2. D E F I N AT I O N
• A soil profile is a vertical cross-
section of the soil, made of layers
running parallel to the surface.
• it is the arrengement of soil particles
in layers.
3. L AY E R S O F S O I L
• Layers of soil are also called as Soil
Horizon.
• There are basically six horizon of
soil.
• O-Horizon
• A-Horizon
• E-Horizon
• B-Horizon
• C-Horizon
• R-Horizon
4.
5. O - H O R I Z O N
• The O horizon is the upper layer of
the topsoil.
• Rich in organic matter like leaf litter
and decomposed plants.
• This horizon of soil is black brown
colour.
6. A - H O R I Z O N
• ‘‘TopSoil’’ or ‘‘Biomental’’ Horizon
• It has the highest construction Of
Organic matter and Microorganisms.
• Biomental-Most Biological Productive
layer; Earthworms,Fungi, and
Bacteria lives in this layer.
7. E - H O R I Z O N
• A leaching zone where minerals and
nutrients are washed downward.
• This layer is composed of nutrients
leached from the O and A horizons.
• This layer is more common in
forested areas and has lower clay
content.
8. B - H O R I Z O N
• This layer is comparatively harder
and more compact than topsoil.
• This layer holds more water than the
topsoil and is lighter brown due to
the presence of clay soil.
• Plants roots can extend into this
layer.
9. C - H O R I Z O N
• ‘‘Regolith’’ Horizon
• The Regolith includes all of the
weathered Material within the profile
and is very Rocky.
• This layer is empty of any organic
matter and is made up of broken
Bedrock.
10. R - H O R I Z O N
• The ‘‘Bedrock’’ Horizon
• Deepest soil horizon in the soil
profile.
• It is compacted and cemented layer.
• Different types of rocks such as
granite basalt and limestone are
found here.
