•The year 2013 brings significant changes to St. Petersburg Housing Authority's
(SPHA) smoking policies.
As of January 1, the common areas of all complexes owned and operated by
the SPHA are now smoke-free.
The areas affected by this policy change include hallways, laundry rooms,
playgrounds, and pool areas.

•Those who wish to continue smoking outside may do so in the designated
areas assigned to each SPHA complex.
Additionally, residents still may smoke in their apartments at this time.
By mid-2013, smoking will not be permitted inside any SPHA units.

•In 2003, a Florida constitutional amendment banning smoking in the workplace
was enacted.
While most indoor spaces are protected by the amendment, the law does not
extend to common residential spaces, enclosed or otherwise.
However, smoking bans in common areas of housing complexes and
condominiums can be enforced at the discretion of the controlling organization
or association.

•In 2009, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
began encouraging housing authorities nationwide to implement smoke-free
housing.
HUD has partnered with the Department of Health and Human Services, the
American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Lung Association to protect
everyone living in federally assisted housing from the dangers of secondhand
smoke.
