History of the Summer Olympics
 First modern Olympics was held in Athens, Greece, in 1896.
 240 participants, from 13 nations competing in 43 events.
 Sports included: track and field, gymnastics, swimming,
wrestling and many others.
 James Connolly was the first Olympic champion of the
modern era.
 International multi- sport events, which occurs every four
years.

Structure of the Olympics
 IOC (InternationalOlympic
Committee) governing body
of the Olympics.
 Its main duty is to oversee all
aspects of the Olympic
movement and the act as
supervisors for the Summer
andWinter Olympic Games.
 They are also responsible for
the selecting the host cities
for the games.

International Federations (IFs)
 IF’s are the next level of the
Olympic structure.
 Given the authority by the IOC
to administer specific sports on
the international level.
 Main duty is to determine who
is eligible to compete in that
sport.
 In 1992, the IF (FIBA) allowed
NBA players to compete in the
Olympics for the first time.

National Olympic Committees (NOCs)
 NOC administer Olympic programs for a particular nation.
 United States Olympic Committee (USOC)
 Responsible for all activities related to the Olympics in the
US.
 They also ensure all Olympic actives comply throughout the
country comply with IOC standards.
