For every human being, the first task, among the four Purusharthas, must be to determine what is permanent and what is transient and seek the Eternal (Dharma).
The second objective is the acquisition of the Divine Wisdom as the real wealth (Artha). The third is to develop faith in God and yearn for realisation of mergence in God (Kama). The fourth is Moksha, the state of self-realisation in which there is no change and there is no movement.

The people of the province of Seistan rejoiced the birth of Rustum, the son of Zal, because when he came into the world, he was as strong as a one-year old child.
While he was yet a small boy, his father called him and said “My son, thou are now strong as an elephant and fit for all the hardships of war, though thy lips still breathe the scent of milk and thy heart turns towards boyish games and gladness. Can I thee to the war to cope with heroes?”
“I have no wish or pleasure or a life of ease,” answered Rustum. “Give me a horse and the club of Sahm, my grandfather, and I will go forth against the enemies of my country.”
Zal gave him the famous club of Sahm and told him to choose one from all the horses in his possession. As each horse passed, Rustum laid his strong hand on its back to test its power of bearing weight. But each horse sank under his powerful touch and fell to the ground. At last, he saw a strong young mare followed by a colt. He prepared his noose to take a colt (Rakush or the Lightning was its name), in spite of the warning that the mare had already killed several man who had tried to seize the young horse. With a sudden cast of the noose he held the colt fast, but the furious mare attacked him with teeth and forefeet, biting and striking in her attempt to crush his head.
Then Rustum gave his famous battle cry, half stunning the creature with his frightful sound, and striking her on the neck with his clenched first, he smote her to the ground. But Rakush proved no easy captive, and it was long before, Rustum had tamed him and could say, “now am I prepared with a horse after my own heawrt to join the field of warriors.”
One day Rustum was an honored guest at the king’s palace in a far away city. Here he saw the king’s daughter, Tamineh, whom he loved for her beauty and wisdom. So they were married, for the king was glad to make an alliance with Rustum. The people rejoiced to hear the news.

The Man who changed into a Woman at Will. Was his wife his or the other man's?
So the king went back as before under the sissoo tree, put the vampire on his shoulder, and started toward the monk. And as he walked along, the vampire told the king a story.
There was a city called Shivapur in Nepal. Long ago a king named Glory-banner lived there, and he deserved the name. He laid the burden of government on his counsellor named Ocean-of-Wisdom, and devoted himself to a life of pleasure with his wife Moonbright.
In course of time a daughter named Moonlight was born to them, pleasing as the moonlight to the eyes of men. When she grew up, she went one day in spring with her servants to a festival in the garden.
There she was seen by a Brahman youth named Master-mind, the son of Rich, who had come there to the festival. When he saw her plucking flowers with one arm uplifted, he went mad with love. His heart was taken captive by the gay maiden, and he was no longer master of his mind.
He thought: "Is she the goddess of love, plucking the spring flowers in person? Or is she a forest goddess, come here to worship the spring-time?"
Then the princess saw him, like a new god of love incarnate. The moment her eyes fell on him, she fell in love, forgetting her flowers and even her own limbs. While they looked at each other, lost in love like people in a picture, a great wail of anguish arose. They lifted their heads to learn what the matter was, and just then an elephant that had broken his chain, maddened by the scent of another mad elephant, came by, crushing the people in his path. He had thrown off his driver and the ankus hung from him as he ran. And everyone fled in terror.
But the youth Master-mind ran up in a hurry and took the princess in his arms. And with a mixture of fear and love and modesty she half embraced him as he carried her far out of the elephant's path. Then her people gradually gathered, and she went to the palace, looking at the youth, and burning over the flame of love.
And the youth went home from the garden, and thought: "I cannot live, I cannot exist a moment without her. I must seek help from my teacher Root, who is a thorough rogue." And so the day slowly passed.
The next morning he went to his teacher Root, and found him with his constant friend Moon. He drew near, bowed, and told his desire. And the teacher laughed and promised to help him.
So that wonderful rogue put a magic pill in his mouth, and thus changed himself into an old Brahman. He put a second pill into Master-mind's mouth, which changed him into a lovely girl. Then that prince of rogues took him to the king and said: "O King, this maiden has come a long distance to marry my only son. But my son has gone away, and I am going to look for him. Please keep the girl. For you are a protector to be trusted while I am looking for my son."
The king was afraid of a curse, so he promised to do it. And summoning his daughter, he said ...

