In regards to discussion posts I generally follow the guidelines
spelled out in Walden's grading rubric in regards to posts (see
the grading rubric outlined in the course information section of
blackboard). However, if you do not use APA format or
references in at least your initial post, I will deduct at least 5
points for that (so please do that). This is also the same rules
for assignments, that they must follow APA style format. Also,
in past courses I have been flexible in certain situations
regarding delayed or late posts. I do believe that life sometimes
gets in the way when we least expect it to. Please know that I
would prefer a late post than no post at all. However, I will not
accept posts that are more than a week late. If you are not able
to post by the required date for whatever reason, just please let
me know beforehand. As a rule, however, I do deduct points off
the posts if they are late so as to be fair to those who post on
time.
In addition, I will be following very closely with
Walden's Tunitin Policy, which I posted below. Therefore, any
paper that is submitted to me with more than 30% of the paper
with improperly cited passages (or to many cited passages) I
will return the paper to you and ask for you to re-review it and
for a re-write if necessary. You will not lose points if the
original paper was submitted on-time, but will be given a
limited period of time to review/rewrite the paper (2-3 days).
I have provided an outline of what is specifically required for
discussion posts and written assignments in this course:
Discussion Posts:
All posts to all discussions require APA citations and
references. Each student is to respond to 2 other students’ posts
for every discussion throughout the course. This is the rule for
this class; there are discrepancies in this on the Blackboard site.
However, going forward, If you post more than 6 response
posts by day 5 you will be eligible for 3 points extra
participation credit to make up for any lost points (my class
rule).
I will be posting on discussions and I am requiring a response
from you so please check throughout the week for when respond
to your discussion post (usually by day 5)
All initial posts and response posts are due on the days
specified on Blackboard (usually Day Three and Five). If your
post is late for whatever reason please make sure your posts are
posted by Day 7. I am no longer allowed to accept posts after
Day 7 as per Walden’s Policy, and any posts. If you know that
there is a circumstance that will prevent you for making the post
on time or by Day 7, please email me to discuss.
The way a reader (myself and other students) can see that you
understand the information, theoretical models, concepts, and
words you are discussing is to write about them in your own
words as much as possible, tell us what the article authors said
by paraphrasing, using your own language. Scholarly does not
mean you have to write using multi-syllabic words. Writing a
bit like you talk is fine if the reader can understand and if your
spelling and grammar are correct.
Read the rubric before and while you write. Let it guide you as
to what you write. This is straightforward. In discussion posts
you can draft a post in a word document where you have pasted
the instructions for each point to be made in the post. You can
then write your answer/post right under this instruction and
copy and paste the whole thing onto the discussion list. This can
help you stay on track.
The idea in discussions is to have as much of a conversation as
possible. Notice that the “feedback” rubric score for “excellent”
says: RESPONSES --if you fail to respond at all, the grade for
feedback is 0 out of 10 points. This does not even consider
quality of posts, doing nothing causes a loss of 10 points
CITATIONS AND REFERENCES: Initial posts and the 2
required responses must have citations and references from the
professional literature. Using only the case as a reference/cite
is NOT sufficient. This is a vignette, it is not research that will
back up a claim. Every post should have a claim you are
making (e.g. "I think an eco map is good to use here",
"Strengths based is best here", "Women in violent relationships
often attempt to leave 9 times before leaving for good). You
then must have a cite/ref. that backs up this claim, e.g. an
article that states eco maps are good to use in situations similar
to the case under discussion.
Written Assignments:
Walden University has a strict policy on written assignments,
whereas all papers are required to follow APA format. The only
exception is that they no longer require a running head on the
papers. Most of you already adhere to this format and I have
not been as strict in my grading when reviewing your papers on
this, but going forward (Week 7 and beyond) I will now follow
closely to Walden University requirements and the rubric. The
outline for an APA paper is below, and I have attached a sample
for your review.
