South Africa declared itself a republic in 1961 after the 1960 Sharpsville massacre where 70 black protestors were killed. The African National Congress was banned and Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years until being released in 1990. South Africa borders several countries in southern Africa and has a population of over 52 million people who speak 11 official languages. The country has a diverse culture that includes traditional Zulu dances, cuisine, and festivals as well as sports like rugby and soccer that are very popular. Tourism is also a large part of South Africa's economy focused around natural attractions.
