This document discusses calculating the expected amount of change left over when buying items that cost fractional amounts of a fixed amount of money (N dollars). It finds that the expected change is (0.18)N dollars by dividing the cost range into intervals where a fixed number of items can be purchased, calculating the average change for each interval, and summing these averages. This is equivalent to finding the area under a graph of change versus price from 0 to N.