In addition, as I mentioned in my introductory post at the
beginning of the quarter. following very closely with
Walden's Tunitin Policy, which I posted below. Therefore, any
paper that is submitted to me with more than 30% of the paper
with improperly cited passages (or too many cited passages) I
will return the paper to you and ask for you to re-review it and
for a re-write if necessary. You will not lose points if the
original paper was submitted on-time, but will be given a
limited period of time to review/rewrite the paper (2-3 days).
Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.

APA Format Outline: In general, your paper should follow
these formatting guidelines:
Margin. Although formerly, the required measurement for
margins is 1 ½ inch, now, it is required that margins on all sides
(top, bottom, left, right) should each just measure one (1) inch.
Font Size and Type. Font for text all throughout the paper
should be 12-pt., Times New Roman.
Spacing. Double-space for the whole document, including
appendices, footnotes, tables and figures. For spacing after
punctuation, space once after commas, colons and semicolons
within sentences and space twice after punctuation marks that
end sentences.
Text Alignment and Indentation. Alignment should be flush left,
or aligned to the left creating uneven right margin.
Active Voice. Traditionally, the APA writing format requires
writing in an impersonal form. That is, refraining from using
pronouns such as ‘I' or ‘We' in your statements. Now, it has
changed. Most disciplines require the active voice. An example
of this would be, instead of writing “according to the study,” it
should be “according to our study.” This way, papers are made
to be as active as possible.
Order of Pages and Pagination. The order of pages should
follow this format:
Title Page > Abstract > Body > References > Appendices >
Footnotes > Tables > Figures
The page number should appear one inch from the right corner
of the paper on the first line of each page. The title page will
serve as the Page 1 of your paper.
Title Page
The Title Page should contain the title of your paper, your name
as its author (including co-authors), your institutional
affiliation/s and author note if applicable. In case there's no
institutional affiliation, just indicate your city and state or your
city and country instead.
As mentioned earlier, your title page will serve as your Page 1.
It should be typed centered on the page. If it requires more than
one line, please be reminded to double-space between all lines.
Your name appears double-spaced as well, below the paper title.
The author note is where information about the author's
departmental affiliation is stated, or acknowledgements of
assistance or financial support are made, as well as the mailing
address for future correspondence.
Abstract
The Abstract of your paper contains a brief summary of the
entirety of your research paper. It usually consists of just 150-
250 words, typed in block format. The Abstract begins on a new
page, Page 2. All numbers in your Abstract should be typed as
digits rather than words, except those that begin a sentence.
Body
The body of your research paper begins on a new page, Page 3.
The whole text should be typed flush-left with each paragraph's
first line indented 5-7 spaces from the left. Also, avoid
hyphenating words at ends of line.
Text Citation and References
Text Citations are important to avoid issues of plagiarism.
When documenting source materials, the author/s and date/s of
the sources should be cited within the body of the paper. The
main principle here is that, all ideas and words of others should
be properly and formally acknowledged.
The Reference Section lists all the sources you've previously
cited in the body of your research paper. It states the author/s of
the source, the material's year of publication, the name or title
of the source material, as well as its electronic retrieval
information, if these were gathered from the Internet.
Appendices
The Appendix is where unpublished tests or other descriptions
of complex equipment or stimulus materials are presented.

Many people believe that culture only includes people of
different races and religion but it isn’t. According to
Zimmermann, “Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a
particular group of people, defined by everything from
language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts.” An
outsider may not know that am part of the vegan culture. For
those that are unfamiliar with vegan culture (not to be confused
with vegetarian culture), veganism is currently defined as a way
of living that attempts to exclude all forms of animal
exploitation and cruelty, be it for food, clothing or any other
purpose. A social worker would need to know this in the event
that they come to my home to provide social services and they
are wearing a type of animal skin or fur. My family would feel
offended and thus make the interaction with the social worker
an uncomfortable one. Or if I was to meet with my social
worker over lunch/dinner and they suggest a BBQ/steakhouse
restaurant.
