Spring Offensive By David & Lewis.
The Story. The soldiers are resting Resting but knowing that they’re going into war They’re standing watching the wind and natural world - still feeling relaxed Preparing for war and go up to the ridge of grass As they’re going in they ponder over the summer and beauty of their surroundings The cold winds wake them up and prepares them for battle, also there’s no noise. When they reach the top of the hill, they feel exposed and then the light lit up with machine gun fire. Describing the war as like a hell type area The ones that who are rushed in to the battle are out-fiending the enemy. Then they start to retreat
What extreme situations do the soldiers face? They face many extreme situations, some of them being that their in a war and they have to run up the hill to fend off the enemy; “So, soon they topped the hill, and raced together over an open stench of herb and heather exposed” This quote shows us the soldiers all running together, up the hill to fend off the enemy. “ And instantly the whole sky burns,” this quote implies that there in war and this is another extreme example of what soldiers faced.
How do the soldiers and the poet feel? “ And though the summer oozes into their veins,” This quote implies that Owen feels sorry for the soldiers and shows this through the summer. It shows that something as simple as the summer is everything to the soldiers as they have nothing else. “ Knowing their feet had come to the end of the world,” this shows us that the soldiers are feeling almost dead and just cant carry on anymore.
Language Used “ Fearfully Flashed,” Owen uses alliteration here to emphasise the situation the soldiers face. “ Like an injected drug for their bodies’ pains,” This shows that they’re relaxed because they have a break before the next battle.
