Erika Vohman rediscovered the nutritional and economic value of the Maya nut for indigenous communities in Guatemala. She taught women in the village of La Benedicion about collecting and eating Maya nuts, which sustained the village for three months. Vohman has since trained over 400 villages in Maya nut cultivation and use, helping empower communities and protect the threatened rainforest trees. The nuts are highly nutritious and can be eaten or processed into flour and other products that provide an income. Vohman's work earned an environmental prize that will support expanding programs to conserve more Maya nut growing regions.