Cultural competence allows social workers to feel comfortable
and be effective in their interactions with families whose
cultures are different from their own. It enables families to feel
good about their interactions with their social worker, and it
allows the two parties to accomplish their goals (Brislin,
Cushner, Cherrie, & Young, 1986). Social workers will have
trouble connecting with their clients without cultural
competence and providing the assistance that they seek. It does
not help a client when a social worker views his or her
own world view as correct and the client's view as problematic
or pathological. Helping the client "give up" those aspects of
cultural heritage that cause anxiety in the worker can hurt the
client

Understanding the culture and the background of a client is a
necessity in establishing assistance for them. Not only is their
culture important but also the geographic location and the
environment in which they live plays an important role in their
behavior and views on life. To describe my culture is a little
challenging because of the geographic location in which I was
raised. The origin of my sir name is Irish however, my culture
is primarily Hispanic. When people see or hear my name before
they actually meet me they assume I am light complected with
possibly red hair and light eyes. It never fails that after people
get to know me they ask, "So how did you get the name
Mc Guire?". I then explain that possibly either my great
grandfather or great great grandfather was Irish but married my
grandmother from Mexico and their children had more Mexican
to Mexican relations. The important aspects of my culture as
Hispanic centers around my family and my religion (Roman
Catholic). My life's decisions, morals, and values are governed
by these cultural aspects. As a Hispanic I am driven to work
extremely hard to provide for my family. Now I do not
believe in that male machismo where the Husband/Father is
complete and absolute ruler of his family. That is one area in
which I alter my cultural beliefs. I believe in providing for my
family so that my children will have a better life than my wife
and I have. I believe in providing for them before myself and
fulfilling their needs before mine. I believe in showing and
earning respect and that to be disrespectful to woman or elders
is not acceptable. I believe in protecting my family at all costs
even if it means disowning or separating myself from
other family members. This belief falls into line with what is
written in the Bible where a man will take his wife and leave his
father and mother. I believe I am the example and role model
for my son on how to be a man, father, and husband. I am also
the role model for my daughters on what they should expect
from their husband and the father of their children. It would be
extremely important for a social worker to know these aspects
of my life in order to earn my trust and belief that they can
provide assistance for me.

Charo is a 34 year old, heterosexual, Hispanic female. One
cultural characteristic I am familiar with is the importance of
family, and feelings of loyalty to one’s family. Machismo is a
term used to describe the belief that men are to be providers and
it is their duty to keep families safe (Comas-Díaz, 1995). This
would explain Charo’s dependency on her abusive husband.
Charo came to the U.S. 8 years ago with her husband. This
would be the second familiar cultural characteristic; the Latino
culture having stress related trauma separating from her
extended family. Also, U.S. immigration policies and practices
may be intimidating, unwelcoming, and even violent (Gutierrez
et al., 2000); this may lead to a generalized fear or distrust of
social services. Frequently, when immigrants arrive in a new
country, they live in an ethnically homogenous neighborhood
with people from their same cultural group.
Additional information I would need from Charo are:
1. How does her culture perceive mental illness? Are there
restrictions to care in the Latino culture? (There may be
restrictions to medications that can be prescribed for Charo and
her family. The abusive husband was reported to have an
imaginary friend telling him to kill Charo. This may be a gentic
mental disorder that could possibly be passed down to Charo’s
children.)
2. Was the immigration voluntary or involuntary?

I have chosen the case of Charo who is a heterosexual Hispanic
female. Charo is 34 years old and came to the U.S 8 years ago
with her husband. One cultural characteristic I have found
familiar is that the loyalty to one's family is very
important.Even though most women in my family are taught to
care of themselves men are known to be the providers, to take
care of their families, and to provide protection while the
women usually take of the children, household, and distribution
of the money. (Comas- Díaz, 1995). This could explain why
Charo was so hesitant to leave her abusive husband because of
the cultural she was so common to. Another familiar cultural
characteristic would be stress or depression from being away
from her family back in her original home. Being in a new place
for the first time escpically in an unknown place where you do
not know anybody or dont have that strong support of family to
back you up can be tough. With the policies of immigration in
today's time I suspect her experience was unwelcoming and
maybe even terrifying.
Additional Information Needed:
1.Did she had any input about the move to the U.S or was it by
force? Maybe provide actual dates when they came over and a
copy of any papers they had to file or sign.