Ignorance is the spring of misery. Through ignorance one suffers afflictions and incurs great danger. Ignorance has its origin in covetousness. As covetousness grows, ignorance also grows. Ignorance exists there where covetousness exists.
Current COVID virus is a direct attack on the vital Link necessary for transfer of Energy to Form. Our willful engagement in the Greed-Deceit group of negative attributes at Shanks has given birth to this virus.
Life is going to be different post Corona. It is a message to the entire world that we must limit performance of our activity which is based on the Greed-Deceit group of negative attributes.

The sexual impulse has been there for countless lives, and you never know when it will rise again. Therefore, it is important to remain in the right company. If you go out of right company, because of the existing impulse, sexuality will start to sprout all over again.
What is nischaya (determined decision)? Nischaya means, no matter how powerful an army of worldly difficulties arises with attacks, you would not back off.
What is nischaya? It is to stop all other thoughts and come onto only one thought. If you make a firm decision, all the evidences will come together and make it happen. If your decision is not firm then the evidences will not come together and your goal will not be accomplished.
True understanding is one that produces results. All other understanding is unfruitful.
Mind, intellect, chit and ego should remain in brahmacharya. And if mind, intellect, chit and ego turn towards brahmacharya, then the external sexuality will shed off automatically.
The illusion of sex is such that it will sink all, even the one who thinks that he has no attachment to anything in the world. This illusion of sex has sunk great sages and masters from tremendous spiritual heights.
Celibacy 2 - Means of Attaining BrahamacharyaPardeep Sehgal
In sexuality, the more a person enjoys it, the more he has a burning desire for it. By not getting involved in the sexual act, one may become uneasy and unsettled for a month or two. But it is not possible for a person enjoying sex to get rid of the desire for it.
In case of excessive intake of ice cream the vomiting is the inhibitor and the act was from outside. But in case of sex the motivation for act is from within. Sex is in the mind and it derives its power from Ignorance (Illusion, Maya) whose charge does not diminish. Repeated indulgence in sex does not appease one’s hunger for its enjoyment.
The research of the scriptures done by people in our country, has led to the discovery that the path of brahmacharya is the best inhibitor to control the desire of sex pleasure.
Celibacy 1 - The Detailed Analysis of SexualityPardeep Sehgal
Brahmacharya means control of the Veerya. The vital force or Veerya is preserved only by one who is established in the practice of Brahmacharya. The vital fluid or semen is lost and wasted during sexual indulgence.
From food comes juice or chyle; from chyle comes blood and flesh; from flesh comes fat; from fat comes bones; from bones come marrow. Lastly, from marrow comes semen.
The Veerya comes out of the very marrow concealed in the bones. It is found in a subtle state in all the cells of the body. Mark here how precious the semen is! It is the last essence of food. It is the essence of essences.
In Yoga Shastra it is stated: "The falling of semen brings death; the preservation of it gives life." 'The nemesis of reproduction is death. The sexual act is essentially katabolic (or a movement towards death) in the male, and in parturition of the offspring it is katabolic for the female.'

My concrete form is the eternal couple - the Supreme Lord and Energy - always in undivided union and abiding as the eternal consciousness pervading the three phenomenal states of waking, dream and sleep, and reclining on the cot whose four legs are Brahma (the Creator), Vishnu (the Protector), Siva (the Destroyer) and Isvara (Disappearance) and whose surface is Sadasiva (Grace) which is contained in the mansion known as 'fulfilment of purpose' enclosed by the garden of 'Kadamba' trees in the jewel island situated in the wide ocean of nectar surrounding the cosmos and extending beyond.

Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, Isvara, Sadasiva, Ganesa, Skanda, the gods of the eight quarters, their energies, other gods, celestials, serpents and other superhuman beings are all manifestations of myself. However, people do not know ME because their intellect is shrouded in ignorance.
I grant boons to those who worship ME. There is no one besides ME worthy of worship or capable of fulfilling all desires.
ADS6 - Different States of the Wise (Jnanis)Pardeep Sehgal
What kind of effort can avail to disclose the eternally self-resplendent consciousness?

