SOURCES OF CONFLICT

EDUC W200 Week 2
Teachers experience…

• A need to assure that students are learning to the expectation
(in other words, the academic standards)
o Indiana Academic Standards vs. Common Core State Standards
o How to search or read standards?
o Push from the top: NCLB / RTTT
• A need to accommodate the changing learning styles of the
     digital natives
o Digital Natives (Mark Prensky, 2001)
o Millennials (Self-Test: How Millennial Are You?)
• A need to create innovative learning experiences—often
discussed in association with technology. Why?

    EDUC W200 Week 2
Let’s look at some details…
(Things you may want to know, even remember…)

 EDUC W200 Week 2
ACADEMIC STANDARDS

EDUC W200 Week 2
WHY COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS?

• Preparation: the standards prepare students to be college-
and career- ready upon completion of high school.
• Competition: the standards are internationally
benchmarked to help ensure our students are globally
     competitive.
• Equity: Expectations are consistent for all – and not
dependent on a student’s zip code.
• Clarity: the standards are focused, coherent, and clear.
Clearer standards help student (and parents and teachers)
understand what is expected of them.
• Collaboration: the standards permit unprecedented
opportunities for collaboration across states and districts.

    EDUC W200 Week 2
EDUC W200 Week 2
NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND (NCLB)

EDUC W200 Week 2
KEY ELEMENTS OF NCLB

• States must develop their own accountability systems
     (largely standardized tests).
• Schools must make “adequate yearly progress” in
standardized test scores. (Those that don’t are put on a
published list of “failing schools,” and parents can
transfer their students to another school.)
• All teachers must be “highly qualified” (by 2005).
• Schools must use “scientifically based” practices and
     methods.
• Students must be “technology-literate” by eighth grade.

    EDUC W200 Week 2
NCLB & ACADEMIC STANDARDS

• Main reasons for academic standards …
  • To make sure students are learning what they’re supposed
to learn at a particular level
  • To clearly measure student outcomes

o “The standards-based education reform, setting high
standards and establishing measurable goals will improve
    students’ outcomes”
o “Whatever each state decides students will learn, each
school must prove that students are learning it.”

 EDUC W200 Week 2
OBAMA AND NCLB

• The greater push is to hold schools accountable for
  student test scores
  o Assessing student performance
• Indiana granted NCLB Waiver (May 2012)
• What does this mean for Indiana?

 EDUC W200 Week 2
EDUC W200 Week 2
TECHNOLOGY IN
STANDARDS-BASED EDUCATION

• Administrators, parents and students have
expectations about technology use in the classroom
• Your students need to meet state standards
• It is important for you to know how to integrate
technology into your classroom based on the
  standards
• This is what w200 is all about!

 EDUC W200 Week 2
SOLUTIONS…

• But what about individualized learning and
customized learning? How can you meet the
  standards and your students’ needs?
• Webquests are one solution.

Editor's Notes

  1. Note for AIs: - This Webex explainsthe CCSS: http://media.doe.in.gov/WebEx/curriculum/2012-01-10-PARCCCommonCore/index.html- We need to focus here on what is the difference between the state standards (Indiana Standards in our case) and the CCSS and why the CCSS is important; the rationale behind it (to achieve consistency and collaboration amongst States). Also it might be useful to share with them some info about its initiation date (2011-12) and the implementation schedule that extends to the academic year (2014-15). If you have time you can also create a new hands on activity that have the learners compare between the CCSS and Indiana Standards for each subject area of interest (check the “Key advances of the common core” slide in the webex for some ideas).Digital Natives Youtube: From 1:32 talks about how students differs
  2. Source: Indiana Department of Education (Webex dated Jan 10, 2012) http://media.doe.in.gov/WebEx/curriculum/2012-01-10-PARCCCommonCore/index.html
  3. this link shows an interactive map of the states who adopted the CCSS and when they were adopted: http://www.corestandards.org/in-the-states
  4. NCLB is a 2001 act of Congress that supports standards-based education reform. It requires states to set academic standards and to assess basic skills in order to receive federal funding.
  5. Here are some of the main goals● Performance Goal 1: By SY 2013-14, all students will reach high standards, at a minimum attaining proficiency or better in reading/language arts and mathematics. ● Performance Goal 2: All limited English proficient students will become proficient in English and reach high academic standards, at a minimum attaining proficiency or better in reading/language arts and mathematics. ● Performance Goal 3: By SY 2005-06, all students will be taught by highly qualified teachers. ● Performance Goal 4: All students will be educated in learning environments that are safe, drug free, and conducive to learning. Performance Goal 5: All students will graduate from high school
  6. We’ve talked about the pressures from students and meeting their interests and translating the information to their digital language. Now, another place you’ll feel pressure from is administration and policy makers. You need to meet these standards. Our school’s success depends on it. Some teachers have fallen to this pressure and simply teach to the test and teaching them how to take tests. This isn’t measuring our effectiveness as teachers and this isn’t the intent or purpose of NCLB. We need to increase our effectiveness and how can we do that? By translating our language to meet those of our students. Technology can help us address these problems – and help our students meet these standards by adjusting our methods to meet individual students’ needs.
  7. Individualized LearningStudents learn at their own pace so that they do not have to move onto the next topic without mastering the current topic. Forcing them move onto the next topic will only worsen their academic performance. Customized LearningStudents have a variety of choices that can suit their needs and interests.