2. Is there any past medical history of mental illness in her
husband's family?( Noting the imaginary friend) Was he
bothered by or stressed about work? Was he consuming any type
of alcohol or prescription pills that could cause him to act the
way he did?
3. An account of how they first met and when did she began to
notice him changing and what do she think could've affected it?

The community that I chose for this discussion is a block from
my home. The population is predominantly black even though
there are a few white families scattered throughout. I believe
this area is below the poverty line. The pictures that are
attached are the main businesses in the area, there are no people
in the pictures because when people do show up in this area
they are mostly children or teenagers. The one businesses called
“The Spot”, is a typical hangout for these young people. Since
coming to Baltimore even during the winter, I have seen youth
at this business as late as 1100 hours. On most nights there is a
police car stationed in the parking area because this is a known
drug spot. I have often asked my father why he still lives here
because there has not been a night since coming here that we do
not hear gunfire. Two blocks over is a 7/11 that I will not let
my wife go to alone because the young men who hang around
there are extremely rude. We had to learn to stop given people
change when we come out the store because it seems like this is
their job, to beg people for change in order to walk across the
road and buy drugs from young men some no older than 15 or
16.
Regardless of all this, I see the strength of this community
being the youth. There are so many kids up and down the street,
playing dice or play boxing. During my criminal justice degree
there was a lot of focus on community policing but was left out
was how to use youth as an asset rather than a threat. By
treating the young exclusively as threats to public order, the
state creates and reinforces attitudes of hostility and opposition
(Foreman, 2005, p.2). Even though there are some youth that are
selling drugs and skipping school, I believe there are more who
are just trying to find some type of activity during the day and
attends school on a regular. These are the strength of the
community that I would try to reach. It might be late for some
of the older youth but by working with the police and school
system we could concentrate on youth in the community. The
text explains that “client systems have a right and obligation to
be part of the change to their system (Kirst-Ashman, & Hull,
2014, p.203), that is why parents and adults in the community
along with the police and schools play a vital role. I believe if
we can start changing the mindset of the youth early we will see
a change in the communities, even the one like I have described.

I chose to visit the city of Bankhead in Atlanta. The population
is predominantly black, but there are other races also (“Current
Atlanta Demographics”, n.d.). Compared to other developed
cities, I noticed there were not that many businesses around.
There are mostly convenience stores, liquor stores, fast food
restaurants, and car repair shops. Besides the new buildings,
most of the existing buildings look very rundown and in need of
maintenance. According to the Georgia Crime Statistics, crime
around this community is above average (n.d.). Usually you will
find groups of people hanging around convenience stores and
abandoned buildings where most of the time drugs are being
sold.
In order to help this community, I would have to work with the
city of Atlanta. I would contact the city council in order for
changes to be made. According to Kirst-Ashman et al., social
workers want to influence those who make the final decision,
especially when that decision has a major impact on our clients
(2014). I believe building more parks and having more
businesses around the area would strengthen this community.
Businesses will bring more jobs and people won’t have to sell
drugs to earn an income. Also having parks in this community
will give people a place to hang out instead of hanging around
businesses. I feel as if crime would decrease because people
wouldn’t be idle and would use their energy towards something
else.

Those pictures memories, out of my 23 years of
service, half was spent in Lawton/Ft. Sill. Being in the military,
I can honestly say Lawton was one of the best places I was
stationed as far as race relations. I never had any issues with
discrimination on or off base. Ft. Drum, New York or
Watertown is another story. Do not get me wrong I know there
is racism in almost all parts of America, Lawton not excluded. I
just believe that because these cities are built around bases,
they tend to have a little more tolerance because most of the
town people are ex-military. In the book; A Nation Divided:
Diversity, Inequality, and Community in American
Society(1999) they write about how on and off duty there is
more interracial mingling among Soldiers than there is with
their civilian counterparts (Moen, Dempster-McClain & Walker,
1999, p. 190). Before joining the military I did not
associate with any other race than black, that is how it was in
my town, today I could not imagine not having some of the
lifelong friends I have made off all races.

