St Martin’s Island
St Martin’s Island, originally Kamautaurua or Quarantine Island, is located in the very
heart of Otago Harbour. It is only a very short boat trip away from Back Beach in Port
Chalmers to the north or from the Otago University Marine Biology Aquarium wharf
on the Portobello side to the south. Officially the island is a conservation reserve
leased by the St Martin’s Island Community.

The St Martin Is Community has leased the island for over 50 years and is committed
to the ever widening task of care for the unique quality of life possible on the island.
We have developed from an original ecumenical Christian group to a wider group
based on the same basic spiritual values. Over the years the community has developed
a strong focus on maintaining and enhancing the historical, ecological, animal and
human aspects of island life. People from different religious persuasions and none
work together as do people of all ages. We note that more and more visitors value the
closeness to the natural environment and the ordinary simple lifestyle that is a feature
of the island. The island is a haven where one can enjoy the slow easy rhythms of the
day free from material concerns and commercial pressures.

The island has basic facilities for groups to come and stay. There is an old lodge with
bunks that sleep about 30, a large lounge and a large kitchen with electric stoves and
fridge. Washing and toilet facilities are clean, basic and adequate. There are no TVs,
radios, CD players etc. - visitors are encouraged to sing, to talk to each other, and to
bring and play their own musical instruments. There is a charge per night per person
to cover essential costs.

There is also a small unique chapel and a large double storied historic building
currently being restored. The latter was part of the original quarantine quarters built in
the 1800s.

The community welcomes all to the island. We regularly host school groups, family
groups and youth groups of various kinds. All who visit are encouraged to contribute
in some way to the various maintenance and restoration projects on the island. Tree
planting and conservation work is a major part of this.

Love, respect and care for both people and the natural environment are values central
to those involved with St Martins Island.

People are welcome to become members of the St Martins Island Community.
Membership is low key and involves an annual subscription, an occasional newsletter
and invitations to join in on working parties and occasional gatherings and events –
some held in Dunedin city.
