Concussions in high school athletes case study presentationctoney
In the Fall of 2014 I worked as as Athletic Training Student with High School athletes. During this time I evaluated a large amount of athletes with head injuries. This intrigued me to go about research on the topic of concussions.
This document discusses concussions, including what they are, their causes and symptoms, treatment, and prevention. A concussion occurs when the brain collides with the skull, causing temporary loss of brain function but not being life-threatening. They are caused by hits to the head and affect thinking, physical, emotional, and sleep functions. High contact sports like football and hockey present greater risk. While not curable, concussions are treated with rest, and multiple concussions increase long term risks like CTE, which can cause depression, dementia and memory loss. Proper safety equipment and guidelines for return to play can help reduce risks.
This document provides an outline for a presentation on concussion in sport. The presentation aims to familiarize practitioners with evaluating and managing concussions, from sideline assessment to return to play protocols. It discusses updated definitions of concussion, signs and symptoms, sideline evaluation tools like SCAT5 and King-Devick testing, and clinical management best practices. The presentation also covers topics like post-concussion syndrome, vestibular rehabilitation, return to learn protocols, and controversial issues like chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
This document discusses concussions in sports. It defines a concussion as a brain injury that can cause headaches or unconsciousness. Concussions are caused by blows to the head from contact with objects or other players. Many sports are discussed where concussions commonly occur, such as football, soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. The document outlines symptoms of concussions and treatments, noting that repeated concussions or failing to treat one properly can lead to serious issues. It seeks to dispel myths about concussions and advocates for education and improved safety equipment to help prevent them.
The document provides advice for avoiding injury in youth sports. It outlines several tips that parents can follow to lessen the frequency and severity of injuries, including encouraging open communication so that kids report any pain, enforcing warm-up routines before practices and games, allowing for adequate rest after activities, ensuring hydration by providing water, and emphasizing proper technique to minimize technical mistakes that could lead to injury.

The document discusses the harmful effects of blue light from screens and recommends using computer gaming glasses that filter out blue light to protect eyes. It reviews 6 top gaming glasses options for blocking blue light while gaming or working, including models from J+S Vision, Gunnar Optiks, Bukos, GAMEKING, Swanwick, and Duco. The benefits of gaming glasses include blocking up to 100% of harmful blue light, increasing contrast, and some include magnification. Not all gaming glasses are the same as dedicated sleeping glasses which typically use amber lenses to block the full light spectrum. Gaming glasses can benefit both gamers and computer users, and clip-on models allow use with prescription glasses.
A concussion is an invisible brain injury caused by a blow to the head that cannot be detected by scans. Symptoms include memory loss, headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Concussions can negatively affect players long after they retire from the sport and frequently lead to long-term health problems. While precautions like improved equipment, rules against blindside hits, and education are in place, concussions remain common due to the physical nature of contact sports and the difficulty of controlling every action that occurs during games.

