The energy-saving concept
Energy management is the process of monitoring, controlling, and
conserving energy in a building or organization; it is the key to saving
energy, to moderate economic risk by reducing your demand for
electricity and make it more predictable commodity

1. Metering and monitoring your energy consumption while
collecting the data.
Energy-data collection is to fit interval-metering systems that
automatically measure and record energy consumption, allowing to
identify personal patterns of power usage that it would be impossible
to see otherwise.
Such load patterns makes it much easier to find the routine waste in
facilities

2. Finding opportunities to save energy and evaluate how much energy
each opportunity could save.
By analyzing the electric load diagrams one can find & quantify routine energy
waste, while investigating the energy savings that could made by replacing equipment
(e.g. lighting, chiller) or by upgrading building's insulation.

patrol the building day and night. Verifying the interval details one can usually identify
what is causing the energy excess.

3. Taking action

FUNDAMENTALS
It requires some appropriate notions:

Smart Meters
Smart meters communicate using wireless signals and
usually involve real-time or near real-time sensors, power
outage notification, allowing interface with EMS / iDR.
It’s an electronic device that records power usage in
intervals (30 min. usually) and communicates the
information back to the utility for billing purposes.

SMART GRID Smart Grid is a modernized electrical grid that uses
last generation communication technology to gather
and act on information, real-time and automated to
improve the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of
production & distribution of electricity.

BUILDING AUTOMATION Building Automation Systems are systems of
computer-aided tools used by operators to centrally
monitor, control, record and improve the performance of
the electrical building loads connected to the control and
scheduling applications (i.e. HAVC, Lighting, etc.).
Alarm management, set-point management, are BMS
applications with the purpose of alarm control &
operator alert to deviations from regular operating
conditions (i.e. temperature, equipment failure, etc.).
The ultimate objective is to prevent and/or minimize, physical and economic loss
through operator intervention in response to the condition that was alarmed.

LOAD CURTAILMENT Load curtailment programs usually involve an
agreement between the utility provider and an electric
power customer that typically agrees to drop the load
off the grid during periods of high power demand in
return for special rates.
Some BAS can also provide applications for this
purpose, transferring loads to the emergency
generator or partially by disconnecting some
equipment and/or reducing operation in a pre-
established criteria

PEAK SHAVING Peak shaving is a technique that is used to reduce
electrical consumption during periods of maximum
demand.
Most peak shaving solutions use generators and
paralleling equipment which allows the emergency
generator to real-time monitor the electric grid.
Peak shedding is commonly utilized to reduce peak
demand penalty that utilities charge for periods of
highest usage. The process starts by disconnecting
sheddable loads (i.e. hvac system, non-sensitive
equipment, some lighting, etc.).

DR is a component of smart
energy demand and categorizes
the process of changing electric
usage by end-use users in
response to electricity costs,
inducing a reduced electric load
profile and peak demand thus a
lower carbon footprint

Coefficient of simultaneity
Coefficient of simultaneity is the property of
two or more events happening at the same
time in a frame of reference.
It refers to the idea that the consumption of power may
occur simultaneously for multiple equipment in the same
period generating a peak demand that can create an
overload or a penalty in contractual power supply

The algorithmic calculations of Terawatt iDR compares every second, real-time, the
power demand and consequently optimizes load by strategically optimizing selected
equipment thus reshaping the instant power and lowering the coefficient of
simultaneity during the in-progress power demand (30 minute period)
The result is a reduced integration value of instant power (kW) therefore generating
a adapted load profile with effective cost reduction in peak demand (kW) and in
consumption (kWh).
