Joshua Hughes enlisted his Titans
teammates in proposing to his
now fiancee Claire Elworthy.

SWANSEA EAST MP Carolyn Harris will
be holding a special surgery at her
Brynhyfryd constituency office on
Saturday between 10.30am and
12.30pm.
Visits will be by appointment only.
Constituents are asked to contact her
office on 01792 462054 or email

register.
SWANSEA Titan Joshua Hughes was
helped by his team-mates when
proposing to Claire Louise Elworthy
after a season-ending win against the
Cardiff Cobras.
American football player Joshua,
aged 23, proposed to girlfriend of three
years Claire, also aged 23, on the field at
Llandarcy after his side beat the Cobras
19-0 to wrap up an undefeated season.
After dating for three years, Joshua,
from Clydach, decided to propose in a
unique fashion and bought 25 jerseys
for his team-mates to spell out the
proposal.
He said: “Football has been such a big
part of my life since starting at
university and I have always had the
idea of proposing on the field.
“We always have a photo at the end of
the season so I put the boys in the
jerseys and had all of the boys face
away.
“I then asked Claire to come and take
a photo of us and had everyone turn
around to show to letters on their
tops.
“She saw it and went ‘Oh no’. I then
said my lines and asked her to marry
me.
“The boys were incredible — they
didn’t know I was going to do it until
after the game.”
Joshua said it was such an important
game he didn’t want to jeopardise the
team’s chances by telling them his
plans, although some coaches knew.
“I was on pins all day and the coaches
were asking me which I was more
nervous about — the game or the
proposal,” he said.
“I was over the moon when she said
yes.
“She said she’d never seen me more
nervous.
“I got down on one knee and said to
her she’s been so amazing in my life and
that there’s no-one I want to spend the
rest of my life with but her.”
The couple met in 2008 while
studying at sixth form.
“I had my eyes on her but she didn’t
want to commit before university, so we
both went away to university single,” he
said.
It was only after Claire thought she
saw Joshua on a night out in 2012 and
sent him a message that things picked
up again.
Joshua said: “It turns out it wasn’t me
she saw but I turned on the charm and
it went from there.
“I have always felt that if you know
that person’s the one and you see a
future you should do it. When we
looked for a house we decided that we
were moving forward with our lives.”
He gave her a £1,200 engagement
ring and the couple are already looking
for wedding venues.
The couple are planning to tie the
knot in August next year.
The Swansea Titans are in division
one of the British Universities American
Football League and have got into the
semi-final of the play-offs.
PRIME Minister David Cameron will
learn about events celebrating Dylan
Thomas and his work this afternoon at a
reception being held in Downing
Street.
Guests from Wales have been invited
to join the St David’s Day reception,
including author and Dylan Thomas
expert Jeff Towns, who said he is keen to
promote various events inspired by the
poet, as well as book selling in Wales.
The former chairman of the Dylan
Thomas Society, who sells books from a
mobile bookstore, is still working with
Swansea University as a patron of the
International Dylan Thomas Prize,
which will be awarded on May 14 —
International Dylan Thomas Day.
That will be marked by a special
Dylan night at Swansea’s Cinema & Co,
and Mr Towns said he was keen to use
the visit to Number 10 to promote them
all.
He said: “I am really curious to go
inside this iconic centre of British
politics and I hope to be able to spread
the word about our mobile bookstore
and our work promoting reading and
books through the words of great Welsh
and Swansea writers — from Dylan
Thomas to Nigel Jenkins and beyond.
And I hope my somewhat Corbyneque
dress sense does not cause offence.”
The Welsh flag is expected to fly
above the famous residence, as it does
annually on St David’s Day.
