United Bridge Partners is an investment firm that works with the government to solve the infrastructure crisis with private transportation infrastructure companies investing in the Bridge Infrastructure Fund.
The document discusses leveraging university buildings to generate immediate cash flow by selling properties to investors while retaining right of first refusal to buy them back later. Major university endowments like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton have experienced significant losses, creating opportunities to sell properties. Doing so would provide universities with net cash through a triple net lease agreement where they continue using properties while investors own them.

Improving the Nation's Freight Transportation SystemBobby Fraser
This document provides an overview of the various modes that comprise the United States freight transportation system, including highways and trucking, freight rail, shipping and ports, inland waterways, air cargo, warehouses and logistics, and pipelines. It finds that the current state of highway infrastructure does not adequately serve growing freight needs and that the Highway Trust Fund will soon be insolvent. The document also examines challenges facing freight rail, shipping and ports, inland waterways, and air cargo. It concludes that improving the efficient flow of freight across all transportation modes is critical to the US economy given the integrated nature of freight movement between different modes.

This document summarizes the history of infrastructure funding in the United States. It discusses how the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1944 and the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 established the foundation for infrastructure development and the Highway Trust Fund. It also describes more recent funding programs like TIGER grants and the proposed GROW AMERICA Act, which aims to increase funding by 45% over 6 years. The document examines challenges around maintaining adequate funding levels for road and bridge rehabilitation given the large funding needs estimated by organizations like ASCE.
The document summarizes bridge data from Delaware's 2014 National Bridge Inventory. It finds that 6% of the state's 865 bridges are structurally deficient, with 14% functionally obsolete. From 2004-2014, 64 new bridges were built and 24 underwent major reconstruction. It estimates it would cost $651.9 million to fix 337 bridges. The top 10 most traveled structurally deficient bridges and types of proposed bridge work are also outlined.
What's behind the nonsense about traffic gridlockBarry Wellar
Based on available evidence, there has never been a significant traffic gridlock event in Canada. However, the term is commonly used in media and political discussions to argue for expanding roads and highways. The article examines possible motives for using this term, such as influencing outcomes to maintain primacy of private vehicles and benefit motor vehicle, road, and development industries. In reality, some congestion is natural in urban areas. The article advocates rejecting the "nonsense" of gridlock and focusing more on understanding both positive and negative aspects of real traffic congestion issues.

The East End Crossing is a $1.25 billion public-private partnership between Indiana and private developers to construct a new four-lane bridge and related highway infrastructure across the Ohio River connecting Clark County, Indiana and Jefferson County, Kentucky. The project aims to expand cross-river mobility and alleviate traffic congestion in the Louisville area. A private consortium led by Walsh Investors, VINCI Concessions, and Bilfinger Project Investments will design, build, finance, operate and maintain the new bridge over a 35-year concession period, receiving availability payments from toll revenues collected on the bridge. Construction began in 2013 and is expected to be completed by October 2016. The project is part of a larger bi-state Ohio
This document is a letter from Clifton M. Hasegawa requesting an investigation by the Department of Transportation Inspector General into the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART). The Pros And Cons Of The American Civil WarMichelle Love
The US transportation system consists of various interconnected modes like aviation, rail, highways, transit, and pipelines that move billions of passengers and goods annually. It is made up of seven subsectors or modes including aviation, highways, maritime, rail, transit, pipelines, and postal. Ensuring the safety, security, and resilience of this critical infrastructure is important for the nation's economy and way of life.
This document is a report submitted to fulfill requirements for a Master's degree in City Planning at UC Berkeley. It examines transportation equity challenges in Oakland, California and provides recommendations to advance equity. Through interviews and a literature review, the report finds significant disparities in transportation outcomes for different population groups in Oakland. These include poorer pedestrian safety and transit quality in low-income communities and communities of color compared to wealthier areas. The report recommends the city embed equity principles into all aspects of transportation decision-making, from planning to funding allocation. It suggests the new Department of Transportation codify equity policies and procedures to systematically improve access and affordability for disadvantaged groups.
- 11% (133) of Alaska's 1,196 bridges are structurally deficient, meaning key elements like the deck or superstructure are in poor condition.
- 13% (157) are functionally obsolete as they do not meet current design standards.
- Between 2003-2012, $379.0 million in federal funding supported construction of 691 bridges in Alaska.
Rhode Island has a high percentage of structurally deficient bridges, with 22.7% rated as such in 2014. Federal funding is restricted for states that have over 10% deficient bridges, limiting Rhode Island's ability to use funds for temporary repairs. At the current rate of spending, the deficiency rating will worsen to 47% of bridges in 10 years. The state proposed tolls on trucks through the RhodeWorks program to fund $500 million in bridge repairs, which could allow the state to meet the federal threshold 7 years earlier than projected and save $1 billion. However, the tolling proposal stalled in the legislature due to opposition from trucking companies.
The document discusses the economic and transportation benefits of restoring passenger rail service between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. It notes that over 58,000 people commute between the two cities each day, and that number is growing rapidly. Passenger rail could accommodate these commuters more effectively than the increasingly congested highways. It would also provide transportation options for the many low-income and car-less residents across the region. Restoring passenger rail service would cost around $260 million to implement, far less than the over $1 billion it would take to expand the highways. It is presented as a more fiscally responsible and resilient transportation solution that could also spur economic development around stations.
Rail Project A goal of the Obama administration.docxbkbk37
The Obama administration promoted high-speed rail projects across major US states to adopt more environmentally friendly transportation initiatives and improve infrastructure. California accepted billions in federal grants to begin developing a high-speed rail line, though critics argue the projected ridership and costs make the project economically unfeasible, especially given California's budget issues. Supporters counter that large public works projects can have broader economic and social benefits beyond just transportation.
- 6% of Oregon's 7,656 bridges, or 431 bridges, are structurally deficient meaning a key element like the deck or superstructure is in poor condition.
- 17% of bridges, or 1,323, are functionally obsolete as they do not meet current design standards.
- Between 2003-2012, $1.9 billion in federal funding supported construction of 866 bridges in Oregon.
Andrew - Allegheny County Transit AnalysisAndrew Ritchie
This document analyzes public transit access and economic mobility in Allegheny County, PA. It finds that areas with longer average commute times have lower odds of escaping poverty. Maps show population density and changes from 2000-2010 overlaid with bus routes. Denser urban areas have better transit access while outlying suburbs have poorer access. Advocacy groups call for improved safety and expanded routes/service in areas like Penn Hills and Garfield that suffer from lack of adequate transit. Millennials moving to the region will increase demands on public transit. Future funding through Act 89 aims to improve service.
- Colorado has 8,612 bridges, of which 536 (6%) are structurally deficient and 902 (10%) are functionally obsolete.
- Between 2003-2012, $918.6 million in federal funding supported construction of 836 bridges in Colorado.
- It is estimated that it would cost $2.1 billion to repair 2,513 bridges in the state that need work.
Of the 12,806 bridges in the state, 861 (7%) are structurally deficient and 1,994 (16%) are functionally obsolete. The state estimates it would cost $19.1 million to fix 2,633 bridges. The top 10 most traveled structurally deficient bridges see daily crossings ranging from 116,000 to 30,000. Proposed bridge work includes 1,907 bridge replacements costing $3.1 billion, 54 widenings and rehabilitations costing $2.5 billion, and 638 rehabilitations costing $10.9 billion.

