This document summarizes research on improving the resistance of concrete to freezing and thawing. It includes three parts:
Part I examines factors related to the paste portion of concrete and evaluates test methods to assess air void systems and water pore systems. Laboratory testing was conducted on concrete mixtures with durable aggregate.
Part II investigates factors related to the coarse aggregate portion and introduces the Washington Hydraulic Fracture Test to identify frost-susceptible aggregates.
Part III summarizes field testing programs to evaluate paste mixtures and methods to mitigate existing cracking from frost-susceptible aggregates. Preliminary results are also presented.
