Charles Fritts invented the first working selenium cell in 1883 and installed the world's first rooftop solar array using these cells on a New York City rooftop in 1884, marking the beginnings of solar power innovation. A typical mobile phone charger uses between 0.006 to 0.014 kWh to fully charge a phone, meaning that even charging daily would use only 2-5 kWh per year. Some buses in India have been outfitted with solar chargers to provide power for passengers' mobile devices.
