Somerset, Massachusetts borders Mount Hope Bay and Narragansett Bay, with its east border formed by the Taunton River. Originally settled by pilgrims in 1677, Somerset was incorporated as a town in 1790 and used to be a major shipping center due to its access to the Taunton River. It now maintains two large power plants, Somerset Power Plant and Brayton Point Power Station, though pollution from coal combustion, including mercury emissions, has been a concern.
Presentation by Professor Simon Haslett to the Geographical Association at King's College, Taunton, on Tuesday 15th November 2012.
A presentation based on research featured in 'Killer Wave of 1607' as broadcast by BBC2 Timewatch. The flood of that year in the Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary was the worst ever recorded in the British Isles. The area affected stretched from North Devon, through Somerset and Gloucestershire, and along the South Wales coast from Monmouthshire to Carmarthenshire, some 570 km of coast! The coastal population was devastated with at least 2000 fatalities according to one of the contemporary sources. In some parts of the coast the population never recovered from the social and economic disaster. Simon and his co-worker have used documentary and fieldwork evidence to propose a new interpretation of its cause as a tsunami. The BBC produced a follow-up Timewatch programme entitled 'Britain’s Forgotten Floods' that followed Simon around the British coastline examining further evidence for tsunami impact.

The flooding affected over 600 homes, blocked major roads, and prevented farmers from grazing animals or working their farms. Responses included deploying rescue boats, sending in Royal Marines for flood relief, and promising over £30 million for repairs. A 20-year flood action plan was also drafted.

Spanish Prime Minister Rajoy Communicationingenia_pro
The document discusses the communication strategy of Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's government. It argues that Rajoy has adopted the same reactive communication approach that worked while opposing other parties, but is ineffective for governing and addressing crises. Specifically, it notes Rajoy and his team rarely provide narratives or anticipate issues, allowing others to set the agenda. This bunker-like approach leaves Rajoy vulnerable and isolated as circumstances mount. The document calls for Rajoy to take a more active leadership role in communication to regain control of messages.

Due to constant changes and competing priorities, resources are often overcommitted across multiple concurrent projects, causing delays. Customers' needs also frequently change mid-project, placing additional pressure on project managers to deliver on time and within budget.

2. Issue No. 1 Community Profile - Area Summary - Quilt Issued: 9 June 2010
The 36 Community Areas (in rows) and 33 key measures (in columns) together form a broad picture of Somerset and represent the
six aims of the Somerset Sustainable Community Strategy. The Community Areas are illustrated on the map above, and are derived
from clusters of neighbouring wards sharing similar characteristics.
The measures were agreed in consultation with public sector partners, and were selected because the data are available and robust
at the appropriate geographical level and come from reliable sources.
The purpose of this document is to highlight relative strengths and weaknesses within Somerset. The ranking shown gives no
consideration to scoring relative to a regional or national average.
By reading across the row for a specific area, the particular challenges faced by that area are shown by the red blocks and the
strengths by the greens. Grey denotes where the measure was either zero or suppressed because of very small numbers.
