I. SACRISTAN JOB SUMMARY
Classification: Part-time
Reports to: Director of Worship & Music
The purpose of the Sacristan is to assist in the execution of well-prepared and high-quality liturgical
celebrations and church functions of Saint Monica Parish. The sacristan assists the staff in keeping the
church building and surrounding grounds clean and orderly; performs basic cleaning and preventative
maintenance on the church liturgical items; set-up church/rooms for use as needed, and open and secure the
church building before and after events.
II. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Unlocking building and doors before each scheduled Mass (Saturday and Sunday) and engaging
handicap-accessible door system.
- Keep all church entrances and yard clear of debris/litter. Keep leaves and dirt away from entrances.
- Rotate vacuuming/sweeping/dusting to assist cleaning crew with church cleaning and upkeep as
needed.
- Make sure all bathroom areas are clean and have adequate supplies as needed.
- Make sure all trash is emptied and recycled in appropriate manner.
- Under the direction of the Director of Facilities Management, monitor heating/cooling thermostats
making sure they are turned on or off as required.
- Close and lock all appropriate doors before leaving.
- Prepare Church for weekend events and “set-up” for Mass.
- Check Baptismal Font for clean water (clean and refill as needed)
- Arrange and prepare chairs and pews for services as required; clean-up as required.
- Change perpetual sanctuary candle
- Dispose of all dead flowers in the church; Coordinate delivery of flower arrangements under the
direction of the Director of Worship.
- Wash down entrances and grotto area, water plants, clean debris
- Provide inventory list of needed supplies to the Director of Worship & Music as needed.
- Assist both decorating and in taking down seasonal decorations.
- Perform needed set-up and clean-up before and after weddings, funeral services and other functions.
- Set-up and clean-up from Baptisms and other sacramental events.
- Other duties may be required.
- Occasionally serve as liaison contact for technicians and tradesmen engaged to perform work on the
Church property.

III. REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The
requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required:
- Education and experience -High School diploma or GED, with one to three years related experience
or training.
- The ability to read, communicate, comprehend and carry out instructions, short correspondence and
memos.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide units of measure.
- The candidate for this position must have adequate reliable transportation and comfortable driving in
snow and ice to open or check on the church facilities.
- The candidate must be a self-starter, capable of taking initiative while at the same time being
responsible and accountable to other staff members with whom he or she will be working.
IV. PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The individual in this position must possess physical and sensory ability necessary to safely and successfully
perform all essential job functions and responsibilities.
This includes but is not limited to: ·
- The ability to climb steps and ladders as well as to bend, pull and push.
- The ability to move and carry objects.
- The ability to carry and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Candidates for this position must complete a required background check.
- The individual hired will report to the Pastor, Director of Worship, and/or other staff as designated.
V. HOURS & COMPENSATION
This position will start at 15 hours per week, with the possibility of additional hours as needed. Competitive
pay based on experience.
The employee is expected to be available each Saturday, Sunday, and Holiday. (Christmas Eve and Day, Holy
Week, Easter are non-negotiable.)