SOCW 6002 week your primary post listed a reference but no intex.docx

  • 1. SOCW 6002 week your primary post listed a reference but no intext citations were listed throughout your post. What is the reference list referring to in your writing? In addition your peer posts were not according to APA format. All posts should be APA. Please make sure your writing is scholarly and is supported by your references Good effort however I am concerned that your primary post listed a reference but no intext citations were listed throughout your post. What is the reference list referring to in your writing? In addition your peer posts were not according to APA format. All posts should be APA. Please make sure your writing is scholarly and is supported by your references. when using the APA format . For example, all titles (books, articles, reports are written in italics Special instructions: Please need in APA format style need citations , treat each work as a separately work and each work needs a separately references, please title the work as follow by SOCW 6200 or 6351, by discussion #, week #, nameof student. : example SOCW 6002, discussion # , week #, name of student SOCW 6101, discussion #, week # , name of student In regards to discussion posts I generally follow the guidelines spelled out in Walden's grading rubric in regards to posts (see the grading rubric outlined in the course information section of blackboard). However, if you do not use APA format or references in at least your initial post, I will deduct at least 5 points for that (so please do that). This is also the same rules for assignments, that they must follow APA style format. Also, in past courses I have been flexible in certain situations regarding delayed or late posts. I do believe that life sometimes gets in the way when we least expect it to. Please know that I

If you are not able to post by the required date for whatever reason, just please let me know beforehand. As a rule, however, I do deduct points off the posts if they are late so as to be fair to those who post on time. In addition, I will be following very closely with Walden's Tunitin Policy, which I posted below. Therefore, any paper that is submitted to me with more than 30% of the paper with improperly cited passages (or to many cited passages) I will return the paper to you and ask for you to re-review it and for a re-write if necessary. You will not lose points if the original paper was submitted on-time, but will be given a limited period of time to review/rewrite the paper (2-3 days). I have provided an outline of what is specifically required for discussion posts and written assignments in this course: Discussion Posts: All posts to all discussions require APA citations and references. Each student is to respond to 2 other students’ posts for every discussion throughout the course. This is the rule for this class; there are discrepancies in this on the Blackboard site. However, going forward, If you post more than 6 response posts by day 5 you will be eligible for 3 points extra participation credit to make up for any lost points (my class rule). I will be posting on discussions and I am requiring a response from you so please check throughout the week for when respond to your discussion post (usually by day 5) All initial posts and response posts are due on the days specified on Blackboard (usually Day Three and Five). If your post is late for whatever reason please make sure your posts are posted by Day 7. I am no longer allowed to accept posts after Day 7 as per Walden’s Policy, and any posts. If you know that there is a circumstance that will prevent you for making the post
  • 3. on time or by Day 7, please email me to discuss. The way a reader (myself and other students) can see that you understand the information, theoretical models, concepts, and words you are discussing is to write about them in your own words as much as possible, tell us what the article authors said by paraphrasing, using your own language. Scholarly does not mean you have to write using multi-syllabic words. Writing a bit like you talk is fine if the reader can understand and if your spelling and grammar are correct. Read the rubric before and while you write. Let it guide you as to what you write. This is straightforward. In discussion posts you can draft a post in a word document where you have pasted the instructions for each point to be made in the post. You can then write your answer/post right under this instruction and copy and paste the whole thing onto the discussion list. This can help you stay on track. The idea in discussions is to have as much of a conversation as possible. Notice that the “feedback” rubric score for “excellent” says: RESPONSES --if you fail to respond at all, the grade for feedback is 0 out of 10 points. This does not even consider quality of posts, doing nothing causes a