This document provides information about head and neck injuries, specifically traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). It discusses brain anatomy, types of injuries including concussions, signs and symptoms, prevention strategies, and laws regarding sports injuries. Treatment for TBIs may include medications, surgery, and long-term therapy. Injuries can have damaging effects and affect the whole family. Local resources are available to support recovery. The story of William Dottery, who became paralyzed after a football injury, is shared as an example of recovering from injury through determination and by founding Dream Walkers, a non-profit organization.
The document discusses concussions, including their causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. A concussion is a brain injury that temporarily interferes with brain function and is usually caused by a blow to the head. Symptoms can be physical, like headaches, or mental/mood changes. While most concussions heal with rest, medical advice should be sought if symptoms are prolonged or severe. The standard test to diagnose a concussion is a CT scan of the brain. Treatment focuses on rest, and complications may include prolonged symptoms or increased risk of neurological disorders.
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a blow or hit to the head that causes the brain to move rapidly within the skull. This results in chemical changes in the brain, and symptoms may include headache, dizziness, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. While often called "mild" injuries, concussions are serious and cannot be seen on x-rays or CT scans. Athletes who have previously sustained a concussion are at greater risk for future concussions. Proper diagnosis and a gradual return to activity under medical supervision are important for recovery.
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury caused by a blow or jolt to the head that can have serious short and long-term effects. Symptoms may include headaches, dizziness, confusion, memory problems and more. While loss of consciousness is not required for a concussion, repeated concussions without full recovery in between increases the risk of second impact syndrome, which can be life-threatening. Proper diagnosis and treatment, including complete rest until symptoms resolve, is important for recovery.
To define a traumatic brain injury is simply an injury to the brain due to trauma to the head. A brain bleed, fractured skull, or comas as a result of head injury are brain injuries that are easy to identify. The document discusses concussions, including symptoms, signs, risks of multiple concussions, treatment options, and prevention strategies. It notes that a concussion is a traumatic brain injury caused by a bump or blow to the head that causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull. Repeated concussions increase the risk of long-term brain damage. Proper rest, chiropractic care, physical therapy and following medical guidelines are recommended for treatment and recovery. Wearing protective gear correctly and reporting any head injuries can help prevent concussions during sports.
AET 545 Concussion Tutorial By J. Calhounjackcalhoun77
Each year, millions of students suffer a concussion from a high school sport injury. Many students are not even aware that they are injured. This tutorial was designed to help educate parents and teaches about concussions and the symptoms associated with them. The goal is that if more adults know what to look for, fewer students will suffer from an unreported concussion.
The document discusses concussions in middle and high school athletes. It defines a concussion, symptoms of a concussion, risks of multiple concussions such as second impact syndrome, and long term effects. It emphasizes that concussions must be properly managed, with athletes not returning to play until fully healed to avoid further injury. The document provides information on diagnosing and assessing concussions, as well as return to play protocols.
Mental toughness is the ability to focus in stressful situations. The document provides 8 tips to develop mental toughness: 1) Envision being strong, 2) Keep focus internally on the court, 3) Avoid overthinking, 4) Don't let opponents or crowds sway you, 5) Focus on the positive, 6) Breathe to regain composure, 7) Surround yourself with a supportive environment, and 8) Have fun to reduce anxiety. Most headaches are caused by stress, tension, or poor posture and working positions. Tension headaches account for 90% of headaches and are caused by stress or muscle tension. While headaches are usually nothing serious, they should be evaluated by a doctor if they persist for days or weeks or are accompanied by neck pain. Migraines, which cause recurring headaches, are a neurological disorder diagnosed and treated by a neurologist. In most cases, headaches can be avoided by reducing stress, taking breaks, and maintaining proper ergonomics.
1. Sports injuries can be minor like muscle strains or more major injuries that impact life, mobility or survival.
2. Proper warm-ups, wearing protective gear, avoiding overexertion and rest can help prevent sports injuries.
3. Common sports injuries include strains, sprains, dislocations, concussions and fractures caused by falls, not warming up properly, or exceeding one's abilities. The RICE treatment of rest, ice, compression and elevation can help injuries heal.
The document describes the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 2 (SCAT2), which provides a standardized method for evaluating athletes aged 10 and older who have sustained a concussion. The SCAT2 enables medical professionals to calculate scores for sideline concussion assessment, including the Standardized Assessment of Concussion (SAC) and Maddocks questions. It includes sections to evaluate symptoms, physical signs, balance, coordination, cognitive function, and delayed recall through tests of orientation, immediate and delayed memory.

Sports and Concussions
1. Sports and Concussions
Preventing Concussions in Sports
Start With the Right Equipment
Everyone should wear properly fitting, sport-appropriate headgear and safety equipment when
playing contact sports or biking, rollerblading, skateboarding, snowboarding, or skiing. You can't
prevent every concussion. But helmets, mouthguards, and other safety gear can reduce the risk of a
brain injury.
Play it Safe
Headgear is your first line of defense. But you can still get a concussion because helmets don't stop
injury from happening on the inside. If you hit your head, your brain can still bang against your
skull, even if you're wearing a helmet.
Don't take chances because you think your headgear protects you. This is one reason why there are
rules in sports. Learning the right technique and developing the skill to avoid dangerous plays can
make all kinds of injuries less likely to happen.
When Concussions Happen
If you hurt your head while playing a sport, stop playing immediately. A coach should know to take
you off the field. But if you don't have a coach, or your coach doesn't pull you from play, take
yourself out of the game.
If you're skiing or snowboarding, get the ski patrol to help you down the hill. If you're skateboarding
or biking, stop riding. Don't take a chance on hurting your head again. A second head injury can lead
2. to a condition called second-impact syndrome. Second-impact syndrome doesn't happen very often,
but it can cause lasting brain damage and even death.
If you hurt your head playing organized sports, a coach or athletic trainer may examine you right
after your injury. This is known as sideline testing because it might happen on the sidelines during a
game. Sideline testing is common in schools and sports leagues. By watching you and doing a few
simple tests, a trained person can see if you need medical care.
Lots of schools or sports leagues test players at the start of a sports season to measure their normal
brain function. These tests are called baseline concussion tests. Coaches, trainers, or doctors often
compare these baseline results against sideline tests to see if a player's brain is working OK.
If you were playing a sport and banged your head but didn't do anything about it when it happened,
be alert for signs of a concussion. Concussions don't always show up right away. It can take up to 3
days for signs to become obvious.
See a doctor as soon as you can if think you might have a concussion and develop any of these
problems:
headache
dizziness
feeling sick or throwing up
difficulty with coordination or balance
blurred vision
slurred speech or saying things that don't make sense
3. feeling confused and dazed
difficulty concentrating, thinking, or making decisions
trouble remembering things
feeling sleepy
having trouble falling asleep
sleeping more or less than usual
feeling anxious or irritable for no apparent reason
feeling sad or more emotional than usual
