Local community perceptions of change and climate variability in tropical for...CIFOR-ICRAF
Local communities in Papua, Indonesia were interviewed about their perceptions of climate variability and forest changes. While meteorological data showed relatively minor inter-annual climate variability, communities reported events like extreme heat, strong winds and flash floods in the last 10 years. They adapted to climate events by temporarily relocating or changing crops but did not perceive long-term climate change. Communities saw forests as important for food, shelter and ecosystem services but noted declines due to logging, agriculture and construction rather than climate events. Both local and scientific knowledge provided insights but also had gaps, suggesting future research could better integrate both perspectives.

Thirty-six pili trees were tapped at three lengths (15, 20, 30 cm) and four levels of ethrel (0%, 0.5%, 1.5%, 2.5%). Increasing tapping length and higher ethrel concentration (2.5%) increased resin yield, while rainfall had no significant effect except at 1.5% ethrel and 20-30 cm lengths. Resin yield from trees with ethrel increased by 37.5%, indicating potential for sustainable resin production and additional farmer
Paper industry and deforestation in IndonesiaSergio Baffoni
In order to supply their pulp mills, Indonesian paper companies have resorted to landgrabbing, by obtaining the use of land without the free, prior and informed consent of all affected communities. Despite paper company assurances that they respect local people’s rights, in fact thousands of Indonesian communities are now living beside pulp plantations without having had the opportunity to have their say in how the land should be utilised. Too often they have been deprived of a vital source of food, fibre, medicine, timber, firewood or cash crops. Loss of natural forest also has devastating impacts on wildlife and biodiversity, including endangered species such as the Sumatran tiger, rhinoceros and orang-utan. In addition, timber extraction on Sumatra’s deep peat soils causes alarming levels of carbon emissions.

The document discusses the history and development of Rainforestation Farming in the Philippines as a strategy for corporate social responsibility and reforestation. It began as a collaboration between Visayas State University and GTZ in Germany, and was later adopted by the Philippine DENR. It also outlines issues around land use, intensification of rice production, agriculture in uplands, and the impacts of economic development including deforestation, water pollution, pesticide use, climate change, and child labor. The document advocates strengthening environmental education and recognizes roles of the private sector and policies like the Corporate Social Responsibility Act of 2009 in promoting sustainable development.
The document discusses several major environmental threats facing Indonesia, including deforestation, pollution, and climate change. Deforestation in Indonesia is occurring at an alarming rate of 1-2 million hectares per year to make way for palm oil plantations. This is devastating wildlife habitats and endangered species like orangutans and Sumatran tigers. The widespread fires used to clear land for palm oil are also causing severe smoke and haze pollution across Indonesia and neighboring countries. If deforestation continues at the current pace, the forests of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Sumatra could be completely cleared by 2010.

The document discusses the haze pollution issue in Southeast Asia caused by fires used to clear land for palm oil plantations. It provides the following key points:
1) Last year's haze was particularly bad, affecting many countries in the region, due to a combination of expanding palm oil production, poor agricultural practices like burning, and the El Nino weather pattern.
2) Unsustainable slash-and-burn practices used to clear land for palm oil are the main cause of the haze pollution. Peatland fires are also a major contributor due to carbon-rich peat fueling underground fires.
3) To truly address the problem, all stakeholders - consumers, companies, and governments - need
Responsible Mining by Robert Goodland (March 4, 2012)no2miningph
The document discusses defining responsible mining practices. It argues that mining must become more responsible given the current fragile state of the global environment and populated world. It proposes eight principles for responsible mining, including not damaging communities or life-support systems and prioritizing their protection over mining activities. Some regions are deemed entirely unsuitable for mining, leading some governments to implement mining moratoria. Both government and industry must work to assure responsible mining, though some level of restriction may still be needed.

The document summarizes the devastating floods that occurred in Kerala, India in August 2018. It discusses how unprecedented rainfall led to flooding, landslides and over a million people being displaced. It notes that the situation highlighted how people across different groups in Kerala united to aid rescue efforts. The document also reflects on how unregulated development has contributed to environmental degradation and calls for greater sensitivity to nature. It provides an overview of The Western India Plywoods Ltd and their vision for sustainably using recycled fibers from waste resources to produce fibreboards.
Indonesia has experienced widespread deforestation over the past 50 years, destroying much of its rainforest habitat. This deforestation is driven by illegal logging, corruption, and land conversion for industrial plantations. It accounts for around 6-8% of global greenhouse gas emissions and has made Indonesia the third largest climate polluter. The deforestation threatens many endangered species and negatively impacts local communities that rely on the forest. The document calls on readers to support Rainforest Action Network's campaigns to reduce demand for environmentally destructive palm oil and paper products from Indonesia.

In late 2008, as well as April 2009,
Greenpeace uncovered evidence of
Sinar Mas clearing rainforest for oil palm
plantations in the Lereh region near
Jayapura, the provincial capital of Papua
province.43 This concession is officially
20,535 hectares in size44 and an area
of lowland rainforest.45 At both times,
Greenpeace’s investigation team found
evidence of forest burning to clear land for
oil palm plantations, which is illegal under
Indonesian law.46 These forests contain a
wealth of primary sago and nipah plants.
Sago is a staple food of Papua’s people and
an essential source of daily nutrition, while
nipah is used in home building. Clearing these
forests and with it the necessities of life for
local communities is another tragic impact of
Sinar Mas’ palm oil expansion.