loss of 10 points CITATIONS AND REFERENCES: Initial posts and the 2 required responses must have citations and references from the professional literature. Using only the case as a reference/cite is NOT sufficient. This is a vignette, it is not research that will back up a claim. Every post should have a claim you are making (e.g. "I think an eco map is good to use here", "Strengths based is best here", "Women in violent relationships often attempt to leave 9 times before leaving for good). You then must have a cite/ref. that backs up this claim, e.g. an article that states eco maps are good to use in situations similar to the case under discussion. Written Assignments: Walden University has a strict policy on written assignments, whereas all papers are required to follow APA format. The only
  • 4. exception is that they no longer require a running head on the papers. Most of you already adhere to this format and I have not been as strict in my grading when reviewing your papers on this, but going forward (Week 7 and beyond) I will now follow closely to Walden University requirements and the rubric. The outline for an APA paper is below, and I have attached a sample for your review. In addition, as I mentioned in my introductory post at the beginning of the quarter. following very closely with Walden's Tunitin Policy, which I posted below. Therefore, any paper that is submitted to me with more than 30% of the paper with improperly cited passages (or too many cited passages) I will return the paper to you and ask for you to re-review it and for a re-write if necessary. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. Dr. Regina APA Format Outline: In general, your paper should follow these formatting guidelines: Margin. Although formerly, the required measurement for margins is 1 ½ inch, now, it is required that margins on all sides (top, bottom, left, right) should each just measure one (1) inch. Font Size and Type. Font for text all throughout the paper should be 12-pt., Times New Roman. Spacing. Double-space for the whole document, including appendices, footnotes, tables and figures. For spacing after punctuation, space once after commas, colons and semicolons within sentences and space twice after punctuation marks that end sentences. Text Alignment and Indentation. Alignment should be flush left, or aligned to the left creating uneven right margin. Active Voice. Traditionally, the APA writing format requires
  • 5. writing in an impersonal form. That is, refraining from using pronouns such as ‘I' or ‘We' in your statements. Now, it has changed. Most disciplines require the active voice. An example of this would be, instead of writing “according to the study,” it should be “according to our study.” This way, papers are made to be as active as possible. Order of Pages and Pagination. The order of pages should follow this format: Title Page > Abstract > Body > References > Appendices > Footnotes > Tables > Figures The page number should appear one inch from the right corner of the paper on the first line of each page. The title page will serve as the Page 1 of your paper. Title Page The Title Page should contain the title of your paper, your name as its author (including co-authors), your institutional affiliation/s and author note if applicable. In case there's no institutional affiliation, just indicate your city and state or your city and country instead. As mentioned earlier, your title page will serve as your Page 1. It should be typed centered on the page. If it requires more than one line, please be reminded to double-space between all lines. Your name appears double-spaced as well, below the paper title. The author note is where information about the author's departmental affiliation is stated, or acknowledgements of assistance or financial support are made, as well as the mailing address for future correspondence. Abstract The Abstract of your paper contains a brief summary of the entirety of your research paper. It usually consists of just 150- 250 words, typed in block format. The Abstract begins on a new page, Page 2. All numbers in your Abstract should be typed as digits rather than words, except those that begin a sentence. Body The body of your research paper begins on a new page, Page 3. The whole text should be typed flush-left with each paragraph's