• Being coated with a thick crust of infinite vasanas (dispositions), it is not easily perceived.
• The incrustation must first be soaked in the running stream of mind control and carefully scraped off with the sharp chisel of investigation.
• Then one must turn the closed urn of crystal quartz - namely, the mind cleaned in the aforesaid manner - on the grinding wheel of alertness and finally open the lid with the lever of discrimination.
• Lo! The gem enclosed within is now reached and that is all!
Intellects are the cumulative effects of the predispositions acquired by karma. Effort is necessary so long as the predispositions continue to sway the intellect
Diversity is visible only in space, and this space is in the Self, which in turn projects it at the moment when differentiation starts although it is not then clear. Rama! Look within.

• What you perceive as space within is the expanse wherein all creatures exist, and it forms their ‘Self’ or consciousness.
• What they look upon as space is your ‘Self’.
• Thus, the ‘Self’ in one is space in another, and vice versa.
• The same thing cannot differ in its nature.
• Therefore there is no difference between space and ‘Self’ - which is full and perfect Bliss-Consciousness.
The strongest fetter is the certainty that one is bound. It is as false as the fearful hallucinations of a frightened child. Even the best of men cannot find release by any amount of efforts unless his sense of bondage is destroyed.
An aspirant for wisdom first turns away from the pleasures of life and absorbs himself in the search for knowledge, which he learns from a master. This is hearsay knowledge.
In order to experience it, he ponders over it and clears his doubts. Then he applies the knowledge to himself and tries to feel his immortal being transcending the body, mind, etc., he succeeds in feeling his Self within.
Later he remembers the teaching imparted by his Guru that the Self being unqualified, cannot be differentiated from God and experiences his unity with the Universal Self. This is in short the course of wisdom and liberation.
If you infer its eternal light, then closely investigate whether the light is of itself or not. Everybody fails in this investigation however learned and proficient he may be, because his mind is not bent inward but restlessly moves outward.

• As long as thoughts crop up, so long has the turning inward of the mind not been accomplished.
• As long as the mind is not inward, so long the Self cannot be realised.
• Turning inward means absence of desire.
• How can the mind be fixed within if desires are not given up?
Therefore become dispassionate and inhere as the Self. Such inherence is spontaneous (no effort is needed to inhere as the Self). It is realised after thoughts are eliminated and investigation ceases.
ADS2 - Cosmic Intelligence and Reality of the UniversePardeep Sehgal
All that is seen has an origin and there must therefore be an antecedent cause for it.
If a thing can appear without a cause there is no relation between cause and effect, and there can be no harmony in the world. A potter's work may lead to a weaver's products, and vice versa, which is absurd. Each occurrence must have a cause for it; that is the rule.
The universe must have a Creator, and He must be an intelligent principle, but He cannot be of any known type because of the vastness of the creation. His power is past understanding and is dealt with in the Scriptures, whose authority is incontrovertible.
This whole universe consisting of the mobile and the immobile, arises from, abides in, and resolves into Him. This is the final and well-known conclusion of the Scriptures; and the Scriptures never err. The guide by which one can apprehend the metaphysical and transcendental matters is Scripture alone.
ADS1 - The Story of Hemalekha and HemachudaPardeep Sehgal
Investigation is the root-cause of all, and it is the first step to the supreme reward of indescribable bliss. How can anyone gain security without proper investigation? A deliberating man always shines over others. Brahma is great because of deliberation; Vishnu is worshipped because of it.
Association with the Wise Must Precede "Vichara" – Deliberation – Self-Enquiry. A man undoubtedly reaps the fruits of his company. I shall relate to you a story to illustrate this:
"There was once a king of Dasarna by name Muktachuda. He had two sons: Hemachuda and Manichuda. They were comely, well-behaved and well-learned. At one time they led a hunting party, consisting of a great retinue of men and warriors, into a deep forest which was infested with tigers, lions and other wild animals…
Fie on human beings who appraise the foulest part of the body as the most delightful. If one should see beauty in that body-part which is wet with impure excretions, where will not man see beauty? Tell me!

Then said Confucius: "The duty of children to their parents is the fountain whence all other virtues spring and also the starting-point from which we ought to begin our education:
• Our body and hair and skin are all derived from our parents, and therefore we have no right to injure any of them in the least. This is the first duty of a child.
• To live an upright life and to spread the great doctrines of humanity must win good reputation after death, and reflect great honour upon our parents. This is the last duty of a son.

