Do you like spiders? When you see a spider do you shout, “HELP!” or run away?!
A. Let’s see much you know about spiders. Read the sentences and write true (t) or false(f):
1. Spiders are insects. 2. Spiders have 6 legs.
3. Spiders have long teeth. 4. Spiders eat meat.
5. Spiders can run, jump and fly. 6. All spiders make webs.
7. Tarantulas are enormous spiders. 8. Female black widows eat their babies.
B. Now read the Spiders fact file below and check your answers!
Spiders are ‘arachnids’, not insects.
They are hairy and have 8 legs and 2 body parts.
They have small mouths with big, sharp fangs.
They have ‘spinnerets’ at the back of the body to make
webs.
Spiders eat insects and small animals.
They bite their victims with their fangs and inject
them with poison. The poison turns the insides of their
victims into a kind of soup. The spiders drink the soup.
A spider’s web:
Some spiders, like Orb spiders, spin webs to catch flying insects. They make a new web every
day and eat the old one.
Spider webs are made from spider silk. Liquid silk comes out of the spinnerets. In the air it
goes hard and sticky, like glue. The spiders go up and down and round and round with the silk to
make their webs. Insects fly into the webs and stick there.
Some spiders don’t make webs. Wolf spiders, for example, have long legs to run and catch
caterpillars and beetles. Jumping spiders jump on ants and eat them.
Scary spiders:
Brown recluse spiders live in beds and cupboards.
Their bite is very painful!
Black widow spiders live in North America and
Europe and are very poisonous. The female often
kills the male.
Tarantulas live in South America and Africa and
are bigger than a football! They eat small birds,
frogs, lizards, mice and big beetles.
