A Research Data Catalogue supporting Blue Growth: the BlueBRIDGE caseBlue BRIDGE
Presentation by Massimiliano Assante, CNR-ISTI, Pisa, Italy
How the FAIR principles should manifest in reality is largely open to interpretation. In this presentation it is described the approach exploited in the context of the BlueBRIDGE EU project. This approach culminates in an open, flexible and rich catalogue where an ample set of research resources are expected to be seamlessly discovered and accessed by overcoming interoperability and reusability issues. Behind the catalogue there is a rich and powerful infrastructure (D4Science.org) that enacts the catalogue FAIRness by deploying and operating a set of service and facilities enabling to actually have access the catalogue items payload (beyond metadata). The presentation describes some of the prototypical patterns implemented to enable the collaborative production and publication of scientific output compliant with the Open Science and FAIR principles. EOSC support to scientific computing needs in to Earth Observation with the EGI Federated Cloud
The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) supports multi-disciplinary science, and Earth Observation is one of the major use cases.
EOSC will provide capacity and capabilities for the fostering the exploitation of EO data, this can be achieved by federating cloud providers of EGI, DIAS, and data analytics tools. In this presentation, we show how EOSC can rely on a public-private cloud federation for delivering its compute platform for EO.
ICOS: Integrated Carbon Observation System Open data to open our eyes to clim...Blue BRIDGE
Presentation by Harry Lankreijer, ICOS-Carbon Portal, Lund University, Sweden.
ICOS is a pan-European research infrastructure (RI) for observing and understanding the greenhouse gas (GHG) balance of Europe and its adjacent regions. The major task of ICOS is to collect and make available in a transparent manner, the high-quality observational data from its state-of-the-art measurement stations. These ICOS data – from atmosphere, ecosystem and ocean stations – will contribute to research aiming to describe and understand the present state of the global carbon cycle. The Carbon Portal will be the virtual data center that present the data products and make it available. This presentation will briefly present the work of ICOS and the Carbon Portal towards open data with FAIR principles. ICOS has an open data policy with free use, requesting the user to give appropriate credit (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 ). The Carbon Portal is developing a data catalogue using an ontology based on a semantic metadata description. This will make it possible to integrate ICOS observations with data from other RI’s as well with data of global networks. For integration, the Carbon Portal is actively following the developments of international standards for eg. metadata and data citation.

These slides are from a half-day workshop run on Monday 20 February 2017 at the International Digital Curation Conference 2017 (IDCC17) on “Demonstrating the Value and Impact of Research Data Services”.
It provides the latest overview of research findings and tools for assessing the benefits, costs, and return on investment of research data curation.
The workshop organisers were Neil Beagrie and Daphne Charles (Charles Beagrie Ltd) and Mike Priddy (DANS) and the Consortium of European Social Science Archives (CESSDA).
At the workshop attendees learnt from Neil Beagrie and Mike Priddy about how to apply the Cost-Benefit Advocacy Toolkit, the Capability Development Model, and the Archive Development Canvas (a variant of the Business Model Canvas) developed by the CESSDA Strengthening and Widening Project (CESSDA-SaW). Although the CESSDA-SaW project work focuses on the social sciences, core elements are multi-disciplinary and relevant to a wide range of organisations at IDCC involved in development, funding, and advocacy for research data infrastructures and open access for data.
CESSDA-SaW is a project funded by the Horizon 2020 programme. Its principal objective is to develop the maturity of data archive services that are aspiring to be, or are a part of the CESSDA community of social science data archives in a coherent and deliberate way towards the vision of a comprehensive, distributed and integrated social science data research infrastructure, facilitating access to social science data resources for researchers regardless of the location of either researcher or data. As part of the project, we have been developing the Cost-Benefit Advocacy Toolkit, the Capability Development Model, and the Archive Development Canvas to assist data archive services.
The expected learning outcomes from the workshop were that all attendees would:
• Understand the purpose of CESSDA-SaW, the Toolkit, Capability Development Model, and the Archive Development Canvas;
• Understand what is specific to social science, to different funding regimes, or maturity of services;
• Know the main findings from the desk research on the Toolkit and key lessons learnt;
• Understand economic approaches such as Return on Investment, other key arguments for Value, how it has been calculated, and why the counter-factual and “cost of inaction” are important;
• Understand how to use the Capability Development Model to undertake a self-assessment;
• Know what outputs will be available from CESSDA-SaW and how they might use them.

