Fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas provide the majority of the world's energy but have disadvantages. Coal, oil, and gas are fossil fuels formed from fossilized prehistoric plants and animals and currently meet around 66% of the world's electricity needs and 95% of total energy demands. While they allow large amounts of electricity to be generated cheaply from one location, burning them produces carbon dioxide that contributes to global warming and the greenhouse effect.
