3. Research
For my Re-review project, I decided upon the topic of political issues posters, more specifically those of the “Stop Asian
Hate” movement. In recent years this movement has become much more prevalent, and as an AAPI (Asian American
Pacific Islander) myself, it is something that I have been following closely. Anti-Asian sentiments have existed in the
United States since the mid-nineteenth century when the first groups of Chinese immigrants arrived. Since then Asians
have been the targets of hatred, violence, and bigotry. Moreover, during times of war, pandemics, and economic
downturns, Asians would often become the scapegoats and take the brunt of the blame. This is once again the case.
Since the appearance of the global COVID-19 pandemic, there has been another significant surge in anti-Asian racism
simply because the virus was first reported in Wuhan, China. In response to this increase in hate crimes, the government
passed the COVID-19 Hat Crimes Act which went into effect on the 20th of May 2021. During that time there were
many different campaigns where people showed their support in whatever ways they could, whether it be through
protesting, spreading awareness, or even through art. Though the act is widely criticized for not addressing the real
issues of systemic discrimination, the idea that so many people came together and supported a cause in their own ways
to make a change is what I hope to recreate with my posters. For me, some of the most important aspects of a political
poster are its ability to reach a wide audience. So for this project, I will be focusing on creating a series of posters that
fulfill many different intents. Those being: to spread awareness, create a sense of community for those affected, and
most importantly to direct individuals to the proper resources.

12. Questions for the Committee
Outside of classes what resources do you recommend I look into in order to
improve my color theory?
How do I incorporate more of my AAPI identity into my work, without it becoming
the sole focus?