Presentation on the Value and Impact of Social Science Data Archives and the CESSDA SaW Toolkit
A set of 38 slides used for the Focus Group Cost-Benefit Funding Advocacy Program (Task 4.6) session at the CESSDA Saw Workshop in The Hague 16/17 June 2016.
This was an interactive focus group repeated over two parallel sessions. It was aimed at European social science data archive staff with responsibility for bidding for funding or promotion and advocacy of the archive to key stakeholders.
The presentation covers some of the key ideas on how the CESSDA Saw funding advocacy toolkit will be structured, its components, and key facts and approaches it will include.
We expect the cost-benefit funding advocacy toolkit under development to support the negotiation with ministries and funding organisations across Europe.
The results of the toolkit user requirements survey with responses from 24 European social science archives were presented and discussed, together with suggested approaches and content for the toolkit. 22 people attended the two sessions overall, representing a mix of countries at different stages on the development path for social science archives (none, new/emerging, mature). There was strong interest and support for the emerging toolkit together with open discussion of how it can be applied in the specific political and administrative context of different European countries.
The slide set presented here is an extended version including a number of hidden background/ reference slides not used in the presentation. The focus group is one of a series guiding further development of the toolkit and its adoption being given to either: (a) social science data archive staff or (b) their key stakeholders (senior management in their universities, research councils and academies, funding ministries, national statistics offices, research users and depositors).
CESSDA is the Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives. The CESSDA SaW project “Strengthening and widening the European infrastructure for social science data archives” is funded by the European Commission as part of its Horizon2020 programme.
SSHOC: Social Sciences and Humanities Open Cloud
Realising the Social Sciences and Humanities part of the European Open Science Cloud
General Presentation of the SSHOC project - 14 May 2019
The Ascent of Open Science and the European Open Science CloudTiziana Ferrari
Open science is becoming more and more part of the daily practice in conducting science. Around the world, researchers are increasingly aware of the value and importance of open science. As scientific research becomes highly data-driven and dependent on computing, scientists are conscious of the growing need to share data, software and infrastructure to reduce wasteful duplication and increase economies of scale. In an ideal world, every step of the research process would be public and transparent – the full methodology and all the tools used, as well as the data, would be accessible to the public and all groups without restriction, enabling reproducibility and refinement by other scientists.
This presentation will show case a number of success stories indicating how federated digital infrastructure, that have been sustained by the member states and the European Commission, have become an indispensable tool to enable collaboration ad sharing.
The European Open Science Cloud was launched by the European Commission in 2016 aiming to (1) increase the ability to exploit research data across scientific disciplines and between the public and private sector, (2) interconnect existing and new digital infrastructures in Europe and (3) support open science.
The presentation showcases how open data, open data analytics and open e-Infrastructures like EGI (https://www.egi.eu/) have been key enables of scientific discoveries from the discovery of gravitational waves with LIGO-VIRGO to drug design with the molecular modelling tools of WeNMR.
EOSC-hub (https://www.eosc-hub.eu/) - the first and the largest of the EOSC implementation projects of the H2020 funding programme, has succeeded in delivering some of the building blocks like the EOSC portal and Marketplace, tools and processes for federating data and services providers, harmonized policies, a federated AAI infrastructure, Competence Centres to support research infrastructures in their complex digital needs, interoperability guidelines and the Early Adopter Programme to provide expert support and service capacity to research projects.

SSHOC pools together Research Infrastructural excellence from the Social Sciences & Humanities Cluster Communities.
A new cloud-based infrastructure to make data, tools and training available for scholars in the social sciences and humanities.
An ambitious number of 47 organisations, experienced and skilled in Social Science & Humanities Infrastructures have gathered from all over Europe to collaborate together on SSHOC, the Social Science and Humanities Open Science Cloud project, coordinated by the Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA). The project starts its journey in January 2019 and runs through to April 2022 with a funding support of 14.5 million euros to realise the transition from the current landscape with disciplinary silos and separated e-infrastructure facilities into a fully-fledged cloud-based infrastructure where data are FAIR, tools and training readily accessible, thus providing a significant contribution towards achieving the vision put forward by the European Cloud Initiative - and support the implementation of European Open Science Cloud.
For the first time all European Social Science and Humanities’ Research Infrastructures join forces to build the social sciences and humanities’ part of the European Open Science Cloud.
All SSH ESFRI Landmarks and Projects (CESSDA, ESS, DARIAH, CLARIN and SHARE), relevant international SSH data infrastructures and the Association of European Research Libraries (LIBER) participate in the SSHOC project ensuring an inclusive approach. The consortium has the expertise to cover the whole data cycle: from data creation and curation to optimal re-use of data and can address training and advocacy to increase actual re-use of data. The consortium is also very well placed to address SSH specific challenges such as the distributed character of its infrastructures, multi-linguality, huge internal complexity of some of the data it deals with and secured access to sensitive data.
