Description
The World Water Monitoring Challenge is an International program developed to engage with nations and their communities on
water awareness, and encourage them to participate in taking local water quality samples. I participated in the Niagara College
WWMC program during the fall 2015 semester with other Sustainability Ambassadors and took samples in various locations on
campus and in the community. I learned techniques that are commonly used for environmental data collection using various
methods and equipment following proper procedures. I am more familiar with environmental equipment used both in the field and
the laboratory. Other skills I developed include: teamwork, communication, professionalism, environmental awareness, and local
community awareness.

3. Description
On Sunday December 6th from 1-3 pm, I assisted at the Project Share food and toy drive at the Canadian Tire on McLeod Rd. I
helped donators fill out ballots forms and accepted monetary donations along with the food and toys. I also assisted Canadian Tire
customers find associates from the store to assist them with their shopping.
Self-Reflection
I enjoyed my time at the Canadian Tire toy drive on the weekend. I met some very great people from Project Share, like Diane, and
some great fellow volunteers like Bailey. I developed my communication skills as well as my customer service skills. The only
challenge I faced was trying to give people more raffle tickets then they felt entitled to. It was amazing to see such spirit of giving
instead of the usual "whats in it for me" attitude. I learned that despite the negative people I witnessed while working in retail at
Christmas, there are so many kind and caring people out there as well, they just don't take the spotlight like those who are me, me
,me.

Became a Niagara Ambassador

Description
I completed a 60-min online course and became an accredited Niagara Ambassador. I gained the knowledge and skills to give
recommendations to visitors to the Niagara region as to attractions and restuarants to visit while here. I also gained the skills to be a
successful hostess to visitors from abroad that I may play host to in the future.
Self-Reflection
Durning these modules, I learned of places I would be interested in visiting in my area. Despite living here my entire life, there is still
new experiences that I can have. I found that since I am from the area, the modules were easy to navigate through and were useful
in reminding me of places I forgot about. I feel confident now in conversing and giving recommendations to visitors from outside the
area and assist in making their visit to the Niagara region a memorable one.

Sustainabililty Ambassador - Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

Description
Every year, Sustainability Ambassadors from Niagara College participate in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. This initiative is
presented by Loblaw Companies Limited, and a conservation and cleanup initiative of the Vancouver Aquarium and World Wildlife
Foundation (WWF), and is one of the largest environmental community engagement programs in Canada. Community members are
encouraged to get involved with water quality and conservation issues in their communities. Shoreline litter is a serious issue, and
since the beginning of this initiative approximately 1.1 million kilograms of litter has been removed across Canadian waterways. I
gained leadership, communication, networking, volunteer coordination skills as well as a deeper understanding of waste
management and issues from a local context.

Plagiarism Workshop

Description
I participated in the Niagara College Library Plagiarism Workshop. First I completed the online module and then joined in the
workshop Monday September 28th. I gained a better understanding of plagiarism and how to prevent myself from being guilty of it. I
look forward to the upcoming module and workshop on citation.
Self-Reflection
I learned that plagiarism has many more forms than what I thought. I feel confident now that I can avoid plagiarism and will make
sure to alway cite my sources.

First Aid/CPR-C

Description
In August, I attended a two day course to be certified in First Aid and CPR-C by the Canadian Red Cross. I attended the course
through the Canadian Red Cross in St. Catharines. I gained the skills to be able to assist people in distress and apply basic triage
and support until fully trained paramedics or such arrive on scene. I also learned how to take control of a distressing situation and try
to keep everyone calm until help arrives.
Self-Reflection
I learned that in a crisis situation I need to remember to focus on the task at hand and not what I can not control. I feel confident now
to take control in a situation where people are hurt or in danger and assist where I can with injuries or panic until the professional
support comes like police, firefighters or paramedics. I now have the skills necessary to help a choking infant, child and adult as well
as perform life-saving CPR on them as well.

Pleasure Craft Operators License

Description
I completed a 3-4 hour course online to become able to drive a pleasure craft within Canada. I completed this course as it may be
needed in my future career in the environmental sector. I gained the knowledge needed to safely operate a pleasure craft as well as
the rules of the water.
