Nuclear energy can be used to generate electricity in nuclear power plants or for weapons like atomic bombs. It involves splitting uranium atoms in a chain reaction to produce heat and release energy. While nuclear energy provides over 11% of the world's electricity and has other applications, it also poses risks if used for weapons or if nuclear reactions are not properly controlled. Nuclear weapons and accidents can cause massive destruction and long-term health and environmental effects through radiation. The document discusses both the promise and risks of nuclear energy for power generation or military purposes.
Generally it is believed that nuclear energy is used for destructive purposes only. But, in fact it has more positive uses than its negative uses. Basically atom is the source of nuclear energy. This energy is released by splitting of a nuclei in to two.
Nuclear energy is generated from nuclear fission or fusion reactions. Fission of heavy radioactive elements like uranium and plutonium produces heat that is used to generate electricity in nuclear power plants. Fusion combines light elements and occurs in the sun but cannot currently be used to generate electricity. Nuclear energy has advantages of low emissions but disadvantages of high costs and radioactive waste storage issues. India has a three-stage nuclear program utilizing thorium and aims to increase its nuclear energy capacity.
Nuclear power plants produce electricity through nuclear fission, which is the splitting of uranium atom nuclei. This releases a large amount of energy that is used to heat water and produce steam that spins turbines to generate electricity. While nuclear energy produces few greenhouse gas emissions, it generates radioactive nuclear waste that is difficult to store and remains dangerous for thousands of years. The economics of nuclear power are impacted by its high capital costs to build plants, but also low fuel costs over the plant's lifetime.

The document discusses the AP1000 nuclear reactor design. It provides passive safety functions without relying on active components like pumps or diesel generators. It has simplified and modular construction. The AP1000 uses natural circulation and gravity for core cooling without external power. It has greater safety margins and meets probabilistic risk assessment goals even without crediting active systems. The first AP1000 units are under construction in China and the U.S. and are scheduled to begin operation in 2013-2015.

Turning to our second are of activity, the WNA enables industry contacts and cooperation through the holding of its conferences and Working Groups.
WNA goes to a lot of effort to ensure that when you do a google search on any aspect of nuclear energy, one of our web pages will appear at the top of the list. If WNA did not provide this service, web users would be directed towards less reliable sources of information, such as the websites for Greenpeace, Wise, or Wikipedia.

The IEA’s Energy Technology Perspectives 2010 BLUE Map scenario (IEA, 2010) projects an installed nuclear capacity of almost 1 200 GW in 2050 , compared to 370 GW at the end of 2009, making nuclear a major contributor to cutting energyrelated CO2 emissions by 50%. This nuclear capacity would provide around 24% of the electricity produced worldwide. In BLUE Map, by 2050 nuclear power becomes the single largest source of electricity . Although reaching 1 200 GW of nuclear capacity in 2050 is an ambitious goal, multiplying the installed nuclear capacity by well over three times during a period of 40 years is certainly achievable from technical and industrial perspectives. Assuming that by 2050 all reactors in operation today will have been decommissioned, some 30 units of 1 GW each would need to enter operation on average each year between 2010 and 2050 . Similar rates of construction were achieved (albeit briefly) in the 1970s and 1980s
The IEA/NEA Nuclear Technology roadmap (16 June 2010) recommends that: The nuclear industry should go on to demonstrate that these new designs can be reliably built on time and within expected costs, making continuous efforts to reduce construction times and control costs by using standardised designs to the extent possible, refining the construction process and further strengthening supply chains.
IEA Nuclear Technology Roadmap: “ Governments should facilitate the construction of standardised designs for nuclear power plants worldwide by harmonising regulatory design requirements to the extent possible.”
