections from Excel Spreadsheet.