  • 6. first line indented 5-7 spaces from the left. Also, avoid hyphenating words at ends of line. Text Citation and References Text Citations are important to avoid issues of plagiarism. When documenting source materials, the author/s and date/s of the sources should be cited within the body of the paper. The main principle here is that, all ideas and words of others should be properly and formally acknowledged. The Reference Section lists all the sources you've previously cited in the body of your research paper. It states the author/s of the source, the material's year of publication, the name or title of the source material, as well as its electronic retrieval information, if these were gathered from the Internet. Appendices The Appendix is where unpublished tests or other descriptions of complex equipment or stimulus materials are presented. apaformat.pdf Discussion 1 week 5 Respond by Day 5 to at least two colleagues’ posts by asking a follow-up question to help you learn more about your colleague’s culture. 1. A social worker would need to know this in the event that they come to my home to provide social services and they are wearing a type of animal skin or fur. My family would feel offended and thus make the interaction with the social worker an uncomfortable one. Or if I was to meet with my social worker over lunch/dinner and they suggest a BBQ/steakhouse restaurant. Cultural competence allows social workers to feel comfortable and be effective in their interactions with families whose cultures are different from their own. It enables families to feel good about their interactions with their social worker, and it allows the two parties to accomplish their goals (Brislin, Cushner, Cherrie, & Young, 1986). Social workers will have trouble connecting with their clients without cultural competence and providing the assistance that they seek. It does not help a client when a social worker views his or her own world view as correct and the client's view as problematic or pathological. Helping the client "give up" those aspects of cultural heritage that cause anxiety in the worker can hurt the client References Brislin, R., Cushner, K., Cherrie, C. & Young, M. (1986). • 8. Top of Form Total views: 15 (Your views: 1) Understanding the culture and the background of a client is a necessity in establishing assistance for them. Not only is their culture important but also the geographic location and the environment in which they live plays an important role in their behavior and views on life. To describe my culture is a little challenging because of the geographic location in which I was raised. The origin of my sir name is Irish however, my culture is primarily Hispanic. When people see or hear my name before they actually meet me they assume I am light complected with possibly red hair and light eyes. It never fails that after people get to know me they ask, "So how did you get the name Mc Guire?". I then explain that possibly either my great grandfather or great great grandfather was Irish but married my grandmother from Mexico and their children had more Mexican to Mexican relations. The important aspects of my culture as Hispanic centers around my family and my religion (Roman Catholic). My life's decisions, morals, and values are governed by these cultural aspects. As a Hispanic I am driven to work extremely hard to provide for my family. Now I do not believe in that male machismo where the Husband/Father is complete and absolute ruler of his family. That is one area in which I alter my cultural beliefs. I believe in providing for my family so that my children will have a better life than my wife and I have. I believe in providing for them before myself and fulfilling their needs before mine. I believe in showing and earning respect and that to be disrespectful to woman or elders is not acceptable. I believe in protecting my family at all costs even if it means disowning or separating myself from other family members. This belief falls into line with what is written in the Bible where a man will take his wife and leave his father and mother. I believe I am the example and role model for my son on how to be a man, father, and husband. I am also the role model for my daughters on what they should expect

It would be extremely important for a social worker to know these aspects of my life in order to earn my trust and belief that they can provide assistance for me. V/R Alfred A. Jameea Boykin RE: Discussion 2 - Week 5 Collapse Top of Form Total views: 11 (Your views: 1) Charo is a 34 year old, heterosexual, Hispanic female. One cultural characteristic I am familiar with is the importance of family, and feelings of loyalty to one’s family. Machismo is a term used to describe the belief that men are to be providers and it is their duty to keep families safe (Comas-Díaz, 1995). This would explain Charo’s dependency on her abusive husband. Charo came to the U.S. 8 years ago with her husband. This would be the second familiar cultural characteristic; the Latino culture having stress related trauma separating from her extended family. Also, U.S. immigration policies and practices may be intimidating, unwelcoming, and even violent (Gutierrez et al., 2000); this may lead to a generalized fear or distrust of social services. Frequently, when immigrants arrive in a new country, they live in an ethnically homogenous neighborhood with people from their same cultural group.