Fabular Frames and the Four Ratio ProblemMajid Iqbal
Digital, interactive art showing the struggle of a society in providing for its present population while also saving planetary resources for future generations. Spread across several frames, the art is actually the rendering of real and speculative data. The stereographic projections change shape in response to prompts and provocations. Visitors interact with the model through speculative statements about how to increase savings across communities, regions, ecosystems and environments. Their fabulations combined with random noise, i.e. factors beyond control, have a dramatic effect on the societal transition. Things get better. Things get worse. The aim is to give visitors a new grasp and feel of the ongoing struggles in democracies around the world.
Stunning art in the small multiples format brings out the spatiotemporal nature of societal transitions, against backdrop issues such as energy, housing, waste, farmland and forest. In each frame we see hopeful and frightful interplays between spending and saving. Problems emerge when one of the two parts of the existential anaglyph rapidly shrinks like Arctic ice, as factors cross thresholds. Ecological wealth and intergenerational equity areFour at stake. Not enough spending could mean economic stress, social unrest and political conflict. Not enough saving and there will be climate breakdown and ‘bankruptcy’. So where does speculative design start and the gambling and betting end? Behind each fabular frame is a four ratio problem. Each ratio reflects the level of sacrifice and self-restraint a society is willing to accept, against promises of prosperity and freedom. Some values seem to stabilise a frame while others cause collapse. Get the ratios right and we can have it all. Get them wrong and things get more desperate.
A toxic combination of 15 years of low growth, and four decades of high inequality, has left Britain poorer and falling behind its peers. Productivity growth is weak and public investment is low, while wages today are no higher than they were before the financial crisis. Britain needs a new economic strategy to lift itself out of stagnation.
Scotland is in many ways a microcosm of this challenge. It has become a hub for creative industries, is home to several world-class universities and a thriving community of businesses – strengths that need to be harness and leveraged. But it also has high levels of deprivation, with homelessness reaching a record high and nearly half a million people living in very deep poverty last year. Scotland won’t be truly thriving unless it finds ways to ensure that all its inhabitants benefit from growth and investment. This is the central challenge facing policy makers both in Holyrood and Westminster.
What should a new national economic strategy for Scotland include? What would the pursuit of stronger economic growth mean for local, national and UK-wide policy makers? How will economic change affect the jobs we do, the places we live and the businesses we work for? And what are the prospects for cities like Glasgow, and nations like Scotland, in rising to these challenges?

In a tight labour market, job-seekers gain bargaining power and leverage it into greater job quality—at least, that’s the conventional wisdom.
Michael, LMIC Economist, presented findings that reveal a weakened relationship between labour market tightness and job quality indicators following the pandemic. Labour market tightness coincided with growth in real wages for only a portion of workers: those in low-wage jobs requiring little education. Several factors—including labour market composition, worker and employer behaviour, and labour market practices—have contributed to the absence of worker benefits. These will be investigated further in future work.

"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.
