2. HISTORY
• Southwest Airlines Co. is a major U.S. airline, the world's largest low-cost
carrier, headquartered in Dallas, Texas.
• The airline was established in 1967 by Herb Kelleher and Rollin King. They
adopted its current name Southwest Airlines in 1971.The airline has more
than 52,000 employees as of July 2016 and operates more than 3,900
departures a day during peak travel season. As of 2014, it carried the most
domestic passengers of any U.S. airline. As of July 2016, Southwest
Airlines has scheduled services to 98 destinations in the United States and
seven additional countries with service to three airports in Cuba expected to
begin later this year, subject to governmental approvals.
• Southwest Airlines has used only Boeing 737s, except for the period from
1979 to 1987 when it leased some Boeing 727s from Braniff International
Airways. As of January 2016, Southwest is the largest operator of
the Boeing 737 worldwide, with over 700 in service, each averaging six
flights per day.

12. Facts About Southwest Airlines
• "Southwest Airlines" wasn't the airline's original name. It was called
"Air Southwest" until 1971.
• They continued their 4-aircraft schedule with only 3 aircraft. The "10
minute turn" was invented to make the schedule work.
• Southwest's only destinations were Dallas, Houston and San Antonio
until 1975.
• Southwest acquired Morris Air in 1992. One of the founders of Morris
Air, David Neeleman, went on to start JetBlue Airways.
• In 1995, Southwest was one of the first airlines to have a website,
called the "Southwest Airlines Home Gate".

• Southwest teamed with Pratt and Whitney in 2008 to develop a
pressure-washing system that allows the airline to clean engine turbine
blades at the gate. The airline estimates they improve fuel efficiency
by 1.9% with the system.
• Southwest is the largest "point to point" operator in the US. Because of
this, approximately 80 percent of their passengers are local, and only
20 percent have a connecting flight.
