1. TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER WORKSHOPS
In support to the Technolo-
gy Transfer Units (TTUs)
established by the SRTD I,
a series of workshops are
being conducted through-
out stage II of the SRTD
project cycle, to support the
Technology Transfer Offic-
ers (TTOs) and increase their capacity in running the units in more effective
way and by providing better support to their institutions.
The first training course for TTOs was held between 14-18 February, 2016 at
the Higher Council for Science and Technology, the course was geared to-
wards upgrading the TTOs skills, standards and practices in technology
transfer.
The second training course was held between 22-24 March, 2016, also at
the Higher Council for Science and Technology, to further build the capacity
of the TTOs before their participation in a Study Tour to Italy.
This training focused on;
 Communication and negotiation skills.
 Project design and management tools.
 Institutional building: reputation, leadership, influence
 IPRs procedures from prior arts to exploitation.
 Organising a network of TTUs.
Both trainings were delivered by the visiting expert, Ms. Manuela Arata.

2. In order to increase the suc-
cessful participation of Jorda-
nian researchers in the Hori-
zon 2020 initiatives, an inter-
active workshop was organ-
ised from 10-12 April, 2016 by
SRTD II Project.
Horizon 2020 is the biggest
EU Research and Innovation
programme ever, with nearly
€80 billion of funding available
over 7 years (2014 to 2020) –
in addition to the private in-
vestment that this money will
attract, it promises more
breakthroughs, discov-
eries and world-firsts by
taking great ideas from
the lab to the market.
Jordan has been seeing
an increased participa-
tion in the framework
programmes with a
growing rate of a suc-
cessful participation
over the last few years,
the SRTD-II along with
other initiatives under
the umbrella of the
Higher Council for Sci-

ence & Technology, aims to facili-
tate the participation process
through raising awareness & di-
rect support for the interested re-
searchers.

As part of the overall objective of
SRTD II to increase the contribu-
tion of Jordan’s Research & Tech-
nological Development and Innova-
tion sectors to Jordan’s
economic growth and
employment, and the
commitment to providing
support for the enhance-
ment of the TTUs by
supporting the TTOs,
and as already foreseen
in the SRTD II annual
programme, a study tour
covering the four key
areas supported by the SRTD II;
Food, Health, Energy and Water
was organised to give the oppor-
tunity for participants to visit top
organisations in Europe and have hands-on
experience in the respective areas.
The tour was conducted in Italy encompass-
ing visits to different institutions; such as in-
cubators, research centres, etc. The tour was
divided into two parts.

3. The first part was hosted by CIHEAM; In-
ternational Centre for Advanced Mediterrane-
an Agronomic Studies, in Valenzano, Bari,
Puglia, targeting the Water & Food sectors.
During this period the intensive program in-
cluded;
 Attending the opening session of an INFO
Day on “Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action”
organized at CIHEAM in cooperation with
the European Commission.
 A visit to Capitanata /Foggie.
 A field visit to see the Aqua Card - an en-
vironmental solution for water and land
administrations.
 A visit to Cooperative Coldiretti - San Fer-
dinando di Puglia, Farmers Cooperative
established in 1961.
 A visit to MEDAB, Mediterranean Incuba-
tor for Business, Creation and Change,
Rural social Innovation, Feeding
knowledge and knowledge transfer
(Mediterranean Innovation Partnership)
 Field visit to Laserinn innovation campus.
 Agro-food enterprises.
 Field visit to Parco delle dune costiere
(Ostuni).
The second part of the tour was hosted by
APRE, Agency for Promotion of European
Research, conducted in Lombardy, Milano,
and involved visiting research institutions in
Energy & Health sectors and studying the
Technology Transfer models of Milano.
This section included the following visits;
 Innovhub – Experimental Stations for In-
dustry, the Special Agency of the Milan
Chamber of Commerce which conducts
applied research, scientific and technical
advice and industrial testing.
Study Tour in Bari, Italy, organized by Ciheam
 APRE, the Agency for the Promotion of Europe-
an Research.
 POLITECNICO DI MILANO - Technology Trans-
fer Office (TTO)
 San Raffaele Hospital.
 Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico (RSE), a joint
stock company which develops research in elec-
tro-energy.
 The Joint Research Centre (JRC); the European
Commission's science and knowledge service.
 University of Bergamo.
 Kilometro Rosso; the science and technology
park of University of Bergamo, including Mario
Negri; the institute for very advanced pharmaco-
logical research.
 Final station was at the PoliHub, the business
incubator of the Politecnico di Milano.
The Study Tour met the expectations and the group
was left with the hope that this will be the beginning
of establishing stronger links between these ad-
vanced European institutions & Jordan and future
cooperation of mutual benefits.