(To think that one can lead a life of celibacy if brought up in complete
isolation from sensual pleasures or if kept ignorant of them is a
fallacy. Addiction to any one Purushartha to the exclusion of other
Purusharthas is bound to be disastrous. The Story of Rishyasringa
hereunder makes this point abundantly clear)

Why Saints advocate a married way of life as the best bet for
self-realization?
The Story of Rishyasringa from the Mahabharata precisely brings to
light an important insight regarding the interrelationship of the four
Purusharthas and why marriage is the best bet for self-realization.
Lomasa Narrates the Story
The Pandavas during their exile went on a pilgrimage and reached an
Ashrama (hermitage) called Punnyam at the bank of river Kaushiki. At
that time, the sage Lomasa, the head of that hermitage, told
Yudhishthira this Story of Rishyasringa. It may be summed up as
follows:
Once upon a time there was a severe famine for want of rain in the
kingdom of Anga. How to save the country from this famine became a
matter of serious concern for the king:
• The only way out, according to the Brahmanas who advise the king
on such matters, was to fetch Rishyasringa, the young sage, to the
kingdom.
Rishyasringa lived in a forest and led a life of perfect celibacy. By his
austerities, he had acquired the power to bring down rain wherever he
went. He lived with his father Vibhandaka.
• In such a systematic manner did Vibhandaka bring up his son in the
seclusion of the forest that he did not come in touch with any other
human being, man or woman!
Now, to bring Rishyasringa from such a seclusion to the kingdom so
that there would be enough rain was a real problem for Lomapada, the
king of Anga:

• After a series of consultations with his courtiers, the king finally
decided to send the most charming courtesans of the city to lull
Rishyasringa to Anga.
Well equipped for the mission, the damsels set out in a boat which
looked like a floating hermitage and reached the river near
Vibhandaka's hermitage:
• Mooring the boat in the river, the damsels entered the periphery of
the hermitage. Having secretly ascertained the time when
Vibhandaka would be away, one of the beautiful damsels Vaisali,
entered the hermitage.
• And she accosted Rishyasringa the way the rishis (sages) of those
days used to: "How are you? Are the penances of the rishis of the
forest proceeding satisfactorily? How is your study of the Vedas
progressing...?"
Never before did Rishyasringa behold such a beautiful human form and
hear such a sweet voice:
• The moment he beheld this graceful woman, though without
knowing that it was a woman! The instinctive urge for the company
of the opposite sex began to work on his mind. The youthful
anchorite thought that she was a young sage like himself.
"You seem to be a bright brahmacharin (celibate). Who are you? Where
is your hermitage? I bow to you. What are the austerities you practice?"
Thus saying, he rendered her the customary offerings:
• But she said to him: "I am not worthy to receive your prostrations,
but let me reciprocate your greetings and salutations in the manner
we are used to".
• So saying, she embraced him warmly, gave him fruits and sweets,
decorated him with perfumed garlands, and served him with drinks.
Embracing him again, she then gently slipped out of the hermitage
fearing the return of the sage Vibhandaka, but actually saying that
it was time for her Agnihotra sacrifice.

On return Vibhandaka found that the face of his hermitage as well as
the face of his son were clouded and disturbed as if by a storm of
passion. He was shocked to see that the usual simple duties of the
hermitage had been neglected. Vibhandaka was very much troubled
and asked his son to explain what had happened.
In his simplicity and ingenuity, Rishyasringa replied: "A brahmacharin
of wonderful form was here. The beauty and sweetness of ‘his’ voice
defy description. Listening to ‘him’ and looking into ‘his’ eyes filled my
inner being with indescribable joy and affection. When ‘he’ embraced
me - which it seems is ‘his’ customary greeting - I felt a kind of
happiness that I have never felt before, no, not even while eating the
sweetest fruits. I long for ‘his’ company; my heart pants to see ‘him’...."
When Rishyasringa had thus brokenly expressed his new yearnings and
disturbances, Vibhandaka understood what had taken place:
• He told his son that it was no brahmacharin but a malignant demon
bent on beguiling them and hindering their penances and
austerities. So he advised his son not to let such demons come near
him.
• Vibhandaka then combed the whole forest in vain for three days on
end to find his son's fair visitors and returned baffled.
Then on another occasion when Vibhandaka had gone out to bring roots
and fruits Vaisali again stole into the hermitage:
• As soon as Rishyasringa saw her he jumped up and ran to greet her
gushingly, like pent up water surges out of a reservoir that has
sprung a leak.
• Even without waiting for prompting this time, Rishyasringa went
near her and after the customary salutations said: "O, shining
brahmacharin, before my father returns let us go to your hermitage."
This was precisely what she had hoped for and worked for. So together
they went and entered the boat which had been made to look like a
hermitage and sailed for the kingdom of Anga:

