WHAT IS
SONOMA SPLASH?
SONOMA SPLASH IS...
The quintessential childhood moment – a pack of kids on bicycles cruising to the local community
pool, heading to a day of exercise and community-building disguised as fun in the sun.
The classic Olympics montage – early mornings at the training facility, a mother dropping off her
daughter for pre-dawn workouts.
The emotional breakthrough – a special needs adult who has been taking swim lessons all winter
swims his first full lap.
A family coming together – Mom takes Pilates, Dad trains for a triathlon, the third grader takes her
first swim lesson, the 12-year-old goes to baseball practice, and the teenager works her first shift as
a lifeguard. Afterward, they all meet for a picnic lunch by the creek.
Sonoma Splash will make it possible for moments like these and many more to happen every day in
our community. For the first time ever, Sonoma Splash is within reach for the residents of Sonoma
Valley. Dive in, and join us!
Sonoma Splash is a local nonprofit
organization that promotes health
and safety, community, recreation and
sport for all ages. Working together we
are building a vibrant and welcoming
aquatics and health center, providing
a fun and accessible gathering place
for all. Dive in!
“I grew up in a small town in the South, and the city pool
was where the community met. People from all walks
of life, all parts of the community, all backgrounds came
together at the pool.”
–RICHARD HODGES, SONOMA RESIDENT
BUILDING A
COMMUNITY ASSET
SONOMA SPLASH WILL IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND
QUALITY OF LIFE OF ALL RESIDENTS
• The discipline it takes to commit to swimming and to push through tough workouts improves self-esteem,
instills confidence and inspires dedication to taking care of yourself in all facets of life.
• Swimming on a regular basis reduces your chance of premature death by 50%.
• Swimming causes no stress on our joints, and it can reduce pain from osteoarthritis.
• Swimming is recognized as one of the biggest calorie burners around, and great for keeping weight under control.
SONOMA SPLASH WILL IMPROVE OUR LOCAL ECONOMY
BY CREATING JOBS
• An independent analysis conducted by Isaac Sports Group projects that Sonoma Splash would generate $2.5M
in total salary and wages in the first five years of its operation.
• Sonoma Splash will create more than 65 full- and part-time permanent jobs, and will employ 15-25 full-time
workers during the construction phase.
Sonoma Valley is one of the most enviable places to live. However, one thing that
residents have long wished for is a community pool. In 2012, Sonoma Splash hired an
independent research firm to gauge public support for an aquatic center, and to help
guide the site search and facility design. Even in those earliest days of the project,
results were overwhelmingly positive. More than two-thirds of respondents said they want
a pool and would use it.
SONOMA SPLASH WILL BUILD COMMUNITY
• Ideally located in the geographic center of the Valley, across from Maxwell Farms Regional Park, Sonoma Splash
is accessible by car, bike, foot and bus.
• Sonoma Splash will offer a broad array of amenities and activities and will be a vibrant community hub that is
welcoming to all.
SONOMA SPLASH WILL HELP SAVES LIVES
• Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1-14; minorities have a significantly
higher incidence of drowning.
• More than half of Americans either cannot swim or have not perfected five basic safety skills, such as being able
to swim 25 yards; and research shows that if a child doesn't learn to swim by the third grade, he likely never will.
• An average of ten people in the US die from accidental drowning every day. Of these, two are children aged 14
or younger.
“Building an aquatic facility at the 'Paul’s Resort' property
on Verano Avenue benefits the entire Valley. Access to swim
lessons and recreation for youth and families builds on the
community spirit that is alive in Sonoma.”
–DAVE PIER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, SONOMA VALLEY HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

A LASTING LEGACY RIGHT HERE IN SONOMA VALLEY
Sonoma’s long held dream of a community aquatics and recreation center has never been closer to coming true.
Sonoma Splash will have a widespread, positive impact on the lives of residents all across our community. But
as far as we have come as a small circle of committed donors and volunteers, we now must build the momentum
of our campaign by partnering with philanthropic leaders—people just like you—who are rooted in our community
and committed to investing in Sonoma Valley’s future.
Join with other individuals, families and businesses throughout the Valley and beyond, who are helping to make
Sonoma Splash a reality.
We need your generous support in order to ensure that all Sonoma Valley children learn to swim by third grade,
and to provide all residents of Sonoma Valley—regardless of age and income level—access to a welcoming,
community-inspired gathering place for recreation, fitness, celebration and renewal.