4. In celebration of Europe Day—
May 9th
, the EU Delegation in Jor-
dan organized public events in
four different cities. The EU-
funded events took place in Irbid,
downtown Amman’s Hashemite
Square, Karak and Zarqa.
The Europe Day celebrations were
attended by children and families,
and included performances by Eu-
rovox Choir Amman, SemaZen
and Euromusicae; Greek dancing
by Opa Mazi; storytelling by Sally
Shalabyia, fire performance by
Nor o nar, Roman gladiators, clay
making, face painting, innovation
souk, energy corner, and was also
attended by EU Member States,
promoting their culture & language
institutes
SRTDII participated in the Souk
and had a special booth focusing
on three of its main key areas;
Health, Food and Energy, giving
SRTDII researchers the opportuni-
ty to present their projects to the
public, EU Delegation and the
Mayor of Greater Amman Munici-
pality Mr. Aqel Biltaji. The
HEALTH sector researchers
who participated were:
 (MONOJO), represented
by Dr. Luay Abu-Qatouseh.

by multi-resistant strains of
pathogenic bacteria
 Dr. Ala' Khalifeh
A video conferencing platform
for e-health services
 Prof. Khaled Asfar
Intermittent Pneumatic Com-
pression Device for the Pre-
vention of DVT in Patients.
In the FOOD Sector NCARE
participated with Dr. Yahay Al
Naser’s project, Developing an
oyster mushroom production
system to be more economic
and stable thereby reducing the
cost and stabilising the produc-
tion system. Dr. Hussein Kattab
also participated presenting his
project—Nitrate Production Sys-
tem.
In the ENERGY sector, the fol-
lowing projects were exhibited;
 Dr. Louy Qoaider, German
Jordanian University -
Investigation of the techno
commercial potential for cool-
ing of photovoltaic modules.
 Dr. Eyad Al Maaita & Dr.
Mohammad ElBes – Afforda-
ble Smart Lighting Control
Modules.

5. The overall objective of the pro-
ject is to evaluate the impact of
three main control measures
which used to control pests of
date palm to increase the quali-
ty and quantity of the yield. To
assess the impact of conven-
tional, integrated pest manage-
ment (IPM) and organic cultural
methods on controlling pest
that infested date palm, several
activities have been conducted:
The first activity was to detect
the reasons behind the high
losses of date palm during the
early transplants age,150
Medjool date palm seedlings
were transplants in August
2015 on three plots to repre-
sent the three treatments
(conventional, IPM, and organ-
ic). During date palm season a
weekly monitoring for infesta-
tion and intensity of infected in-
sect and diseases was conduct-
ed, in order to collect data need-
ed to evaluate the used control
measurement. The second activi-
ty was in Commercial farms (10-
15 and 0-3 year’s old farms) to
evaluate the impact of the con-
ventional, organic and IPM meth-
ods used by the farmers. The
third activity conducted in a
farm that has old palm date
trees where farmers used a
specific instruction proce-
dures; a monitoring and eval-
uation program was set for all
processes from the prepara-
tion till the harvesting date.
The last activity was school
field days, which aimed to
train technicians on IPM and
organic cultural practices
needed to manage date palm
farms, twenty five students of
the agricultural-vocational
school in Jordan valley were
trained through fourteen lec-
tures and fourteen field days.
They were trained on practical
techniques and received all
the needed knowledge to
work in date palm as a techni-
cian starting from establishing
the farm, planting and irriga-
tion system installation to har-
vesting.
