This document provides a history of pattern poetry from ancient times to modernism. It describes early examples of pattern poetry from 1700 BC in Crete and 1785 BC in Egypt. It then discusses definitions and examples of pattern poetry from Hellenistic Greece between 325-200 BC shaped as altars, eggs, wings, and musical instruments. Further examples are given from Latin poetry between the 1st-10th centuries AD using magic squares and religious shapes. Medieval examples of cruciform poems are mentioned from the 9th century. Examples from the Renaissance, Baroque, and modernism eras are also provided, culminating with concrete poetry examples from the 1950s.