  • 10. Additional information I would need from Charo are: 1. How does her culture perceive mental illness? Are there restrictions to care in the Latino culture? (There may be restrictions to medications that can be prescribed for Charo and her family. The abusive husband was reported to have an imaginary friend telling him to kill Charo. This may be a gentic mental disorder that could possibly be passed down to Charo’s children.) 2. Was the immigration voluntary or involuntary? References Comas-Díaz, L. (1995). One cultural characteristic I have found familiar is that the loyalty to one's family is very important.Even though most women in my family are taught to care of themselves men are known to be the providers, to take care of their families, and to provide protection while the women usually take of the children, household, and distribution of the money. (Comas- Díaz, 1995). This could explain why Charo was so hesitant to leave her abusive husband because of
  • 11. the cultural she was so common to. Another familiar cultural characteristic would be stress or depression from being away from her family back in her original home. Being in a new place for the first time escpically in an unknown place where you do not know anybody or dont have that strong support of family to back you up can be tough. With the policies of immigration in today's time I suspect her experience was unwelcoming and maybe even terrifying. Additional Information Needed: 1.Did she had any input about the move to the U.S or was it by force? Maybe provide actual dates when they came over and a copy of any papers they had to file or sign. 2. Is there any past medical history of mental illness in her husband's family?( Noting the imaginary friend) Was he bothered by or stressed about work? Was he consuming any type of alcohol or prescription pills that could cause him to act the way he did? 3. • 12. a strength for the community your colleague described. 5. Joey Wallace RE: Discussion - Week 5 Collapse Top of Form Total views: 8 (Your views: 3) The community that I chose for this discussion is a block from my home. The population is predominantly black even though there are a few white families scattered throughout. I believe this area is below the poverty line. The pictures that are attached are the main businesses in the area, there are no people in the pictures because when people do show up in this area they are mostly children or teenagers. The one businesses called “The Spot”, is a typical hangout for these young people. Since coming to Baltimore even during the winter, I have seen youth at this business as late as 1100 hours. On most nights there is a police car stationed in the parking area because this is a known drug spot. I have often asked my father why he still lives here because there has not been a night since coming here that we do not hear gunfire. Two blocks over is a 7/11 that I will not let my wife go to alone because the young men who hang around there are extremely rude. We had to learn to stop given people change when we come out the store because it seems like this is their job, to beg people for change in order to walk across the road and buy drugs from young men some no older than 15 or 16. Regardless of all this, I see the strength of this community being the youth. There are so many kids up and down the street, playing dice or play boxing. During my criminal justice degree there was a lot of focus on community policing but was left out was how to use youth as an asset rather than a threat. By treating the young exclusively as threats to public order, the state creates and reinforces attitudes of hostility and opposition (Foreman, 2005, p.2). Even though there are some youth that are
  • 13. selling drugs and skipping school, I believe there are more who are just trying to find some type of activity during the day and attends school on a regular. These are the strength of the community that I would try to reach. It might be late for some of the older youth but by working with the police and school system we could concentrate on youth in the community. The text explains that “client systems have a right and obligation to be part of the change to their system (Kirst-Ashman, & Hull, 2014, p.203), that is why parents and adults in the community along with the police and schools play a vital role. I believe if we can start changing the mindset of the youth early we will see a change in the communities, even the one like I have described. Foreman, J. (2005) Community Policing and Youth as Assets. Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology, 95(1), 1-18. Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hull, G. H., Jr. (2014). Understanding generalist practice (7th Ed.). 6. Lilian Karanja RE: Discussion - Week 5 Collapse Top of Form Total views: 12 (Your views: 1) I chose to visit the city of Bankhead in Atlanta. The population is predominantly black, but there are other races also (“Current Atlanta Demographics”, n.d.). Compared to other developed cities, I noticed there were not that many businesses around. There are mostly convenience stores, liquor stores, fast food restaurants, and car repair shops. Besides the new buildings, most of the existing buildings look very rundown and in need of maintenance. According to the Georgia Crime Statistics, crime around this community is above average (n.d.). Usually you will find groups of people hanging around convenience stores and abandoned buildings where most of the time drugs are being

According to Kirst-Ashman et al., social workers want to influence those who make the final decision, especially when that decision has a major impact on our clients (2014). I believe building more parks and having more businesses around the area would strengthen this community. Businesses will bring more jobs and people won’t have to sell drugs to earn an income. Also having parks in this community will give people a place to hang out instead of hanging around businesses. I feel as if crime would decrease because people wouldn’t be idle and would use their energy towards something else. Being in the military, I can honestly say Lawton was one of the best places I was stationed as far as race relations. I never had any issues with discrimination on or off base. Ft. Drum, New York or Watertown is another story. Do not get me wrong I know there is racism in almost all parts of America, Lawton not excluded. I just believe that because these cities are built around bases, they tend to have a little more tolerance because most of the town people are ex-military. In the book; A Nation Divided: Diversity, Inequality, and Community in American Society(1999) they write about how on and off duty there is more interracial mingling among Soldiers than there is with their civilian counterparts (Moen, Dempster-McClain & Walker, 1999, p. 190). Before joining the military I did not associate with any other race than black, that is how it was in my town, today I could not imagine not having some of the lifelong friends I have made off all races.