• When they reached Anga, the young sage surely knew more about
the world and its ways than he had done in the forest.
The heartiest of welcomes awaited him in Anga. The king was delighted
to see Rishyasringa. And, as foretold by the Brahmanas, the moment
Rishyasringa set his foot in Anga rain began to pour down, the rivers
and lakes were full and the people rejoiced. The king gratefully gave
his daughter Santa in marriage to Rishyasringa.
Thus all ended as had been planned. The king, however, felt uneasy
because he feared Vibhandaka's wrath. The sage might come in search
of his son and pronounce a curse on the king:
• Therefore, in order to mollify Vibhandaka, the king lined the route
the sage would take with cattle and kind and instructed the
cowherds in charge to tell Vibhandaka that they were all
Rishyasringa's servants and had come to welcome and honour their
master's father and to wait on him.
Guessing his son's whereabouts right, Vibhandaka crossed intervening
rivers and villages and marched to the capital of Anga as if to burn the
king in his anger:
• But when he saw at every stage of his journey the magnificent cattle
which belonged to his son and the respectful welcome by his son's
servants, his angry mood melted away. A great welcome awaited him
in the capital.
• In the king's palace he was pleased to see his son with his beautiful
wife Santa seated in state like the king of the gods in heaven.
• Vibhandaka blessed the king and he asked his son to join him in the
forest after the birth of a son. Rishyasringa did as his father bade
him.
The story ends with this note: "Like Damayanti and Nala, Sita and
Rama, Arundhati and Vashishtha, Lopamudra and Agastya”, Santa and
Rishyasringa retired to the forest in the fullness of time and spent their
lives in mutual love and worship of God.

In this story there are at least two things that strike us. First, there is a
lighter side to the story. Secondly, it gives us a message.
1) The Lighter Side
We begin to laugh when we listen to how Rishyasringa describes the
new brahmacharin to his father. No fault of Rishyasringa, for it is his
father who made him ignorant of opposite sex and Kama.
We also observe that even Vibhandaka, the father, was not free from
Kama and Artha:
• By his austerities he was supposed to have gained control over his
feelings. Though he was red with anger at the loss of his son, we see
that his anger subsided and gradually replaced by satisfaction at the
sight of the wealth and prosperity of his son.
• But Vibhandaka is redeemed from this ridicule because it is said that
instead of staying and enjoying with his son, he returned to the
forest and directed his son to follow him later.
2) The Message
Thus, the object of laughter in this story becomes a message for us. The
moral is this:
• To think that one can lead a life of celibacy if brought up in complete
isolation from sensual pleasures or if kept ignorant of them is a
fallacy.
• In spite of all the precautions Vibhandaka took, at the slightest
provocations the natural instinct came out with all its might. So the
pointlessness of such precautions is obvious.
Hence addiction to any one Purushartha to the exclusion of other
Purusharthas is bound to be disastrous. The Story of Rishyasringa
makes this point abundantly clear.
If it is not desirable to pursue one Purushartha at the expense of the
other Purusharthas, then the question of how the various Purusharthas
(Dharma-Artha-Kama-Moksha) are interrelated becomes crucial. And
the answer is:

“For every human being, the first task, among the four Purusharthas,
must be to determine what is permanent and what is transient and seek
the Eternal (Dharma).
The second objective is the acquisition of the Divine Wisdom as the real
wealth (Artha). The third is to develop faith in God and yearn for
realisation of mergence in God (Kama). The fourth is Moksha, the state
of self-realisation in which there is no change and there is no movement.
This is the ultimate aim or goal of human life. A marriage should be on
the foundation of Dharma and the other three purposes should be
worked towards having Dharma as the base.”
And this is what Santa and Rishyasringa exactly did when they retired
to the forest in the fullness of time and spent their lives in mutual love
and worship of God, as also advised by Vibhandaka.
Seclusion from the society does not help and that is why the Saints
advocate a married way of life as the best bet for self-realization.
