Religija kao elemenat kulture, ili bolje rečeno jedna od bitnih ljudskih
tvorevina (jezik, mitovi i religija, saznanje-filozofija i nauka, umetnost, običaji i
moral).
Za determinisanje veze kulture i religije potrebno je ranije objasniti obim
i sadržaj termina religija jer gotovo da nema spora da religija čini segment
kulture.
W. King nas upozorava da sam pokušaj definisanja religije i nalaženja
njenog mesta unutar neke šire celine, jeste jedan kulturno pristrasan zadatak
kakav se ne bi mogao zamisliti u orijentalnim kulturama: «Taj pokušaj je
prirodna posledica zapadnih, spekulativnih, intelektualističkih i naučnih
sklonosti» - dakako, po njemu ta naša sklonost upravo proističe iz religijske
tradicije zapada koja razlikuje teističko kao transcendentalno bogatstvo od svega
ostalog»2
Naravno istraživanje religije u okvirima nauke počelo je pitanjem
porekla i razvoja religije (Genetička teorija), i to pod snažnim uticajem
evolucione paradigme koja je prevladavala u drugoj polovini XIX v., naročito
nakon objavljivanja Darvinovog dela «O poreklu vrste». Prema ocenama nekih
autora, svi pokušaji da se utvrde izvori i počeci religije nisu uspeli, stoga se
pitanje o izvoru religije danas smatra prevaziđenim pošto je nemoguće na njega
jednoznačno odgovoriti. Dok su klasične evolucionističke ideje o prapočetku i
jednouniskom razvoju religije naišle na kritike u okvirima difuzionizma
funkcionalizma i strukturalizma.

2. U oblasti sociologije i antropologije ogroman značaj ima Dikremov
pokušaj, mada je on na neki način skrenuo nauku sa pravog puta, no sociolozi i
drugi istraživači toga dugo nisu bili svesni.
U svom delu «Elementarni oblici verskog života» Dikrem započinje
opisom religijskog života prvenstveno razlikujući sakralno i profano, a poslije
dolazi do funkcionalnog objašnjenja religije kao integracijske snage društva. Na
drugoj strani, religija je najmoćnija društvena činjenica i «kolektivna predstava»
koja se naglašava svojom objektivnom snagom i prinudom.
Takođe gore navedeni autor je tvrdio da vera u bogove i duhove ne može
biti uzeta kao opštost jer budizam ne poznaje boga.
Naime, on je tu napravio grešku jer budizam ne poznaje pojam boga
tvorca, a ne boga uopšte. Na ovom mestu nije odviše dodati da je budizam više
filozofija, nego religija jer spasenje ide preko čoveka, a ne preko boga.
Da se vratimo religiji, onome šta je, bolje rečeno, od čega se sastoji, koje
je njeno mesto u kulturi i društvu uopšte, kroz prizmu nekih autora i mogućih
definicija.
Dakle religija se temelji na podeli sveta koja je prisutna u svakom
društvu, na sveto (sakralno) i svetovno (profano), ili jednostavnije sveto i
nesveto.
Isto tako o tome šta je religija govori i slična definicija: «Religija je vera
u sveto i unutrašnji doživljaj svetosti, koji izviru iz ljudske egzistencijalne
situacije, praćeni osećanjima straha, ali divljenjem, molitvom, žrtvom, obredom,
ritualom i verskom organizacijom, a koji teže da ispune i oblikuju celokupni
život čoveka i društvene zajednice.»3
Upravo te njene neisušive mogućnosti kao da su sastavni deo korena reči
religija, koja potiče od latinskog glagola religare, što znači povezivati, a možda
kako ističe sv. Austin i od reeligere = ponovo izabrati, ponovo čitati.
Međutim, «religioznost jeste verovanje, ali svako verovanje nije
religijsko. Čovek može da veruje i u prirodne nužnosti, slučajnosti, sticaj
